Tom Yum Kung Recipe - Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup

Tom Yum Kung ต้มยำกุ้ง is a hot and sour zesty soup and is most likely Thailands most famous dish, it is generally made with shrimp/prawns but other seafood can be added to it or it can be made with chicken, ie Tom Yum Talay is the Thai seafood dish.

There are many variations of this dish so don't be suprised to find different recipe listings of ingredients both online and in books.

Tom Yum Ingredients

* 5 cups of water
* 1 cup of shrimps/prawns peeled and deveined
* 2-3 slices of galanga
* 4 kaffir lime leaves
* 2-3 cloves of garlic crushed
* 1 Thai lemongrass chopped and bruised
* chilli peppers sliced to taste or can use ground dried peppers
* 1 cup of mushrooms sliced (in Thailand straw mushrooms are used)
* 2 tomatoes sliced
* juice from 2 limes
* 1-2 tablespoons of fish sauce
* small bunch of Chinese parsley

Making your Tom Yum Kung

* Bring water to boil in large pan, add galanga, garlic and fish sauce, leave to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
* Add the prawns, mushrooms and tomatoes.
* As soon as the prawns are nearly cooked add kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass, lime juice and chilli, do a taste test and if ok add the Chinese parsley and serve.
