Myanmar Visa Advice - October 2014

I just tried to do an online visa to Myanmar (Burma) for a trip 2 weeks from now. But their website, at present, allows you to obtain this visa only if you are flying into Yangon (see: Myanmar eVisa (Official Government Website).

If, like me, you want to fly to Mandalay, it seems you must use a travel agent or go to the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok and apply in person.

So, as I don't want to spend time in Bangkok, does anyone know of any travel agents in Chiang Mai who do the Myanmar visa? And the price? I suspect the price will be extortionate, as it seems is everything related to Burma, but I'll have to live with that in exchange for the joy of motorcycling around Mandalay.

Nope. But wish I could. Actually, I would be happy if I could get a rhythm out of spoons or a tune out of a tin whistle.

Thanks for information Richard, and I enjoyed your post on your trip - and great photos.
Yes, I did hire a bike from from Zach in Mandalay - an old Honda XR125. It had seen better days, but was mostly ok. A bit pricy compared to Thailand, but the only show in town. And he's a committed rider himself, not just someone pocketing the profits, so good for advice as well as a bike. I think it worked out about $27 a day.
I followed some of the same roads as you up toward Lashio, although went to Kalaw and Taunggyi rather than Bagan. I'll post up a trip report here soon - I'm still in Mandalay writing this on a rainy night, and the internet connection isn't able to deal with a post using photos or I would do it now.
As to the visa, I eventually found a Travel Agent in Thapae Road that got it for me in 3 days for 2,700 THB. Then flew in to Mandalay direct from Chiang Mai with Bangkok Airways, so no free bus into town. Rather, a $5 shared minibus ride - I'll remember to include other such practical details in my trip report for anyone contemplating a similar trip.

i like air asia gives you the bus you for free!!! BUt good info regarding a shared minibus

why did u pay 2,700 for ur visa when u could have done it online for $60?

I am heading back in March and head up north to Myitkyina with stops along the way. Zach said a few others have made that trip. and arranging a trip to Mogok ( legally this time)

I only rented the small semi auto 125 fr $10/day an dit was great, I hate shifting all the time,
Had to replace the front brakes cost me a whole $3!!!!.

Have a great trip an look forward to the report.

Myanmar evisa web site is saying access through other airports is now available.
    Caveat emptor.

FWIW, the evisa process was straightforward for us. Three working days and USD 50.00 each.
