DEVELOPING: Multiple people were shot Friday near the Empire State Building in Manhattan, the New York City Police Department confirmed to FoxNews.com.


Authorities said at least five victims were shot and that the gunman was killed. It was not clear if the gunman shot himself or was shot by someone else.
A law enforcement source told Fox News that it is unknown whether the shooting was "a case of a robbery or an act of terror."
A fire department spokesman said it received a call about the shooting just after at 9 a.m. Friday and that emergency units were on the scene within minutes.
The spokesman had no information about the victims' conditions.
The FBI confirmed to FoxNews.com that they were on the scene investigating. The shooting occurred at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.
A witness told Fox affiliate WNYW that the gunman opened fire "indiscriminately."

Mayor of NY says that some of the injured may have been shot accidentally by police


Law enforcement officials said a shop worker sacked near the iconic tower shot dead a former colleague.

The incident took place shortly after 09:00 (13:00 GMT).

Some of those hit by bullets may have been accidentally hit by police, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a news conference.

But he said their injuries were not life-threatening and they were expected to make a full recovery.



Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the suspect had been fired about a year ago from his job designing women's accessories at a business near the skyscraper.

He said the "disgruntled" worker had been armed with a .45 calibre pistol, and he fatally shot a former colleague in the head.

The shooter was identified as 53-year-old Jeffrey Johnson. His 41-year-old victim was not named.

Commissioner Kelly said that a construction worker followed the gunman, and alerted two police officers outside the Empire State Building. There was a confrontation and the officers shot the attacker dead.

There was a heavy police presence earlier at the scene on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue, and the FBI also attended.

I got the impression that the "shooter" only fired at the victim and the other injured were "collateral damage" when the Police opened fire. I may be wrong but that's the impression I got from the BBC report.

Go outside, check your neighborhood for bodies, make sure no terrorists hiding behind a nearby tree waiting to jihad your ass, check area for Norwegians, if you see a whale, save him, go to your local mini mart to check if BiB are extorting money, and check for crowds with like color shirts.

The Norwegian victims were all confirmed socialists. Thats why Anders was judged to be sane and only sentenced to 21 years. (just over 3 months per victim)

In America you would get a life sentence for each victim (or death in some states) even if your victims were liberals or left wing activists. Norway clearly has a much more developed judiciary than the US.

Funnily enough the UK changed their gun laws after Dunblane.

Before that we had the Hungerford massacre in '87. All automatic weapons had to be turned in after that one and nobody really put up any opposition.

you can change gun laws all you want, but with so many guns around, anybody who wants one can get one quite easily.

its illegal to carry knives in the uk, but look at how many get stabbed.

this is about a persons psychological make up, about their dissatisfaction with life, with the society they live in, with their sense of entitlement to everything, with their jealousies and greeds and general paranoia and total frustration with their lot and inability and or laziness to do much about it

america just seems to have a greater share of psychologically imbalanced people than most other countries. thailand is up their too, and the uk is fast catching up.
