Fury over attack on British war graves in Benghazi

Attacks on the graves of British servicemen in Benghazi, Libya, have been described as "appalling" by Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne.
The Foreign Office said 200 graves and a Cross of Remembrance were damaged at the Benghazi British Military Cemetery.

The Benghazi War Cemetery was also targeted. Both cemeteries commemorate British and Commonwealth nationals who died during or after World War II.
The Libyan authorities apologised and pledged to catch those responsible.
The damage was "unethical, irresponsible and criminal", the ruling National Transitional Council said.
'Extremely apologetic' Liberal Democrat minister Mr Browne condemned the attacks but said he did not believe that only British or Christian graves had been targeted.
    Commonwealth War Graves Commission
"My grandfather's generation were truly heroic in that part of Africa in the Second World War and I think people will be shocked by what they see," he told the Sky News Murnaghan programme.
"It is worth saying the Libyan authorities themselves are shocked too.
"They have been extremely apologetic and made a very strong commitment they will get to the bottom of this. They will try and do everything they can to resolve it."
He added: "I would not want people to think this is somehow an ingratitude by the government of Libya. That's not the case."

Video footage made by the attackers showed about a dozen armed men kicking down headstones and trying to damage a cross.
The BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse, in Tripoli, said the attackers referred to "Christian dogs" and a Jewish memorial was also targeted.
Our correspondent said the attack was "calm, almost casual".
One theory is that it could have been retaliation for the burning of the Koran by US soldiers at a military base in Afghanistan last month.
But our correspondent said no link was suggested in the video, and added: "We don't really know who these young men are, why they are vandalising grave stones and what their motivation was."
He said there were lots of armed groups, militias, who operated largely outside of government control in Libya and there was very little the government could do about them.

Yes, you're right. I can't understand why they didn't stick to using napalm. Very effective at getting rid of evidence.

Bring back Gadaffi. As a soldier he wouldn't have allowed this.

What horrible, bestial people they are at heart. Savages.

In Thailand, the only piece of well-kept turf is at the Kanchanaburi Commonwealth cemetery.

And all those circles that were calling for a utopia after Gadaffi's demise.

BBC World never screened this as far as I know, Aljazeera did. The OP is from the BBC website.

Very selective in what it broadcasts these days. Basically has become unwatchable

Well those British war graves were the graves of armed invaders, not a bunch of humanitarians. They had as much business being in Libya with guns and bombs as I do in my neighbors bedroom with a ski mask and knife.

Don't be such a fucking moron. The Italians had invaded Libya. The allies kicked the wops out and the UN re-established independence for Libya in 1949, and it was enacted by 1952.

So you can go and rape your neighbour now, you poorly educated slubberdegullion.

It would be nice if the NTC offered to pay for this. Or perhaps the new Cyrenaica Council.

(CNN) -- Two World War II-era cemeteries that were vandalized over the weekend by armed men in Benghazi will be restored, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission said in a posting on its website.
Hundreds of gravestones marking the bodies of Christian and Jewish soldiers were kicked from their locations, many of them broken, in the Benghazi War Cemetery and the Benghazi British Military Cemetery, the CWGC said. "Both cemeteries will be restored to a standard befitting the sacrifice of those commemorated at Benghazi, but this could take some time because we will need to source replacement stones," the organization said.
"We will also need to be sure that it's safe for the detailed work to be carried out, but in the meantime we will ensure that temporary markers are erected over the graves. We have no reports of any maintenance staff being injured in the attack."
Britain urged Libya's new leadership Sunday to investigate the desecration of the more than 200 Commonwealth war graves that were vandalized, acts filmed and posted on YouTube.
Libya's National Transitional Council said Sunday it regrets what happened, calling it "unethical, irresponsible and criminal," and promised to prosecute those responsible.
"We strongly reject these acts that are rejected by the Islamic faith," the NTC said in a statement. "Such practices do not represent at all the local public opinion and they contradict the Islamic principles that emphasize and urge the respect of religions and beliefs."
In the YouTube video, a group of men is seen walking around the graves, kicking down headstones and using sledgehammers to chip away at a cross at the front of the cemetery.
A voice off camera says, "Destroy the cross, these filthy dogs." Other voices mock inscriptions on the gravestones, including one engraved with the Star of David.
The description of the video says it is a response to the recent burnings of Qurans by U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but CNN cannot independently confirm that.
Benghazi was the birthplace of last year's Libyan revolution. The 1,500 graves in the cemeteries hold the bodies of servicemen who died during and after World War II.
There was no evidence of damage to the graves themselves, only the headstones, the British Foreign Office said.

Libya is descending into the next Somalia.
Considering the nature of a lot of the people in these countries a strongman is what's needed to keep the lid on.

africa should be left alone and allowed to sink into the pit of filth, violence, disease and corruption that has always been its pathetic destiny.

it and its people are beyond hope, always have been.

humanity started there, but even the neanderthals couldnt wait to get out of the place.

    let nature run its course.

The British appointed puppet King Idris as Emir of Cyrenaica, the helped him consolidate power in the lands we now call Libya, they also helped him negotiate with the United Nations. That is why he gave the British rights to steal Libyan oil and put military bases in Libya.
