Two female police officers killed in Tameside attack

Two police officers killed in Tameside attack as Dale Cregan arrested

Two female police officers have died during a "routine call-out" which led to the arrest of a man wanted by Greater Manchester Police.

Police said both unarmed officers suffered fatal injuries during the incident in Hattersley, Tameside.

A witness at the scene in Abbey Gardens reported hearing 13 gunshots and an explosion.

Dale Cregan, 29, has been arrested in connection with the officers' deaths and two previous murders.

He was arrested when he walked into Hyde police station a short time after the incident.

A bomb disposal team remain at the scene.

Dale Cregan, 29, has been arrested

The witness, a window cleaner who worked in the area, said the property the officers were called to had been unoccupied for some months.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said it was "a tragic day" for Greater Manchester Police.

"A long and dark shadow has been cast across Greater Manchester and my thoughts are with the officers' families, friends and colleagues.

"We will be doing everything we can to support them over the coming days and weeks."

The BBC's North of England reporter Danny Savage said he had spoken to an eyewitness who said they saw a police car outside shortly after 10:15 BST.

    'Bang, bang, bang'

"After that car had drawn up it seems that the two unarmed police officers inside the car went into the property which had stood empty for some months," he said.

"Whilst they were inside around a dozen shots were fired and there was an explosion."

He added: "There were gunshots fired, possibly a hand grenade as well - that appears to be the suggestions at the moment.

"Those police officers didn't come out of the house again, the police car was left outside with its lights flashing but empty. Emergency services and colleagues were soon here offering assistance."

Home Secretary Theresa May said: "This is a deeply shocking incident and a terrible reminder of the risks that police officers face every day to keep our communities safe."

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said it was "deeply distressing news [and] a painful demonstration of how police officers put themselves in harm's way every day to protect the public".

Witness Warren Sheppard was up a ladder cleaning the windows of a house nearby when the shooting happened.

He said: "I heard about 10 shots quite close, bang, bang, bang, like that. I knew they were gunshots because sometimes there is clay pigeon shooting in the fields.
"I heard a big explosion about 10 seconds after the shots. I got off the ladder, walked round, saw an empty police car.

"A car went speeding past to the main road."

The police flag at Greater Manchester Police headquarters has been lowered to half mast.

President of the Association of Chief Police Officers, Sir Hugh Orde, said the deaths of the two officers were "deeply sad news for the police service".

"Whenever police officers and staff lose a colleague that loss is felt right across the police family," he said.

"The thoughts of everyone in policing are with colleagues in Greater Manchester Police, family and friends of the two officers at this time."

ACC Shewan said Mr Cregan had also been arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder in relation to the investigations into the murders of David Short and Mark Short.

David Short was killed in a gun and grenade attack in Clayton on 10 August.

His son, Mark Short, was killed in a pub shooting at the Cotton Tree Pub in Droylsden in May.

Yeah I know mate , but ( and I don't mean KJ ) so many people jump on similar Thai stories and slate the place as if its the worst place on the planet. The point I am making is the fact its pretty much around the world.

We live not too far from Colchester , a tory run town for years , not a lot of hardship there , mostly occupied by comfortably well off folk . Today I look at the top 10 stories from the local paper ,, not exactly good reading.

    1. Cyclist found dying on side of the road.
    2. 2 charged after drive by shooting in Colchester.
    3.Unconcious man found in road
    4. Two men robbed at knife point in Colchester.
    5. Man beaten up outside town pub .

Not an ounce of evidence here linking the two police officers deaths and the guy who walked into the police station.

They were on a "call out" for what - trying to apprehend a known murderer or an unpaid council tax bill?

The Witness saw nothing but a "A car went speeding past to the main road." - Not an unusual occurrence on any main road.

    More on this story

Sir Peter describes their deaths as an act of "cold-blooded murder", saying the two officers were shot in the street after a hoax burglary call to an address in Mottram

Unable to embed the official police statement video. As above GMP state that the 2 officers were shot when they attended a reported burglary.

Mr Cregan walked into Hyde police station a short time after the incident in Tameside, shortly before 11:00 BST.

Seems totally classless if it is a body bag, hopefully it is not. The smile could be a grimace or whatever. What is for sure is that we often wonder why cops are heavy handed. As a cop friend told me last week you never know when a simple call can turn deadly.

As to all cops being armed, maybe but then most cop shootings and knifings are done by ambush or surprise. If this was a set up they probably never would have a chance to dray a weapon let alone use it. 2 brave young women killed for no reason. Hope the sod responsible enjoys the next 25 years rotting in Strangeways.

