They have no embassy there, you could probably pay an agent to get you one but would cost you more. Easier to get in Laos as Vietnam has more consular offices there. If you were flying into Vietnam then you could have gone on the Internet and got an introduction letter which you present at the airport to immigration and they give you a visa but they are not recognised for overland border crossings.

Thinking of going up the Mekhong to Megala in Sippsongpanna Yunnan so no time in Laos and back via Pnom Penh, looks like a trip to Bangkok or find an agent who I can trust my passport with.

Lao will give you a visa at the border.

I passed through Lao by bus to get to Vietnam. Paid $35 for a Lao visa for the couple of hours it took for the bus to travel through and $35 to come back. I was fuming.

Not really following here. The Mekong is the border between Thailand and Laos, then the border of Burma and Laos. Sort of a no mans land. You only need a visa when you step on dry land.

Is the ferry company telling you to get a visa?

    Oops, sorry.

My travel agent arranged a visa on entry letter for Vietnam.

Oddly, I just looked and the government website says can't use a letter at sea or land borders.

No Consulate in Chiang Mai. An agent would send your passport to Bangkok - you'd need some waiting time for that..
