London flats set to host missiles for Olympics

Residents of a London apartment block have been told that surface-to-air missiles were likely to be installed on the building to help combat airborne terror threats to the Olympic Games.

Giant Olympic Rings on a barge float next to the Thames Barrier on the river Thames in London. Residents of a London apartment block have been told that surface-to-air missiles were likely to be installed on the building to help combat airborne terror threats to the Olympic Games.

"A high-velocity missile system may be situated on the roof" and 10 soldiers stationed in the building for two months for the Games, which start on July 27, according to a leaflet distributed to residents.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed on Saturday it was scouting locations as Britain prepares to mount its biggest peacetime security operation for the Olympics.

"Ground-based air defence systems could be deployed as part of a multi-layered air security plan for the Olympics, including fast jets and helicopters," a spokesman for the ministry said in a statement.

"Based on military advice, we have identified a number of sites and... are talking to local authorities and relevant landowners to help minimise the impact of any temporary deployments," he said.

The ministry has made no final decision on deployment of missiles, but is evaluating sites alongside police, the statement added.

Brian Whelan, a journalist and resident of the apartment block in Bow, east London, told AFP: "They're going to do a dummy run and if it goes well, there will be high-velocity missiles stationed on my building, along with soldiers.

"It seems like it's completely written in stone -- there's been no consultation. They announced it in a way that makes it seem like some kind of prize that I've won, to be living on an army base, which is insulting."

The building was chosen because of its "excellent view of the surrounding area and the entire sky above the Olympic Park", the leaflet said.

It assured residents that the missiles would only be used in the event of "specific orders from the highest levels of government in response to a confirmed and extreme security threat".

"Having a 24/7 armed forces and police presence will improve your local security and will not make you a target for terrorists," it said.

A security force of more than 40,000, backed by a huge intelligence operation, will guard venues, athletes and the millions of visitors expected to throng the British capital for the Games.

"Lone wolf" terrorist attacks are a major concern for security forces but a range of other threats are also being considered.

In 2005, a day after London was named host city, four homegrown suicide bombers attacked three underground trains and a bus, killing 52 people.

How many missiles on each flat? Worst case scenario, air sea and land attacks? Who's going to pay the rent for those missile sites and the room and board for the missile operators? Oh, you say the general public! O.K. send them to my flats as I can think of some really creative pricing. Next up, rooming houses for the soldiers and sailors. Forget the tourists and the Olympics, this could be more financially prosperous than they ever thought.

Great opportunity to get pissed with the squaddies.
If they are Black Watch make sure they pay for the ale as they will be on overseas allowance.

Judge to rule on Olympic rooftop missile battery
    Tuesday, July 10, 2012

A general view shows the Fred Wigg Tower in Leytonstone, east London, Tuesday, July 10, 2012.

A judgement is due to be handed down Tuesday after residents of the London apartment tower went to court Monday in a bid to stop their rooftop from being used as a missile base during the upcoming Olympic Games, saying the deployment in a densely-populated area could make the building a terrorist target.

The British military plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles at six sites around London as part of a vast security operation for the July 27-Aug. 12, 2012 London Olympic Games, but residents of the 17-storey tower block say they were not consulted about the plans

LONDON (AP) — A British judge will rule Tuesday on a bid by residents to stop their London tower block being used as a missile base during the Olympic Games.

Judge Charles Haddon-Cave had been due to give his judgment in the morning, but postponed the announcement until after lunch.

Residents of the 17-story Fred Wigg tower, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from Olympic Park, say the missile battery could make their homes a terrorist target. They are seeking permission to bring a full court challenge to the deployment.

The British military says surface-to-air missiles also will be stationed at another apartment building, at a reservoir and farmland in east London, and along hillsides in south London as part of a vast security operation for the July 27-Aug. 12 games.

That eyesore should be the target of a missile battery, not the home of one.

I'm sure if they just top up their benefits a bit they'll withdraw their case.

Anybody that believes this bollocks is mad ! There will be no missiles on the flats in the same way there will be no snipers in helicopters ready to take out rogue pilots who stray into the no fly zone or warships cruising up and down the Thames. it is all just complete and utter bollocks to keep the phoney war on terror going and to ramp up the threat levels. Can anyone honestly tell me a Government that wont allow the police to chase motorcycle thieves that are not wearing crash helmets in case they fall off and hurt themselves or will not allow firemen to wade into a 3 foot deep duck pond to rescue a drowning man, who subsequently drowned, because they were not trained in water rescue is seriously going to shoot down a plane full of bombs and or fuel over the most populated city in the country ?
Give your head a fucking shake people !
Do you honestly think that if they had the slightest intelligence that these measures were needed they would allow the games to go ahead ?
Believe me if they had the slightest inkling they needed any of the measures mentioned they would have cancelled the games
    THEY HAVEN'T
As said this is all just to ramp up the threat levels and keep the sheep scared. Scared people are more easy to control and they can take away your rights and freedoms more easily and all in the name of keeping you safe.
And you fall for it every single time !

    Good post Big Fella.
I don't believe they're capable of rescuing a cat from a tree without a thorough risk-assessment from H&S, a parliamentary review, a million pound purchase of emergency equipment, consultation with their allies, pretentious indignation when one of those allies says, "just climb the tree and get the fucking cat," evacuation of 20 city blocks in each direction of the tree, and an exhaustive public awareness campaign to BAN cats from climbing trees, ever again.

    Drama queens.

London residents lose bid to stop Olympic missiles
    Rachael Brown
    July 11, 2012

Residents of Fred Wigg Tower have lost their bid to prevent missiles being placed on the site.

    (AFP: Andrew Cowie)

A group of east London tenants have lost their High Court battle to prevent missiles being stationed on their roof during the Olympic Games.
The 17-storey Fred Wigg Tower block is one of six locations selected for missiles to be stationed during the Games.

It was chosen for its close proximity to London's Olympic park in the event of a 9/11-style aerial attack.

But the Leytonstone residents argued putting surface-to-air missiles on the roof of their tower block would make them a target.

Their lawyer told the High Court the block could become the focus of terrorists wanting to make an "evil statement".

Justice Haddon Cave agreed with the Ministry of Defence that it is the only suitable site.

The judge said residents were under "something of a misapprehension" in regards to the equipment and risks.

"It is clearly necessary to protect the Olympic park from potential terrorist attack both from the air and the ground," Justice Cave said.

"The first duty of government is to defend the realm and to protect national security, including by protecting the public from terrorist attack."

Britain's Ministry of Defence (MOD) welcomed the decision, saying the missiles were "an essential part of the multi-layered air security plan".

"We have always said we are planning for the worst-case scenario, not the most likely scenario," a MoD spokesman said.

"We acknowledge that the deployment, albeit temporarily for the Games, of military equipment and personnel can be unsettling, particularly where the community may not be used to a military presence.

"We will continue to engage with local communities to provide reassurance and reduce any impact on residents as far as possible."

The residents' solicitor Martin Howe told reporters outside the court that he was "very disappointed" with the decision and would have to explain to his clients "that by this Friday, missiles will be on their roof".

A decision will then be made on whether to appeal against the ruling, Mr Howe said.

We aren't talking about council workers and PC Plod here, numbnuts.

A terrorist attack on the Olympics in London is probably every Al Qaida suicide bomber's wet dream, and I'm sure they are dealing with a massive amount of threat intelligence, none of which you will probably ever hear about, and a lot of which they'll find out to be bogus.

Do you have such a short memory that you don't you remember 7/7?
