    Myanmar through a lens

Just some pics of Myanmar; if you haven't made a trip here yet come on over before the hordes of backpackers come on over. I'll add more as I travel around
Yangon: Was but a fleeting visit and I was busy with work. Went to the main Pagoda in town.

The whole city is more green than BKK, hope it remains so
Mandalay Region: It's a big old area with plenty to see and do

    More later, ordering pizza.

Pizza on the way so a few more pics. Shan State- I'll be going back for more hiking- spent three days up in the mountain, meeting two opposing armies among other things. Wanted pics of them but the had AK47s, which tend to make the deciding point.

    Beautiful.

Would you think of getting an off-road bike? Even a Honda CRF250 would be great fun for exploring.

Thinking about renting one for the December break, in October I'll be going to Ngapapli beach.

I guess I can deal with this place:

^ Very interesting and great pics. Green when I have the power. I am hoping to get to the far north of Kachin State in March. One unexpected benefit of this teaching gig is one of my students is the son of the current mayor who has offered to help securing the necessary permits

Kachin state is open ( I have been to Myitkyina) no permits necessary traveling to there, BUT you can not travel further north by land but can fly into Putao but need stay at tour approved places and to venture outside town u need be on a tour.

Went hiking around Myandi a month or so ago- amazing place and very few hikers around so we had the place to ourselves for most of the day. Was taken by the school so transport was provided-without your own wheels it would not be easy to get there.

Thanks for the greens and nice comments! I'm on holiday from Friday so have booked the bus to Inle Lake where the plan is to hike to the Shan State capital of Taungyyi. After that it'll be back to the lake to get the bus to Bagan for its pagodas before catching a river ferry back to Mandalay. Should be some good photo opportunities

Hit a bit of a snag getting to Taungyyi from Inle- the local militia control the areas one can go and hike, so it looks like the last hour must be covered by car. I am looking into a 1 night cruise back to Mandalay from Bagan, although I suspect it will cost quite a bit. One thing about Myanmar is that it can cost quite a bit to get around and stay in hotels. Was originally headed to Ngapali but it's all booked up already.

?? i have found it quite cheap to travel around Burma by bus, boat and or trains.
Hotels everywhere I have been average $12-30 for a double with a low of $3 (Kalewa) and a high of $75 (Mogok)

Night cruise from Bagan to Mandalay??? never knew there was one and why would anyone travel on a river at night??

Interesting stuff Prego. I've got ngapali beach on the radar, I would really love to see it before it gets developed, been to Myanmar before but only Yangon, which I enjoyed, I'm thinking December if I can get the time of work, Myanmar embassy is close to my gaff in Lao so easy for my visa, wife doesn't need one. We had a shitfight with the Thai bloke at don muang flying air Asia to Yangon when we tried to board, asshole insisted that my wife needed a visa to enter Myanmar, she didn't. Thais do. ! but Lao nationals don't, this fucker wouldn't back of and even when I pulled it up on the iPad and showed him the reality of it, he still wouldn't admit he didn't know his ass from his elbow, I can do without that kinda shit when I'm travelling, anyway I got the last laugh and the pimply little somchai lost a bit of face and had to admit he was Wrong. Looking forward to a return there.

@preg - looking forward to your pix when you've got the time to post them. Happy safe travels!

@bld - Thais do not need a visa to Myanmar if entering by air. They need one if via land - I suspect this is Myanmar's way of giving Th the finger. Heh.. most SEA nationals don't need visas to Myanmar. Your wife didn't need one, same as me. It's good I knew abt my rights, bcos a visa tout at the Mae Sot border insisted that I buy a visa frm him. I said I didn't need one, and it was good that the immi officer knew abt his ASEAN stuff too. Hope you get to travel to Myanmar this xmas time. I'll look forward to your travel tales. And moob pix for patsy & me! Lol.

One of the biggest issues with Ngapali is simply the act of getting there! I live in Mandalay and it is a 24 hour plus overland journey of overpriced flight away. Will probably end up taking the flight- it's not like there is much to spend my salary here
