Israeli Drone - the size of a B737 - crashes

Israeli jumbo drone crashes in field
    AFP
By Said Khatib | AFP 11 hours ago

One of the most sophisticated drones in the Israeli military crashed by accident in a field on Sunday, without causing casualties, an army spokeswoman said.

"An Eytan (meaning "strong" in Hebrew) crashed by accident into a field today in Israel during a test being carried out jointly by the army and Israel Aerospace Industries. There were no injuries," the spokeswoman told AFP.

Israel's private Channel 10 television said a wing broke off, apparently because of a heavy payload, causing a loss estimated at 10 million dollars.

The huge drone, of which the army only has a few in service, is the size of a Boeing 737, can fly 36 hours non-stop -- bringing Israel's arch-foe Iran within range -- and carry a payload at an altitude of 13,000 metres (40,000 feet).

More likely a Bunker Buster. But they obviously fucked up the design if a wing fell off.

    EITAN

Heron navigates using an internal GPS receiver, and either a pre-programmed flight profile (in which case the system is fully autonomous from takeoff to landing), manual override from a ground control station, or a combination of both. It can autonomously return to base and land in case of lost communication with the ground station. The system has fully automatic launch and recovery (ALR) and all-weather capabilities.
Heron can carry an array of sensors, including infra-red and visible-light surveillance, intelligence systems (COMINT and ELINT) and various radar systems, totaling up to 250 kg (550 lb). Heron is also capable of target acquisition and artillery adjustment.
The payload sensors communicate with the ground control station in real-time, using either direct line of sight data link, or via an airborne/satellite relay. Like the navigation system, the payload can also be used in either a fully pre-programmed autonomous mode, or manual real-time remote operation, or a combination of both.

^^They have another 3 such craft I think.

^Payload was too much, only designed for lightweight gear.

    More unreliable than manned craft.

One would have thought they'd know the maximum payload?

36 hours for an 800 mile flight? Yes, I\'d say that is within range.

    Hyperbole perhaps?!

Moved from the Iranian thread, thanks Harry

"JERUSALEM — A long-range Israeli drone capable of surveillance and bombing missions over Iran crashed Sunday near an Israeli air base during a test flight.

The Heron TP unmanned aircraft can stay aloft for 40 hours and has a range of 4,600 miles, the Israeli air force said. The distance between Iran and Israel is about 1,000 miles.

Gen. Ido Nehushtan, commander of the Israeli air force, said new technology on the drone was being tested when the aircraft crashed into an orchard near the Tel Nof air base outside Rehovot.

A preliminary investigation indicated that human error and a technical malfunction contributed to the accident, the air force said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

According to military sources, a wing that fell off the drone had been fitted with a highly advanced navigational device that might have interfered with the aircraft’s other flight systems."

No word of Iranian missile strike or electronic interference, yet. No images broadcast by Press TV yet.

The Israelis thought it was near the Tel Nof air base outside Rehovot, but because of it's highly advanced navigational device it transpires that it may have been actually off Kuwait, heading towards Tehran.

The Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle Heron TP, also known as the IAI Eitan, has crashed during a test flight near the Tel Nof airbase, south of Tel Aviv.
Israeli radio reported that the Heron TP exploded after the crash. Nobody on the ground has been injured.
The Israeli Air Force says technical failure or human factor could have caused the incident.
The IAI Eitan was passed into service in February 2010.
The all-weather fully-automatic UAV was designed for strategic reconnaissance and carries a whole payload of sensors, optical and infrared cameras and is equipped for fire-control, also reportedly having assault capabilities. Thought to be the biggest UAV in the world, it is capable of reaching Iran.
