Wangderm Palace a Place to See

Wangderm Palace also called the Phra Raja Wang Derm, was the official residence of His Majesty King Taskin the Great. The palace was constructed when the capital of Siam (Thailand), was moved from Ayutthaya to Thonburi. This followed after the former capital Ayutthaya was taken back from the Burmese armies in 1767, following their invasion of the capital.

During the reign of King Rama I, the King moved the capital from Thonburi to Pranakorn, during this time a trusted relative was appointed to dwell in the Phra Raja Wang Derm (Wangdem Palace). During this reign, the King reduced the palace area by excluding two temples from the palace grounds. The place was offered as Naval School by King Rama V in 1900.

The Throne Hallmis built from bricks and contains a pavilion. Towards the south lies the Pratinang Kwang, or Transverse Building. Two Chinese residencies are also here. The larger being a Sino Thai building. The roof is of a Chinese architecture. The smaller building is also of a Chinese architecture, yet the doors and windows have been adapted to suite the Thai climate.

The Adobe of His Majesty King Pinklao has been constructed in a Western style a foremost design of its kind during the period of construction. Towards the north resides the shrine of King Taskin the Great, the shrine is a mix of architectural style of Thailand and the West.
