Iran lawmakers prepare to close Hormuz Strait

Iranian lawmakers have drafted a bill that would close the Strait of Hormuz for oil tankers heading to countries supporting current economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

"There is a bill prepared in the National Security and Foreign Policy committee of Parliament that stresses the blocking of oil tanker traffic carrying oil to countries that have sanctioned Iran," Iranian MP Ibrahim Agha-Mohammadi told reporters.

"This bill has been developed as an answer to the European Union's oil sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Agha-Mohammadi said that 100 of Tehran's 290 members of parliament had signed the bill as of Sunday.

Iran's threats to block the waterway through which about 17 million barrels a day sailed in 2011 have grown in the past year as US and European sanctions aimed at starving Tehran of funds for its nuclear programme have tightened.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital shipping route through which most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq and nearly all the gas exported from Qatar sails.

An EU ban on Iranian oil imports came into effect on Sunday.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

Fcuk the world. We don't need them. Boost domestic consumption.

Maybe GM and Chrysler can sell them some cars.

This bill was suggested back in December of last year and, as shown, has yet to gain full, or even 50%, support.

They are of cause perfectly entitled to stop the passage of any countries ships, through their waters, whose policies are harming or threatening them, financially, militarily etc.

I am sure they will await the arrival of the Russian submarine fleet/missile defence systems and the Chinese aircraft carrier prior to executing the threat.

Absolutely, but can the free world afford it unless we take the cheap route and drop a neutron bomb on them before they get their nuke ?
I feel so sorry for the many Iranian folk that despise the wackinthehead Ahmienidajead', whatever his name is and they cannot even protest in Tehran.

The Straits of Hormuz are international waters.
For one country to try and close them at best is a breach of The Law of the Sea. At worst, it's piracy.

.... and the US is required to protect and defend an international asset, and to respond to acts of war.

Iran had better not even try to attempt that - it would be the excuse the US and Israel need to bomb their coastal military installations into oblivion.

    I hope it happens.

I'm sure you could get a third of the current congress in the US to vote for various types of completely absurd legislation. probably true of many/most countries. politicians vote for nonsense because it helps shore up their political base...all the while they know full well that the adults will take over and it will never become policy. the point being, even though a third of MPs claim to support it, it's a long way from becoming actual policy.

The "I hope it happens." transforms your post from a comment to war mongering.

calling war mongers "fucking twats" is being kind, giving that you are egging people to go and slaughter each other deranged and mentally ill would be better terms

I would welcome such a stupid move by Iran, as it would precipitate a military (specifically Naval) engagement with the USA, something Iran is bound to lose.

Furthermore, this would be a welcome opportunity for Israel to use Iran's distraction in the now unnamed Gulf of Persia, to fly the appropriate sortees to demolish the various nuclear targets.

I consider whatever casualties such a conflict will bring about to be a minimal price to pay, compared to the destruction a nuclear Iran can and will cause.

Sounds fair enough to me. Although the prospect of an under-fire Iran lobbing missiles at us is not appealing, so they better do a proper fucking job this time.

Ah who am I kidding. The Iranians will huff and puff but they don't have the balls to do anything other then send the odd skiff full of kids on a suicide mission.