Dale Cregan: one-eyed murder suspect questioned over female PC killings
With his fake Onyx eye and reputation for violence, Dale Cregan has long cut an intimidating figure in Greater Manchester.
By Steven Swinford and Rosa Silverman10:22PM BST 18 Sep 2012
The 27-year-old reportedly told friends that he lost his eye after being hit with a knuckle duster during a fight with police in Thailand.
He became one of Britain’s most wanted men after being sought over in connection with the murders of a father and son killed in separate grenade and gun attacks.
Mark Short, 23, was killed in May and his father, David, was killed in August.
Police launched an unprecedented publicity drive, offering a £50,000reward for his arrest and making an appeal before a Manchester City football game.
His face was shown on concourse screens at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, while a van with pictures of him was also driven round the ground before the game.

Female officers who have died in the line of duty 18 Sep 2012
Police said the 'life-changing' reward for information about both men was still on offer simply for an anonymous phone call, without having to testify in court as a witness.
But despite his reputation, Cregan, has only a string of minor convictions, the most serious for affray after a road rage incident in Droylsden, Greater Manchester. Locals said that while Cregan was an intimidating character, he had “never been in any real trouble”.
In pictures released by police Cregan, who has worked as a roofer and previously lived in Tenerife, was shown with a fake onyx eye – although he is believed to have several normal looking eyes in different colours.
A neighbour said: "He said he lost his eye after he was punched by police in Thailand. One of them caught him with a knuckle duster."
Four men have been charged in connection with Mark Short’s murder and are due to enter pleas at Manchester Crown Court in November.
Earlier this month 33-year-old Anthony Wilkinson appeared at Manchester Crown Court charged with the gun and grenade murder of David Short.

My understanding is he was on Bail at the time of the murders for a similar (gun and grenade) murder charge.

I find it hard to believe the coppers would allow anyone accused of such a heinous crime against two of their own to walk on Bail.
In fact I doubt he's been before the beak yet.
He'll be in solitary somewhere with the coppers taking turns smacking him around.
If he IS on bail already you can bet there's a squad on his heels everywhere he goes.
But I'm calling BS. No way he has or will get bail for this.

No he is not out on bail since handing himself in.

He was also in Thailand for a month in June.

The police themselves do not want to be routinely armed, a poll of 47,000 of them in 2006 had 82% of them against being armed.

Sorry, but I can't find the link I saw. But it was a story of the magistrate defending his decision to grant bail, even though he was out on bail for two other murders, saying "it was quite normal" for bail to be granted. You know I don't post crap. He's out on bail.

Manchester police killings: Dale Cregan was on bail

Police believe PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes were deliberately "drawn" to the scene

A man suspected of killing two PCs in Greater Manchester was on bail over a fatal pub shooting, police have confirmed.

Nicola Hughes, 23, and Fiona Bone, 32, were killed in a gun and grenade attack after apparently being lured to Mottram by a hoax burglary report.

Dale Cregan is being held on suspicion of their murders and two others.

In June, Mr Cregan, 29, was questioned over the shooting of Mark Short in a Manchester pub and released on bail.

Detectives are continuing to question Mr Cregan, previously described as Manchester's most wanted man, over the deaths of PCs Hughes and Bone.

The police constables had been sent to investigate what appeared to be a routine burglary report in Abbey Gardens, Mottram, on Tuesday morning when they were attacked with a gun and grenade.

The silence was held by officers and staff in memory of their colleagues

Greater Manchester Police said it appeared they had been deliberately "drawn" to the scene.

A minute's silence for the officers was held earlier.

In a statement, Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said there had been insufficient evidence available to charge Mr Cregan over the pub shooting and he had to be released.

Mark Short, 23, was shot dead at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden, Greater Manchester, on 25 May. In June, Mr Cregan was arrested in connection with this death.

Sir Peter said: "It is absolutely normal in complex crime inquiries that when people are arrested there are occasions where there is insufficient evidence available for them to be charged.

    At the scene

At exactly 11am the message across Greater Manchester Police radios was "can all officers stand by and observe a minute's silence".

Inside the police HQ it was a chance to pause and reflect on the deaths of their colleagues PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone.

How many officers like them will be called out to routine jobs today?

There is though a sense here that yesterday's grief is now turning to determination.

GMP's Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said he wants to bring each and every person involved to justice.

There are many questions the force must now answer as it investigates the deaths of the two officers and David and Mark Short.

Questions like where has Dale Cregan been for the past eight weeks? Who, if anyone has been helping him avoid the several hundred police officers and support staff trying to find him?

There must be support too for the officers who have been trying to find Mr Cregan. They are said to be shattered at how this manhunt ended.

The police authority here says it will do all it can to help them as officers try to understand what happened in a community they try to protect.

"In those circumstances suspects have to be released on bail as there are strict time limits covering how long suspects can be held in custody without charge.

"That is exactly what happened in this case."

Mr Cregan was arrested when he walked into Hyde police station a short time after the shooting in Mottram on Tuesday.

Sir Peter said he believed he had been "protected by a criminal conspiracy to harbour him".

Two people from the Abbey Gardens house, a man and a woman, continue to be questioned.

My mistake. I appear to have misread a badly written story in which the magistrate was stating it was normal to let a double murderer out the first time, so he could double murder again. Apologies.
