    1. Has anyone on TD ever been there?
    2. Do most of the British in the UK consider the Falklands a sovereign state of the UK?
    3. Its thousands of miles from the UK and obviously closer to Argentina.
    4. I know oil and gas, but that's a recent discovery?
    5. Logistics of a war in that region is going to really stretch the UK's military resources?
    6. The general UK public does not support wars, so why would they support this one?
    7. Being pounded to death by missiles and bombs on a rock pile can't be all that much fun. What's the upside to this?
    8. The financial drain on the Uk economy will be terrific. Is this a jobs program?
    9. Finally, will Canada support Argentina?
    10. Forgot, what are you thinking? This shit is crazy!

The Type 45 destroyer carries 45 surface to air missiles, and the accompanying subs can send Tomahawk missiles to hit Buenos Aires from the Falklands.
The destroyer is accompanied by a patrol boat and another support vessel.

The air base, RAF Mount Pleasant has strike craft, and a number of helicopters. About 2,000 men are stationed there.

This thread is laughable. You arrogant clowns could not stick your nose down there today without getting it chopped off. Your capabilities there have been severely degraded. The last hope of a failed empire...

We do when we get attacked, we just don't support pointless wars built on lies that have nothing to do with us.

    I have.

Not in any sort of military capacity though, and this was back around ~17 years ago. It was a boring windswept dump with all sorts of areas off-limits because of fears of land mines. If the land mines have been cleaned up I imagine it is still a boring windswept dump.

Still, it has penguins, so there is that.

No, the British, or the English at least, generally support those too. The country's not quite as obviously flag-wavingly militaristic as America but it's very nearly as stupid. Or perhaps even more so.

Because Brits DO support the rights of people to chose for themselves and will fight for that.

On the whole, they couldn't give a toss about 'the rights of people to choose'. They just enjoy their martial tradition and, probably more importantly, they like beating up ragheads, Pakis and dagos.

Obama should order the invasion of some obscure Caribbean island, just for the sake of 80s military nostalgia solidarity.

We can do that at home mate. No need to travel thousand of miles for that.

Look, I know for an American the concept of "the people choose" is difficult, what with your long history of 'we will choose who should/should not be in power and send in the army to see that it occurs" - but try really hard and you may just get the general idea.

Save you getting involved in a fuck of a lot of minor wars if you did.

Considering you come from a superpower that's had its collective arse raped by a load of bankers and spooks, and thousands of lives lost trying to beat an enemy with nothing better than home made bombs and the odd AK47, I think that's a rather stupid thing to say.

    But not atypical of you.

The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

Argentina had their chance to argue their case at The Hague' in the 1960's. The UK agreed to go to court, Argentina refused to attend or acknowledge the courts findings.
Around 1969/70 i went to the Falklands when in the RN, it is a desolate place.
The islanders were determined to remain British. It was seen as a useful strategic territory and i think, well used by many survey ships. I did not think at the time it would be fought over, i am pretty sure discussions had taken place with Argentina over mineral rights etc by then.
I was in the RN reserve by the time the conflict started, i was disgusted by the leaders of both sides desire to flex their political muscles but i believed then and now the UK forces were/are more than capable to re-take the islands. I lost many shipmates there (hence my objection to BF's apparent desire to see a ship sink) and i sincerely hope this does not escalate into another conflict.

That's all fine and well but last time I sat bored in Immigration playing with my passport I noticed it said "Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern...."

Interesting. I had a higher regard for you as an American than I do for you as a fellow Brit.

Why is it that Americans think that their country is the only one with hi-tech kit?

Some of the stuff they have and have had .....

    I.E.

Mustang "the greatest fighter of WW2". Shit. Until "you know who" put a Merlin in it and gave it somewhere to take off from.

M1 Abramms. With hi-tech Armour that came from where???? (of course we have to add that it doesn't hold the record for the "longest tank-to-tank kill". I wonder where that tank came from?)

F86 Sabre. A piece of sh1t until someone gave it the movable tail plane.

There is more but.....it is getting late.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all

    Enough said.
There was, I believe, numerous other countries involved in these actions. Which means the British cannot claim these as their own victories.

SAMs from France, thank you France, Cruise missiles from US, thank you US.

The subs also have torpedoes. During the last engagement, the Belgrano, the sub captain chose to use the MK18 torpedoes from the 50's as they were more reliable than the newer Tigerfish.

In the last conflict the French supplied Super Etandard to the RAF to enable them to train in fights against them and also supplied detailed plans of the Exocet in order that the UK forces could tamper with their systems, the French also assisted in locating any Exocets on the open arms market and helped outbid the Argentinians. Without the help of the French it is unlikely that the British would have destroyed half of the Argentinians entire strike air force.
