Thai Centipedes inspire great fear in Thai's, if you spoke to most Thai's after being bitten by a centipede you might think your only hope is a quick and relatively painless death, luckily this fear is greatly exaggerated, yes it does hurt and is extremely painful, but unless you have an allergic reaction you will survive, with the larger Thai centipedes growing up to lengths of 20cm they can be quite fearsome looking beasts, especially if they are on YOU.

Scolopendra Subspinipes or Giant Thai Centipede or Chinese Red Headed Centipede likes warm dark damp places, they like to burrow into soil, at night they go searching for prey, they eat small insects, spiders, earthworms, and other arthropods. They capture the prey with their legs and then inject venom into them.

These centipedes can live for 10 years and suprisingly people in Europe and America keep them as exotic pets.

Scolopendra Subspinipes have twenty one body segments with 2 legs on each segment.

If you do get bitten by a Thai centipede it is probably best to clean the wound, applying heat to the wound is supposed to alleviate some of the pain, and seek medical care.

In 5 recorded cases of centipede bites, 3 to the same man, the pain can last from several hours to 2 days and symptoms included swelling, numbness, tingling, burning, weakness in the affected area, also dizziness, near syncope, and nausea, the degrees of symptoms and pain should come down to how much venom the centipede can get into you.

Centipedes do occasionally hit the local news and even the international news on the odd occassion, in this article a Thai man in Pattaya is bitten by a centipede and survives, in Malaysia a man has had a dangerous weapons charge brought against him for putting 4 centipedes into somebodies bed.
