The article praising Chris Patten during the 80/90's is wrong on many levels.

In 1989 he was the Secretary of State for the Environment and was responsible for the very unpopular Community Charge (Poll Tax).

He was also responsible as a cabinet minister for introducing the new and very unpopular Business Tax. His own constituents at Bath informed him of their concerns but he took no notice.

The pompous fool subsequently lost his seat at the election and from suddenly being a cabinet minister he wasn't even an elected MP.

The british public were extremely pleased to wave him goodbye when he was appointed in a dead end job as governor of Hong Kong until 1997. Lord Patten indeed!

Jimmy Savile: Number of victims reach 300, police say

Savile, who was knighted in 1996, was a household name in the 1970s and 80s

The number of possible sexual abuse victims of Jimmy Savile has risen to 300, Scotland Yard has confirmed.

It is thought the TV presenter and DJ, who died last year aged 84, may have abused scores of young girls and some boys over a 40-year period.

Police have so far spoken to 130 victims and officers have recorded 114 allegations.

Savile's great-niece Caroline Robinson has accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 12.

Met Police Commander Peter Spindler described the police inquiry as a "watershed" moment in the investigation of child abuse. He praised the media for exposing Savile "for what he was."

He said Savile was "undoubtedly" one of the most prolific sex offenders of recent history, and the weight of evidence from victims against the late DJ was overwhelming.

"We have to believe what they are saying because they are all saying the same thing independently," Cdr Spindler said.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has reiterated calls for an independent inquiry into the affair.

However, Andrew Lansley, the Leader of the Commons, wants the police investigation and independent reviews by the BBC and NHS to be allowed to run their course.

immy Savile investigation: Gary Glitter arrested on 'sexual offences'
Gary Glitter, the former pop star convicted of child sex offences, was arrested this morning by police investigating sexual allegations against Jimmy Savile.

The 68 year-old was held by detectives from Operation Yewtree, Scotland Yard’s inquiry into alleged child sexual exploitation by the late Jimmy Savile and others.
The former 70s pop star was arrested at 7.15am today in Stockwell, south west London on suspicion of “sexual offences” and taken to a station in the capital.
He was seen leaving his home dressed in a hat, dark coat, black gloves and scarf, accompanied by a detective, before being driven away. He made no comment.
Today’s dramatic arrest is the first by officers from the newly formed task force.
The Metropolitan Police declined to say what led to his arrest, which comes after claims Glitter raped a girl in Savile's dressing room in front of the television presenter.

The Yard has launched a criminal investigation into allegations that Savile was part of a sex ring, with other members who remain alive.
The Met police's investigation involves 400 separate lines of inquiry and more than about 300 alleged victims.
Earlier this month it was alleged that Glitter raped a girl of 13 in his dressing room at BBC’s television centre.
The attack, in the 1970s allegedly took place as Sir Jimmy was groping a 14-year-old in the same room at the corporation.
The allegations were made by Karin Ward, a former pupil of the Surrey school where Sir Jimmy is accused of preying on under-age girls.
She waived her anonymity to tell an ITV documentary screened last night how the Jim'll Fix It star was working with Glitter, a convicted paedophile.
Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, was said to have strongly denied the allegations. Born in Banbury, Oxon, he had a successful music career in the 1970s and 1980s before he was jailed in 2006 for child sex offences in Vietnam.
A Met Police spokesman said today: “Officers working on Operation Yewtree have today, 28 October, arrested a man in his 60s ['Yewtree 1'] in connection with the investigation.
“The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 0715 hrs on suspicion of sexual offences, and has been taken into custody at a London police station.
“The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Savile and others'.” He declined to comment further.
In 2009 Savile defended Glitter, who has been convicted of downloading child pornography in Britain and abusing children in Vietnam.
Savile said: "If you said to that copper, what's Gary Glitter done wrong? Well nothing really. He's just sat at home watching dodgy films."
The arrest comes after Savile's closest relatives spoke for the first time of their "turmoil" over the scandal and offered their sympathy to his victims.
Roger Foster, a nephew of the late DJ, spoke of the family's horror and initial disbelief over the allegations and hailed the courage of those alleged to have been abused, for speaking out.
When claims were made against Savile in a TV documentary earlier this month, Mr Foster said he was "disgusted and disappointed" by the motives of those making the allegations.
Last night he said the family had endured "a firestorm" of revelations and now offered their deepest sympathy to those who suffered at Savile's hands.
Allegations against Savile include sexual assaults of patients at Broadmoor, where he was initially an "honorary entertainments officer".
Brian McGinnis ran the mental health division of the Department of Health and Social Services in 1987, when plans were drawn up to appoint Savile to run a task force overseeing the hospital.
The Department of Health is holding an inquiry into how Savile came to be appointed to the task force and into the access he gained to patients in all three hospitals.

Jimmy Savile: Former pop star Gary Glitter arrested by police

The BBC's Tim Reid said police have confirmed they "have today arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation"

Former pop star Gary Glitter has been arrested on suspicion of sex offences by police investigating Jimmy Savile abuse claims.

