Sea Shepherd : Protester boards Japanese whaling vessel

    Protester boards Japanese whaling vessel
    Kerri Ritchie

Pete Bethune was also aboard the Ady Gil (pictured) which was damaged after colliding with the Japanese vessel Shonan Maru 2 in January.
    (Sea Shepherd: Glenn Lockitch)

An anti-whaling protester is being detained on a Japanese whaling ship in the Southern Ocean after climbing aboard the vessel to carry out a citizen's arrest on its captain.

Sea Shepherd protester Pete Bethune, who was injured last month when his vessel, the Ady Gill, collided with the Shonan Maru 2, clambered aboard the ship this morning before sunrise.

Sea Shepherd Australia director Jeff Hansen says Mr Bethune planned to attempt a citizen's arrest and also deliver a $3 million bill for the loss of the Ady Gil.

"Pete Bethune is OK... we believe he's OK and has been taken into custody," Mr Hansen said.

"We've made a statement where we don't want captain Peter Bethune to come back onto our vessel.

"We want the surrender of the captain of the Shonan Maru 2 and to take himself to the nearest Australian or New Zealand port and to turn himself in to the legal authorities."

The New Zealand-based spokesman for the whalers, Glenn Inwood, says Mr Bethune has committed an illegal act of piracy.

"It doesn't matter what his flight of fantasy was, whether he thinks he was there to make an arrest, whether he thinks he was there to deliver a bill, it's illegal," Mr Inwood said.

He says Mr Bethune cut his hand while boarding the ship and has been treated by a doctor.

Mr Inwood says Mr Bethune is being kept in a room on his own and Japanese authorities are discussing their next step.

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown says he supports Mr Bethune's actions.

"[I respect] his courage, his devotion to the whales and his simple fearlessness in going abroad the very ship that just a couple of weeks ago rammed his own ship and sank it, at risk to the lives of all six of his crew members," Senator Brown said.

Now he should be transfered to a ship headed for Japan and face a court there for piracy, get a life sentence in prison and put in the loony bin with the rest of the nuts in japan and when he dies, his carcase should be released to relatives if he has any that want to claim his remains, If not then he should be fed to the sharks.

could well be the real reason behind his cut hand.

These japanese bastards need to face courts for their contempt on international regulations, and the numerous infractions they commit. That goes as far as endangering lives by sinking a ship, aiming sound devices towards a flying helicopter, etc etc...

And now a kidnapping. Australian navy and courts are just way below par on this story.

    You are pobly right Thet,
Maybe say he came aboard, stole a small boat anchor and chain and tried to get away with it and jumped over the side.

Just like those idiots in Boston a few centuries ago who stood up and protested an injustice (taxation without representation). Started a war with Britain eventually! Pure idiocy to show courage for a righteous cause, be so much easier to just let the Japanese rape the oceans without comment.

They are breaking no international laws.
They are killing no endangered species, so what is wrong with what they are doing?
If you personally do not like what they are doing then do not buy Japanese made products,, Start a Boycott of Japanese made goods and services. that should show em what you think.
First thing to do is sell that Honda Cicic and the Suzuki that your wife drives,, sell the TV set and the kitchen electronics and make your property free of all Jap made junk, then get your friends involved.

They ran that silly looking boat directly in front of the ship and were blinding the helmsman with a green lazer lite, which should be again the laws of the international rules of the Road,, purposeful blinding a helmsman with a light beam directed into the wheel house of another vessel.

This guy reminds me of the nutter who swam to Suu Kyi's house. Likely delusional and a detriment to his cause.

At the same time, the lengths the Japanese have and continue to go and the money they spend to prop up an industry that is of minuscule significance to the economy in terms of jobs and of virtually no consequence to the food supply, not to mention that it does nothing good for Japan's international reputation, should clue people in to the what this "issue" is really all about, which is Japanese domestic politics.

The Japs are hurting nothing killing a few whales, they are not endangered in any way and it in no way is detrimental to the survivability of any whale species, and they want to do it and there are those who do not want them to, so is an ongoing thing.
If people would ignore them then they could ease off on it and soon forget about it, but to be forced to stop doing something that they are doing that is legal would be a loss of face I would imagine, so even if they are losing money on it I can see why they continue.
The idiots that run the Sea Shepard scheme are salting away great amounts of money and are on top of the news by putting the idiots that follow them into harms way and if anyone is killed it will not mean shit to Watson or what the fuk ever the head idiots names are,, they get famous and make a ton of money and idiots take all the chances..
I guess it beats working for a fucking living.

Should whaling be opened up to the Chinese, Russians, Koreans, Taiwanese, Malaysians, Filipinos, and anybody else who feels like killing them, too? Or are the Japanese and Norwegians special somehow? Which, by the way, is a core feature of the Japanese pro-whaling argument- their whaling "tradition" makes them special. Fine, let them hunt whales close to their shores with hand-thrown harpoons and lances from wind- and man-powered boats.

I think that only Japs and Norskys are not signatory to the IWC, so they are breaking no laws.

But here is something that might interest you..Now lets see what happens.

Well why stop it there with wind powered ships.. if you want to take it back, lets go all the way back to where whales still had 4 legs and ran around on land,, why fuck around with any modern shit.

    Method:
    Step 1

Peel and boil potatoes, carrots, sweede/parsnips. When boiled, mash with butter and milk into creamy mix

I still think the French took the right approach with the Rainbow Warrior -- albeit I also do believe that Whalers should be sunk, not negotiated with.

That makes about as much sense as banning the taking of any living thing in the ocean. What's so special about whales as opposed to any other ocean life.

1000 is not a few, second part of your statement is debatable as well as irrelevant. Fact is there is no reason to hunt them in the first place--they are a poor source of food and expensive to catch to boot.

Yep. The Inuit have free rein on whaling; far as I know, the Japs do it under the guise of "research". This dumbo boarded the ship on the high seas, no? Piracy. Shoot him.

You know nothing, and whales and sea lions eat a very valuable quanity of food fish that would be more abundant for humans if those were open to more harvest. and it cost you nothing to hunt them.

Correct on all points, except I do not think that Inuit or any Eskimo or Alieute has an open ticket to hunt them, but does get somekind of special permit,, I remember once that the Indiand down on the sound had a permit to hunt them the old way and Greenpeace fucked that up.
Should open season on Greenpeace and the Sea Shepard and their bunch of looneys and ships.
