Very nice pictures! thanks for sharing!
Brings back memories. My last trip to Burma was around 2006.
I've heard it got crazy expensive since, especially hotels, after the country opened up a bit?

The hotels are more expensive than Thailand. The SLORC Commanders are busily ferreting their money out of Myanmar into Thailand & China ... leaving little money for Infrastructure Improvement. The Chinese are grabbing as much raw materials & petroleum as they can. Myanmar has enormous natural resources ... but no Burmese Govt for the past 200 years has been able to make it work successfully. Myanmar should be at least at the level of Thailand ... but continues to be an empire dominated by a small clique of elite rulers.

i really dont think the hotels are any more an i was just there,
had a very nice ( although small ) room in Mandalay for $34, had everything u would find in a thai hotel for the same price BUT the thai room would be twice the size
the room in Bagan was only $20, bigger, bungalow, balcony air con, wifi, hot water, flat tv, sat stations, breakfast
the $75 i had in Mogok was equal to a 5,000 baht room anywhere in Thailand!!!!

The room in Hsipaw was EXTREMELY overpriced at $20 for a fan room but its getting on the LP guide book trail so. expect when the 5 gh's being built to be finished the price will drop to $10 ( with breakfast).

Of course these are low season prices,

I hear from friends living in Yangoon that they are very overpriced

Yes, but you are not really taking on board what happens in High season regards room prices.

Go back in January and let us know how you go.

I wonder if the Moto Trucks had decent brakes? The tombs were probably Chinese Origin. Buddhists usually cremate.

Looking forward to seeing Katha an George's old hangout.

Also renting bikes for a day in Mandalay from Zach and do the ancient cities

The tombs are Burmese as many Burmese in Shan state area are christian.

    short teaser;

Just back friday night from 13 days in Burma
Flew into Mandalay and than overnight train up to Myitkyina ( $23 and 20 hours with sleeper)
Spent 3 days trying to get permission to travel by river to Sinbo and on the Bhamo BUT no go
Putao: They will not allow u to book flight to Putao unless u have the special advance permission which to get u need to book hotels an tour
Flew My to Bhamo for $51 2 flights /week 35 minute flight
Took the express boat down to Kathu $13 7 hours Its a great river village and well worth visiting.
Nice down but lacking in hotels, had a small room with fan and window with view of river for $6 an electric went out from 10pm to 6 one night but it was still cool.
There is a new air con hotel near the long distance bus station for $25 a double
Note all our hotels so far were $30 (for a double with hot water, air con, cable tv an breakfast. You can get cheaper fan rooms
Express boat leaves at 5:30 am and we booked the cabin, ( just a cabin with a mat on the floor) for $30 and took 17 hours,
    Great trip and stopped often.
Would never take the IWT ferry as its 50% longer
Overall very very few tourists, it was VERY hot, averaged 34-38 in the day. Mandalay it hit 40 one day

2nd trip all done!! Lovely country, few tourists, not expensive, never paid more than $30 for aircon double with cable tv/breakfast

    March/April 2015
    Returned to Mandalay<
Overnight sleeper train to Myitkyina (20 hours $23)
Flight down to Bhamo ( they would not allow us to travel this part of the Irawadday River because of on going fighting in the area) and than two separate express boats down the Irawadday River ( one was 7 1/2 hours, one was 17 hours) , with a stop in Katha, ( George Orwells old home town in 1926) back to Mandalay.

Once again rented bikes and headed off to Migun, (one of the ancient cites)

Was a fantastic trip and cant wait to get back

added a lot to the mandalay section

Mong La opposite Daluo in China ( not near or accessible from Laos)

80 kms by road or so north of Kengtung Myanmar ( which is 4 hours or so from Mai Sai Thailand)

not sure it is open to westerners

Great photos, Richard. This was my first view of your thread. I was surprised that Mandalay streets appeared to be rather unfettered and not crowded. More like Laos than Thailand. Did you find that to be true in your case ? Again, thank you for sharing.