He has been taken from his home into custody at a London police station.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed in Vietnam in 2006 for child sex offences.

Police are investigating allegations the late TV presenter Savile sexually abused some 300 young people over a 40-year period.

Met Police confirmed officers from Operation Yewtree had "arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation".

"The man, from London, was arrested at approximately 7:15 BST on suspicion of sexual offences. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Savile and others'."

Scotland Yard has said it is following about 400 lines of inquiry as part of the operation - which is looking into claims Savile, who died last year aged 84, abused hundreds of young girls and some boys.

Police described former BBC DJ Savile as a "predatory sex offender".

Karin Ward - a former pupil at Duncroft approved school for girls in Surrey - told the BBC she had once seen singer Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's dressing room at the BBC. Glitter has denied the allegations.

    'Reputation on the line'

The deputy leader of the Labour Party Harriet Harman has reiterated Labour's call for an overarching judge-led inquiry to look into the Savile abuse claims.

The late presenter is alleged to have carried out abuse at a number of institutions, such as the high security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary as well as the BBC.

Ms Harman told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that "we need to learn the overall lessons."

Earlier the chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten, has expressed his determination to deal with the Savile sexual abuse scandal.

Writing in the Mail On Sunday, he said the corporation must face up to the truth, warning the BBC "risks squandering public trust" and that its "reputation is on the line".

Ms Ward was interviewed for the BBC's Newsnight programme in November, but the interview was only shown on Panorama this week as the Newsnight investigation was shelved.

Mr Patten told the paper: "Like many who work for the BBC, I feel a sense of particular remorse that abused women spoke to Newsnight, presumably at great personal pain, yet did not have their stories told as they expected."

Ex-BBC director general Mark Thompson has said the first time he had been made aware of claims that Savile had committed serious crimes and that some had taken place while the entertainer was working at the BBC was after he stepped down as director general.

The Sunday Times reported the director general's office was alerted on at least two occasions that Savile had abused children.

The BBC has already announced inquiries into the Savile abuse claims. The first, led by former Sky News head Nick Pollard, is examining whether there were any failings in the BBC's management of the Newsnight investigation into Savile abuse claims.

On Monday, former Court of Appeal judge Dame Janet Smith will begin a review into the culture and practices of the corporation during Savile's time at the BBC. A further review will examine sexual harassment policies at the BBC.

Gary Glitter 'raped a girl in Jimmy Savile's dressing room'
Gary Glitter, the musician convicted of child sex offences, raped a girl in Sir Jimmy Savile's dressing room in front of the television presenter, it has been claimed

The BBC faced fresh claims over Sir Jimmy Savile after it was alleged that Gary Glitter raped a girl of 13 in his dressing room at the corporation's television centre.
The attack, in the 1970s allegedly took place as Sir Jimmy was groping a 14-year-old in the same room.
A third star – a household-name entertainer who still performs – was also abusing a schoolgirl, according to the claims.

