Violence erupts in Sydney over anti-Islam film

Violence has erupted in central Sydney as hundreds of Muslims protest against a controversial film about the Prophet Mohammed.

It is the latest in a series of demonstrations that have killed at least six people in the Middle East. Protestors have also marched through London.

The wave of protests spread to Sydney's CBD this afternoon, beginning outside the United States Consulate and spreading through the city's streets to Hyde Park.

The ABC understands the protest was sparked by a mass text message saying: "We must defend the honour of our prophet, we must act now."

Don't think it was anything to do with bikinis. There was a bad vibe on cronulla beach for a while with gangs of middle easterners behaving in a hostile manner towards locals and this resulted in a major backlash one weekend which made worldwide news.

There were a few high profile gang rapes in Sydney about 10 years ago with gangs of middle eastern boys raping aussie girls and saying in their defence that it was culturally acceptable given the girls skimpy 'provocative' clothing.

Australian Islamic leaders have condemned yesterday's violent protest in Sydney which left six police officers injured.

Six people have been charged and eight men were arrested during the demonstration involving at least 200 people who were protesting against an anti-Islamic film that that ridicules Prophet Mohammed.

Glass bottles were thrown at police who were forced to use capsicum spray, tear gas and the dog squad to keep the crowd at bay.

Islamic Friendship Association of Australia founder Keysar Trad condemned the Sydney violence, describing the marchers as a noisy minority, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Muslim community member and volunteer Tony Vlahos described the protests as an embarrassment.

"Ultimately, just because something's vile, it doesn't give people the right to protest violently against it and call for people to be beheaded," he said.

"I would love to see a counter protest at Melbourne's US consulate condemning the violent rioting in Sydney as against the principles of Islam and contrary to the example of the prophet Muhammad."

The protest began when an "an unannounced and unapproved" group of about 100 people gathered at Town Hall in Sydney's CBD at lunchtime yesterday, before walking along George Street towards Martin Place.

Conflict between police and the group then broke out, as they attempted to enter the US consulate within the MLC Centre.

A growing group of protesters then moved to Hyde Park where around 300 people gathered, waving banners that had slogans such as "Behead all those who insult the Prophet" and "Our dead are in paradise, your dead are in hell".

Nine News helicopter footage captured a handful of people in a crowd of hundreds throwing objects at riot police.

Some demonstrators were seen standing between the police and more agitated protesters in an effort to calm the crowd.

Speakers at the demonstration also appealed for calm, asking protesters to pray.

The protest came to an end at around 5pm (AEST) after demonstrators stormed out of Hyde Park and dispersed onto William Street.

Extra police have been put on duty in the CBD today in case of further protests, Nine News reports.

I might believe that if tomorrow there are spontaneous peaceful rallies by muslims where they denounce violence, support freedom of speech and the right of non muslims to voice their opinion on whether there is one god called allah and if indeed mohammed was his prophet without fear of violent retribution from muslims or muslim states. This of course will also require muslim states to remove all religious laws from their books.

Here's a simple test. Go ask any practicing muslim you know if he believes that there is but one god called allah and mohammed is his prophet and the koran is the literal word of god. If he say's no, ask him to prove it by saying it down at the local mosque.

#1.It was a load of Aussie born shitheads who still identified themselves as Lebanese. The 'Bra' boys turned up to help sort them out and took eskies and a BBQ along...At least we have our priorities right when rioting in Oz.

#2 There is little ethnic disharmony in Japan. That's because they have a monoculture. Bloody good idea, even if the concept does upset the PC crowd.

#3. In Oz, no one begrudges the arrival of legitimate refugees. But we expect that if someone comes to Australia with the intention of making it their home, they either integrate and become proper Aussies...or the populace 'prefers' them to piss off back to the shithole they originally left.
