Zimbabwe : Chinese face deportation for eating tortoises

Chinese face Zimbabwe deportation for eating tortoises
    18/02/2012

Four Chinese men face deportation from Zimbabwe after they were arrested for killing more than 40 tortoises for meat, a state daily reported Saturday, citing a statement by an animal rights group.

A Kenya Wildlife Service warden shows one of 228 live leopard tortoises intercepted in 2006 in Nairobi as they were transported from Uganda en route to Thailand. Four Chinese men face deportation from Zimbabwe after they were arrested for killing more than 40 tortoises for meat, a state daily reported Saturday, citing a statement by an animal rights group.

The Herald newspaper said Zhang Hong Yuan, Chen Caijan, Lin Guibin and Shi Jiahua were arrested in a village in Bikita in southeastern Zimbabwe on Thursday, following a raid by the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ZNSPCA), the police and parks and wildlife authorities.

"When we raided the Chinese homestead, we also recovered 13 live tortoises, meat together with skeletal remains of a further 40 tortoises," the newspaper quoted SZSPCA chairman Ed Lance as saying.

"Officers were dispatched to Bikita in order to undertake investigations into the matter and charges of cruelty were laid against the four. The four men are now detained pending deportation."

The animals were kept in steel drums without water or food, the Herald said.

The tortoise is listed as an endangered species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Villagers who gave statements to the police said the tortoises were dropped alive in boiling water to separate the shell and the flesh.

    I don't think they're human.
I spat the dummy once at a dinner where the fish were alive swimming around in the pot which was put over the fire with the intention of heating the water slowly until the fish died.
No empathy for other creatures or nature.
It's as though they have no relationship with this earth.

So they eat endangered species. Nothing new there.

Doesn't mean they aren't human, or locusts.

They need to be educated, that's all.

Is the issue that they are endangered or that they are cute?

Tortoises I mean, the Chinese are definitely not endangered. Or cute.

The issue is it's illegal to eat them (regardless of why) but they do anyway,
    Also
The animals were kept in steel drums without water or food,
They are fucking horrible people generally.
    (there are of course exceptions)

    Good tip.

I had to replace the blades on my blender after trying to make a tortoise, melon and banana smoothie with one I caught in the garden.

I realise I'm on dodgy ground here, but, the idea of treating an animal well and then eating it stinks to high heaven.

Either accept you're at the top of the food chain and enjoy your grub, or sit down to take a piss and eat vegetables.

I would imagine a giant tortoise to a chinky would be considered "a buffet".

strange that the chinese would show the world
how 'caring' they are about a panda bear
shipping it off to various parts of the world
and yet we have seen many times the utter brutality
    they have regarding other animals
the propapanda is an image to show the world 'it cares'.
    won't get fooled again.

Europeans liked tortoise meat. Darwins ship the Beagle had 30 on board, all eaten by the crew. Delicious i'm told.

The Chinese have some rather fine traditions of cannibalism as well.

LOL like the Afros don't eat anything they can get their hands on. The black bush meat market flourishes in babwe.

I think that was during the rather ironically-titled "Great Leap Forwards".

Not just them. All the Europeans who put in on the Gallapagos Islands for water and meat did that. That's why there's just lonely George left over.

They used to cut the tortoise out of its shell alive.

Oh well, we've learnt since then, haven't we?

As well as before and since. China's population exploded after the introduction of potatoes, corn and other grain, and has dealt with serious famine problems from floods, drought and blights ever since. Having a moral compass that is more like a sundial lets you get away things during a famine that you can't if you are, say, Irish. There is also a tradition of eating enemies (ritual cannibalism) that precedes but resurfaced with a vengeance during the Cultural Revolution, aka "eat the rich," literally.

The Chinese have no problem treating other human beings as beasts of burden, so it isn't much of a stretch to start eating them, too. If Swift had written his famous proposal for the Chinese they probably would have thought it a grand idea.

By the way, I'm sure the Chinese would love being compared to black Africans, as 9999 does above.

In regard to eating turtles, it's one thing to eat common edible species such as snapping turtles and softshells, and quite another to dine on threatened species, which the Chinese go out of their way to do. They could get all the snapper soup they could possibly want from my neck of the woods in the US (it's damned good, too!)

    PARAPHASE:

If it has four legs but is not a chair, if it flies but is not an aircraft, if it swims but is not a submarine. The Chinese will eat it.

Forget who that is attributable to.