Mrs Ward said her abuse happened when, aged 14, she and two fellow pupils of Duncroft boarding school for emotionally disturbed children in Surrey were invited to London by Sir Jimmy.
She told ITV News the three vulnerable girls were taken to Sir Jimmy's dressing room at BBC Television Centre.
She recalled: "I saw Gary Glitter have sex with a girl in Jimmy Savile's dressing room ... in that little alcove bit. I didn't see it completely but that's what was going on and nobody batted an eyelid.
"Jimmy Savile had a girl on his lap and he had his hand up her skirt.
"The girl Gary Glitter was having sex with also came from Duncroft. I think she might have been not quite 14."
She said the third star – a well-known entertainer – tried to grope her. "It frightened me and freaked me out," said Mrs Ward.
"He humiliated me in front of everyone in the dressing room by saying something really unkind about my lack of breasts."
The star was not named by ITV as he has denied the allegations.
Mrs Ward said she was considering going to the police.
Glitter, real name, Paul Gadd was said to have strongly denied the allegations.
In 2009 Savile defended Glitter, who has been convicted of downloading child pornography in Britain and abusing children in Vietnam.
Savile said: "If you said to that copper, what's Gary Glitter done wrong? Well nothing really. He's just sat at home watching dodgy films."
It was also reported that the late Douglas Muggeridge, the former Radio One controller in the 1970s, was aware of abuse allegations surrounding Sir Jimmy.
He is said to have asked a BBC press officer to find out if newspaper's were investigating the claims.
The head of Radio 1 was aware of sex abuse allegations against Sir Jimmy Savile in the early 1970s, according to a former colleague.
Rodney Collins, who was head of press for the BBC pop music station at the time, has disclosed that he looked into whether or not newspapers were investigating rumours about the DJ’s involvement with young girls.
He said he was asked to do so in 1973 by the late Douglas Muggeridge, then the Controller of Radio 1 and 2.
His claims put fresh pressure on the corporation, which has been accused of turning a blind eye to repeated claims of inappropriate behaviour by the eccentric presenter, who died last year aged 84.
In the past week 11 women have come forward to say that Savile forced himself on them when they were schoolgirls, some in BBC dressing rooms, with more details emerging in an ITV documentary on Wednesday night.
The BBC’s Newsnight pulled a similar programme last year, claiming it could not substantiate the allegations.
The BBC has said it is “horrified” by the claims and that its Investigations Unit is to work with police in looking for evidence, but insisted that “extensive searches” of old files have found no record of misconduct allegations against Savile.
But Mr Collins insisted: “For the BBC to say they weren’t aware of anything, they certainly were.”
He told how in 1973 Muggeridge asked to see him “especially” about Savile, who at the time was a presenter on Top of the Pops as well as a Radio 1 DJ.
“He said ‘look, I have heard things about Jimmy Savile but I need to know whether they’re going to end up in a newspaper. Can you check with some papers for me and let me know?’
“All he told me was that there were allegations about a programme called Savile’s Travels that went round the country for Radio 1. Jimmy in a caravan and they used to broadcast from various places and go up to you and say ‘what record would you like us to play?’
“There were allegations that there were girls – under age girls – involved, maybe in the caravan.”
Mr Collins said tabloid and London newspapers told him they were aware of the allegations, but that they wouldn’t run them because Savile was popular and did a lot of charity work.
A BBC spokesman said: “The comments made by the former press officer reflect a conversation that he says he had in 1973 about allegations that the controller of Radio 1 had heard but he does not refer to any formal complaint having been made.
"The BBC has conducted searches of the its files and has not found any record of allegations of misconduct by Jimmy Savile during his time at the BBC. We are now working with police forces to help them investigate these matters. We are also keeping our searches for information under review as and when new information comes to light.”
Lord Grade, a former controller of BBC ONE, has also admitted he heard rumours and “question marks” about Savile’s conduct, but insisted: “I never heard anything that gave me cause to think we should investigate or do anything about it.”
Meanwhile the growing number of claims about Savile are causing unease among public authorities across the country.
A £40 million project to turn the star’s former Scottish home into a respite centre for disabled children is in “limbo”, a charity trustee said.
There have even been calls for the Cabinet Office to posthumously strip Savile of his knighthood but sources suggested this would be unlikely as the honours cease to exist upon a person’s death.

Jimmy Savile: police investigating abuse by doctors
Police investigating sexual assaults by Jimmy Savile are examining reports three doctors abused young people at hospitals where the late entertainer volunteered, it has emerged.

    By Lucy Kinder10:28AM BST 25 Oct 2012
Detectives investigating Savile have been passed details of three doctors who are alleged to have abused young people in their care, it was reported.
The number of possible sexual abuse victims being investigated under Operation Yewtree is understood to be approaching 300, sources close to Scotland Yard told the BBC.
The doctors have not been identified but they worked at hospitals where Savile had links over several decades.
Their names have been passed to police who are investigating claims that the individuals were at the centre of a network of child abusers connected with Savile.
Jimmy Savile had an office in Broadmoor hospital, a bedroom in Stoke Mandeville hospital and was also given regular access to patients at Leeds general infirmary.

Police declined to comment on the reports this morning.
Stoke Mandeville was at the centre of another child abuse scandal in the 1980s when a consultant paediatrician was arrested for indecent assaults on children.
Dr Michael Salmon was jailed for three years after admitting indecent assaults on two 13-year-old girls and a 16-year-old girl. He was struck off the medical register in 1991.
This morning Jeremy Hunt said a Department of Health inquiry into Savile would cover "everything we need to do".
The Health Secretary told ITV1's Daybreak: "The big question that we need to answer is whether, because of his celebrity status, Jimmy Savile was given special treatment, in terms of access to hospitals, keys to hospitals, and things that ordinary people wouldn't have been given and shouldn't have been given.
"But I think our first priority is to co-operate with the police and help them get to the bottom of what has happened."
Former barrister Kate Lampard has been brought in to oversee the investigations into Savile at Stoke Mandeville, Broadmoor and Leeds General Infirmary.
It comes as police searched Jimmy Savile's cottage in the Scottish Highlands after fears he used the home to abuse victims. It is reported 20 allegations of abuse at the cottage are being investigated.
Savile hosted high profile guests at the isolated cottage in Glencoe including Prince Charles.
It has been untouched since Savile's death last year but police apparently believed that it could hold vital clues which may help the investigation.
The Northern Constabulary, who carried out the search of the cottage, said last night: "We are assisting with the logistics of a Met operation."

The police have so far been saying that there is no evidence that there was an organised pedo ring but i have a feeling that will change soon.

With the number of allegations and personalities involved, it doesn't look like anything other than a paedo ring. Why the police come out now saying that it doesn't look like one, before enquiries are over is a bit odd.
The allegations are implicating more personalities up the food chain, so maybe a few high flyers are getting twitchy and damage control is under way.
