So he's a pissed old fart. Is that in some way unusual for a convict?

His academic achievements were complemented by setting a new world speed record for beer drinking: he downed 2 1/2 pints - equivalent to a yard of ale - from a sconce pot in eleven seconds as part of a college penalty.[14][15]

In his memoirs, Hawke suggested that this single feat may have contributed to his political success more than any other, by endearing him to a voting population with a strong beer culture.[13]

Good on Bob, he still knows how to interact with the man in the street.

Video's creator says Bob Hawke a 'legend'
    Sat Jan 7 2012

Glenn Brandon with Bob Hawke's wife Blanche d'Alpuget at the Sydney test.

The man who shouted Bob Hawke a beer at the Sydney cricket test has described the former prime minister as a "legend".

Glenn Brandon, from Berry in NSW, took the opportunity to have a drink with the 82-year-old as he walked past with wife Blanche d'Alpuget on the second day of the test on January 4.

As the crowd "went wild" Hawke downed the cup of Carlton Midstrength in a single gulp.

"I'm 28 so he was a bit before my time," Mr Brandon told ninemsn. "But he's just a bit of a legend.

"You wouldn't give Paul Keating or John Howard a beer if they walked past but you'd definitely give one to Bob Hawke."

Mr Brandon said he was surprised the Labor Party elder was able to skol a beer so efficiently at 82 years old.

"(But) he has had a lot of practice," he said.

Mr Brandon's video of the feat has gone viral on the internet and featured on the television news around Australia and on UK news websites.

After only a couple of days the video had been watched by around 250,000 people on YouTube.

Mr Brandon said Hawke was unlike any politician of the modern era.

"He's a great Aussie bloke. That's why he got that reception from the crowd even before he drunk the beer, just while he was walking through," he said.

"(NSW Premier) Barry O'Farrell and little Johnny (Howard) were just waving from the grandstand. Hawke's not afraid to get down there and get dirty with the people.

"I think it just proved he's got that same sort of attitude and is a likeable bloke."

If he looked close enough it was probably running down his leg as fast as it went in.

    He IS a legend.
    Incredible to think he's 82.
Incredible to think I'm the age I am now, where does the time go once you've used it?
I mean, you can see it coming, but where does it go after?
In the states a politician gets caught cheating on his wife he's out.
Bob gets caught, he goes on TV cries a bit, says how he's really sorry, and all the sheilas go weak at the knees and all blokes go 'onya Bob and life goes on.
Australia where Politicians are real men and Julia, a wanna be man.
But to be fair, the party was never voted in with Julia as leader If memory serves me correct.

Most Aussies relate to Bob Hawke, unlike those who we have in at the moment.
Politics unfortunately does not attract many who have this ability as those who have it can make much more in private industry.
At 82 he still has a twinkle in his eye who can mix it with the best but feel at ease with the common man. Privately he would be shaking his head at Gillards persona.

I should have been a politician in Australia. I am a common Man, drink beer; especially when it is free. Even weak beer is ok when free. Would I have to live in Australia fro any length of time. Never fancied the outback all then nasty snakes and stuff.

Remember seeing him on TV years ago when Australia won the Americas cup.
Pissed as a fart, saying "Any boss who sacks a worker for not turning up today is a bum"
