I think the taxis are pretty cheap, but the only meter taxi that I went in was paid by someone else, so I've no idea how much. I think someone mentioned $1 per km. I had a private car with a guide and a driver; that was $88. Not the cheapest way to do it, but I don't mind sacrificing a bit of money to further educate the rabble on TD.

My hotel cost $45 a night, and was excellent. Compared with some of the tatty places you get in Bangkok for that money, I think it compares favourably.

I think food also costs a similar amount to Bangkok, but the Vietnamese don't manage to fuck things up like some Thai places do. A couple of people thought the meal at Bobby Chinn's was too expensive. If your idea of good food is eating on the street, then you're going to be ignorant about what good food really is.

Any suggestions as to where to go next, would be appreciated. Maybe Macao?

Why is it, you can wait an eternity for a bus, only for three to arrive at the same time?

Is the food spicy in VM? I once had salmon in some sort of Vietnamese red curry that was delicious.

Leave that place alone!

A very rude country built on gambling - pop over to HK, much better.

^ HK is OK, but if you haven't been to Beijing yet I would certinly go there before the Olympics. As it is they've now got a fucking Starbucks on every corner.

For a 3-4 day trip though, I really liked Beijing - the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Tienman Square, and of course Great Wall.

One thing I noticed about Beijing though was that prices were not cheap, which I had expected. They were very comparable with Thailand

A tad moralistic and judgmental generalization MM? What's OZ built on? Crims?

Macao is a great place, great food (and I don't like casinos) been there more than once and looking forward going again, so MtD go for it ... and HK is but a hydrofoil ride away and China borders Macao (need a visa though).

I've been to Hong Kong. It nearly bankrupted me!

Macao looks favourite, but China is appealing. I want to do the Silk Road, but my boss might get a bit funny if I took a month off work.

I've not had a proper look at Singapore, Jakarta or KL yet; just waiting for an invite...

KL is good for a look. Beer is a little expensive and the traffic is awful downtown. People seem to be friendlier than here in Phuket. And the Petronas Towers are quite spectacular, especially at night, like something from sci-fi.

Jakarta.

Been Macau - interesting place in that it is dead boring cos everyone is at the casino's, plenty of russian, thai and flipper whores there also.

found one non-whore niteclub - was literally empty before 4.00am - bloody mental time to START going out!

I agree with you KL is good, been twice in two years & going back again in April to see the F1 second year running, got a great package deal with Air Asia.
Not as cheap as BKK & Thailand, but nice & clean & generally people appear pretty frendly.
Petronas Towers very impressive, specially at night, last two times I've been overlooking the twin towers, although diffrent hotel this year still got the same view so I understand?

I spent a couple of weeks working in Jakarta a couple of years ago and have to admit I wasn't too impressed. It just didn't seem to have that pulse that other large cities have. I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel which was really really nice... the company paid for it.

Great thread MtD. You didn't happen to try any of the cobra wine they sell there did you?
