Absurd but then that's often the case with the winners - giving it to Obama turned out to be a fucking disaster. And least said about Kissinger the better. This is what the committee said:

The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights. The stabilizing part played by the EU has helped to transform most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.
It's pretty obviously a political decision.

Now that the EU has been awarded this accolade, they'll probably start droning Pakistan.

Indeed so. Are they scared to just not award it during a year in which nobody stands out?

The award is for the person who has had the most impact on the world in that particular year - POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.

Seems to be that way. Surely they could have found some campaigner in Africa or Latin America or somewhere trying to settle conflicts rather than just toss it to a bunch of bureaucrats. An odd choice.
