A man has been arrested after 11 people were hurt in a series of "hit and run" car accidents in the Welsh capital, Cardiff.

The casualties, who included children, were taken to the city's University Hospital of Wales.

The accident and emergency department was only dealing with those injured in the crashes, and it was closed to other admissions.

There were reportedly around five different crashes in the Ely and Leckwith areas.

Police were at a number of locations including Crossways Road, Cowbridge Road West, Grand Avenue, and Sloper Road, and have advised motorists to avoid the areas.

The ages and conditions of those injured have not been confirmed.

Police said there were "a number of casualties" and witnesses said they saw "at least seven ambulances" in the Ely area.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and a van was seized.

BBC News - Cardiff hit-and-runs: One woman dead, 12 injured

A white van was stopped by police on the outskirts of the city

A 32-year-old woman has died and 12 other people, seven of them children, have been injured in a series of hit-and-runs in Cardiff.
The casualties are being treated at the city's University Hospital of Wales.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after South Wales Police stopped a van on the outskirts of the city.
Eyewitnesses have said pedestrians were deliberately targeted by someone driving a van in five locations.
The dead woman has been named locally as Karina Menzies.

Supt Julian Williams gave more details about the hit-and-runs at a news conference.
The arrested man was detained by officers near the Merrie Harrier pub at Llandough on the outskirts of Cardiff.
Police would not confirm at which point they began to pursue the suspect's vehicle, a white Iveco transit-type van.
The A&E department at the University Hospital of Wales was initially shut to anyone not involved in the incident but has since reopened.
However, people with non-emergency conditions have been asked to stay away.
Dr Grahame Shortland, medical director at the hospital, said those being treated mostly had fractures and head injuries.
    One person has been discharged.
'Girl screaming' The drama began when police received calls about an incident in Crossways Road in Ely at 15:30 BST.

Local residents say pedestrians were deliberately targeted

There were soon reports of hit-and-run collisions in several locations in the west of the city: Grand Avenue, Cowbridge Road West, Sloper Road and near Asda at Leckwith Retail Park.
Ely sub-postmaster Shady Taha, 29, had just served two girls and a young woman moments before one of the hit-and-runs in Grand Avenue, immediately outside a row of shops.
He said the two girls aged about 10 and a woman in her mid-20s had been browsing the birthday cards in the store before buying a jar of coffee and leaving.
He said: "All of a sudden I heard a bang. I looked out and across the road one girl was on the floor and the other girl was screaming.
"I heard a van speed off but I did not see it."
Mr Taha and his assistant phoned the emergency services and said it took a while for the ambulance to arrive. He added: "Now we know why."
Lynda Paterson, who lives on Cowbridge Road West, said the scene outside her house was chaotic.

"I was going to pick my children up from school and I could see there were police and someone was lying on the floor, on the pavement," she said.
"I could see police running back and forth along the road and I now know there was a child... who had been hit.
Forensic teams "The police were running down because the ambulance hadn't come."
Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan told BBC Wales that it sounded like a "tragic incident and my heart goes out to the victims".

There have been a series of hit-and-runs at incidents in west Cardiff
The Reverend Jan Gould has opened up the Church of the Resurrection on Grand Avenue to help offer comfort to the community.
Meanwhile, there was a high police presence at several locations in the west of the city, including Crossways Road, Cowbridge Road West, Grand Avenue and Sloper Road.
Ely Fire Station was sealed off with forensic teams working around there.
Supt Julian Williams, of South Wales Police, said: "This is a tragic incident that has affected a large number of people, and we thank the people of Cardiff for their help and support.
"Incidents like this are extremely rare here, as they are across south Wales, and we want to reassure the public that a significant number of officers are working on the investigation, including a number of specialist resources."
Leckwith Retail Park - which is next to the Cardiff City Stadium, home of Cardiff City FC - was closed, and ambulances and a helicopter were at the scene.

The A4160 Penarth Road in Llandough was also closed which caused delays in the area.
There were reports of traffic chaos in several locations and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Hailie Jacobs, from Ely, witnessed the aftermath in her area when taking her son home from school.

Part of Grand Avenue opposite Red House Crescent in the Ely area was closed
"I noticed all the police and ambulance first. They'd taped off the road in various parts," she said.
"Some of it was absolutely manic and there was a paramedic working on someone on the ground.
"There were just loads of ambulances and police cars and even two helicopters above.
"It was all quite scary, we live near there and it's all places where I walk my children."

It seems the chap has run amok using his van as a weapon. The thing is, if this had been America he probably would have used some machine gun or other and then in a final act of terminal defiance turned it on himself and gone out in a splatter of Taffy brain etc. I imagine ending it all by the use of a white van would be bit of a challenge and quite cumbersome hence his arrest unless of course one had a willing accomplice.

Certainly, mass murder in the US is a lot more efficient and generally obviates the need for a trial.

The police have an extra 36 hours to question him.
A bit odd as he was caught in the act. He's on CCTV, must be on Youtube by now.

According to Sky after running people down he got out of the van and attacked people using a Krooklok.

Someone has died and I hope he is charged with murder no crap about manslaughter. Or that he was in the grip of drugs and did not have the guilty mind.

    That's murder, not manslaughter.
He won't live to see the end of his jail time, unless he's kept in a secure unit at HM's pleasure.

Cardiff has a ethnically diverse population.

Cardiff is now home to over 11,000 Muslims from many different nationalities and backgrounds,[27] nearly 52 per cent of the Welsh Muslim population.

    Just saying like.

Cardiff has always been an ethnically diverse city, and by and large most groups get on well with each other. You don't hear of Muslim gangs or Muslims coercing young white girls, or big Muslim protests going on there as you do in a lot of other British cities.

There's only about 50,000 or so Muslims in Wales, most in Cardiff, a good thing, contained.

I think the last Muslim attempt at a demo there last year was a quiet affair, defused and toned down pretty quickly after some of the locals objected to their door to door advertising before the event, and the police allowed the demo if the ragheads turned their loud speakers down, which they did.

Also, the demo they had over the movie was defused by Muslims in Cardiff who called the police. A bit different from other parts of UK.

Whether or not the driver in this latest story is Muslim, we don't know yet, he could be any ethnic group, especially if mew-meow, baths salts, street names for mephedrone was a cause.

Don't know if Shirley Bassey is a Muzzie , but would definitely improve the quality of the locals lives if she wore a Hijab whilst making that awful bloody crowing noise out of her cake hole

Cardiff hit-and-runs: Matthew Tvrdon murder charge remand

Matthew Tvrdon, of no fixed address, faces a total of 19 charges.

A 31-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murder and attempted murder following a series of hit-and-runs in Cardiff.

Karina Menzies, 31, died after she was hit by a van on a fire station forecourt in Ely.

Matthew Tvrdon, of no fixed abode, faces a total of 19 charges.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address and was remanded in custody to appear before Newport Crown Court on Tuesday via a video link.

The series of crashes took place in the west of the city as children were walking home from school on Friday.

Karina Menzies was hit by a van in Ely, Cardiff, on Friday afternoon

Thirteen people were injured, of whom seven were aged under 12.

At lunchtime on Monday, the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff confirmed three adults and three children were still being treated following Friday's incidents.

The two adults who were previously described as critical but stable are now "improving", the hospital said.

Mr Tvrdon has also been charged with 13 counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one charge of dangerous driving.

South Wales Police said that the investigation was still "very much ongoing" and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
