CRIMINAL and standover man Mark "Chopper" Read has been banned from firing the starter's pistol at his son's little athletics group.
Read - who boasts of killing 19 people and once attempted to kidnap a County Court judge at gunpoint - had applied for a Working With Children Check in September so he could become a volunteer at the Collingwood Little Athletics club.
It is understood the bid was blocked by the Department of Justice because of his extensive criminal record, which has led to him spending a total of 23 years behind bars for a range of violent crimes.
Child protection campaigners welcomed the decision yesterday, hoping it would not be appealed at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Despite his background, Read said he believed it was insulting he was considered a risk to children.
"I should have been given the chance, who would it have hurt?" he said.
Read's eight-year-old son Roy had been attending the little athletics in Collingwood for a year when Read claims he was asked to volunteer his services firing the starter's pistol.
In hospital battling a serious illness, Read has ruled out an appeal at VCAT and has instead removed his son from little athletics, claiming the competition was rigged.
Little Athletics Victoria general manager Dean Paulin said the organisation would have allowed Read to volunteer had the government approved his safety check.
"We basically said to the centre that he needed to go through the appropriate check process, if he passes we have no issue," he said.
"Unfortunately he hasn't [passed]."
A Department of Justice spokeswoman said she could not comment on individual cases, but that all applications were assessed in line with the stringent procedures.
Australian Childhood Foundation chief Joe Tucci said the banning of Read showed the system was working.

If this guy really have killed 19 people?? It stands to reason that most must have been covert cowardly ambushes and not out in the open face to face! Or he would have been locked up for life a long time ago, add the fact that he "alledgedly" boasts about it and you have got a psychopath coward maniac piece of human garbage, he should have been put in an insinerator with the rest of the garbage a long time ago, and there is no way no matter how you try to spin it that he in anyway can be a good influence around children.

So good job by the department of justice even if it is way to little and late.

Read was born to an ex-army father and a mother who was a devout Seventh-day Adventist. He was placed in a children's home for the first five years of his life. He grew up in the Melbourne suburbs of Collingwood, Thomastown, Fitzroy and Preston. He was bullied at school, claiming that by the age of 15, he had been on the "losing end of several hundred fights", and that his father, usually on his mother's recommendation, beat him often as a child. Read was made a ward of the state by the age of 14 and was placed in several mental institutions as a teenager, where, he later claimed, he was subjected to electroshock therapy.

When he was still young, Read was already an accomplished street fighter and the leader of the Surrey Road gang. He began his criminal career by robbing drug dealers, based in massage parlours in the Prahran area. He later graduated to kidnapping and torturing members of the criminal underworld, often using a blowtorch or bolt cutters to remove the toes of his victims as an incentive for them to produce enough money so that Read would leave them alive.[1]
Read spent only 13 months outside prison between the ages of 20 and 38, having been convicted of crimes including armed robbery, firearm offences, assault and kidnapping. While in Pentridge prison's H division in the late 1970s, Read launched a prison war. His gang, dubbed "The Overcoat Gang" because they wore long coats all year round to conceal their weapons, were involved in several hundred acts of violence against a larger opposing gang during this period. Around this time, Read had a fellow inmate cut both of his (Read's) ears off in order to be able to leave H division temporarily. While in his early biographies Read claimed this was to avoid an ambush by other inmates, by being transferred to the mental health wing, his later works state that he did so to "win a bet". Read was ambushed and stabbed by members of his own gang in a sneak attack, when they felt his plan to cripple every other inmate in the entire division and win the gang war in one fell swoop was going too far. Another theory is that James "Jimmy" Loughnan and Patrick "Blue" Barnes wished to benefit from a contract put on Read's head by the Painters' and Dockers' Union. Read lost several feet of intestine in the attack. Ironically, Jimmy Loughnan and Ned Clonan were longtime friends of Read's. Read was, at the time, serving a 16 and a half-year sentence after attacking a judge in an effort to get Loughnan released from prison.[citation needed]
Described variously as witty, charismatic, sadistic and frightening,[by whom?] Read has claimed to be involved in the killing of 19 people and the attempted murder of 11 others. However, many of his associates in the underworld[who?] say he is prone to making up numbers to increase his own notoriety and the sales of his books, and Read himself has stated several times he would "never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn".[citation needed] In a 2007 interview, Read admitted to being involved in the deaths of four people, all of which were on the grounds of self-defense, he said.[citation needed]
Read has also spoken of his old mid 1980s to early 1990s rivalry with Alphonse Gangitano in the TV series Tough Nuts. Read explained he had a disagreement with Alphonse with regards to an old age neighborhood hero who Gangitano admired. It is alleged that Gangitano burst open the toilet cubicle door with a number of associates and began a serious assault on Read who made his escape but not before spreading his faeces into Gangitano's face.[2]

He used to rob drug dealers etc and maintains that the only people that he ever hurt were criminals.I wouldn't call him a coward though....

Uncle Chop Chop never raped woman or kids, nor did he bash innocent people or assault the general public or old people.

What he is guilty off is killing drug dealing scum that spread death through out Australia and he also offed a few underworld crime figures.

All in all had his priorities right, a modern day Robin Hood one could say and a professor in humor.

Read his books, there funny as fok and one will piss themselves laughing but at the same time be impressed by his writing skills.

But then again if your a miserable fuk you wont.

Just ordered one of his books for my Kindle, proving there's no such thing as bad advertising.

I read a few of his books, I think at least half of it is fiction. As to him being a modern day robin hood? Another way of looking at it is he targets criminals because he knows they won't go to the police afterwards.
