Going to Laos for your Thai Visa Run
If you are going to
Vientiane for a visa run from Thailand then you will need to head for
Nong Khai, from
Bangkok you can either fly from
Suvarnabhumi airport to Vientiane, it takes just over an hour and
ThaiAir has 2 flights per day, or you can get the train from
Hua Lamphong to
Nong Khai, or the bus from Morchit to
Nong Khai and then either get a taxi to Friendship Bridge, or catch the bus from Nong Khai to Vientiane, this obviously crosses Friendship Bridge.

If you are just visiting Laos for a holiday it has 3 international airports Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse with many choices of airlines available. You can also now fly from
Udon Thani to Luang Prabang with Lao Airlines.

At the present time the Thai consulate in Suvannakhet Province which is across the border from
Mukdahan is being extremely strict on issuing visas into Thailand and most Visa run companies have stopped using that border crossing, you can find more information of other border crossings in to Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia

Most nationalities will need a visa to enter Laos, these can be applied for on arrival at most of the border points into Laos or can be applied for before your visit to Laos from the
Laos embassy in Bangkok.

The Laos visa prices vary from Nationality to Nationality, but if you are paying for your visa at the border point it is generally cheaper to pay in US$, so it is worth checking the prices listed and the exchange rate, at the border crossing between Nong Khai and Vientiane there is a currency exchange very close to where you apply for your visa, for British Nationals a 30 day tourist visa into Lao costs 35 US dollars.
In Vientiane you can use Thai Baht, US Dollars or Kip to purchase and pay for goods and services, although you do have to know beforehand what currency your change will come back in, also with dollars these do need to be in perfect condition, ie no tares and not dirty, with smaller businesses you will find it difficult for them to have change or give change for large denomination notes, we have had trouble before getting change of 800baht from a thousand baht note so keep this in mind.
Vientiane has many guesthouses and hotels which are all relatively cheap, with places like the
Sihom Guest House charging from 200baht per night or the
Phetmanyxay Hotel from 300baht per night, also Vientiane has many bars and
restaurants, from Indian to fine French cuisine, beer is quite cheap in Vientiane and you will find some restaurants and bars where it is cheaper to drink beer rather than coffee.
If you are traveling from Laos to Thailand and have a visa for Thailand you can go by bus to either Nong Khai or Khon Kaen, to Nong Khai it costs 55baht and Khon Kaen 180baht, this is the cheapest way to get back into Thailand, more about the bus time schedules can be found

From Pattaya you can catch the bus to Nong Khai, this costs 581baht and takes 12 hours, you can then get a tuktuk to Friendship Bridge and travel onto Vientiane.

Here. The Lao government recognizes three types of border checkpoint in Laos .
An
international checkpoint can be used by Lao citizens and citizens of all other countries.
A
local checkpoint can be used only by the citizens of two neighbouring countries.
A
customary checkpoint is used by people living in the neighbouring provinces of two countries.
Laos has more than 100 customary checkpoints. As more people start to use these checkpoints, they will be developed into local and then international checkpoints, this is dependent on expectations of at least 100 foreigners crossing perday.
