This is one of those sentences that makes me realise that I have no - and can have no - understanding at all of what goes on in the American psyche.
You and me both.

Actually wasn't there talk a while back of making it a criminal act to damage the flag, wonder what became of that? Realised how utterly wanked it was I expect.

The GOP is still hammering on the Ayers alleged link.

The problem is, I don't think it'll stick. There are too many problems in the US right now.

This is the old 60s, 'Nam protest era.

Erm....it was 40 years ago.

And honestly, who has killed more innocent civilians and done more damage? The Pentagon or Bill Ayers?

Here is a response to Palin's "terrorist" claim. Interesting that Palin uses the term "terrorist" in this day and age over an incident that is.....40 years old.

Note: this is biased.

The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln.

Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of $2 billion to the federal government. Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many elderly investors lost their life savings. The substantial political contributions that Keating had made to each of the senators, totalling $1.3 million, attracted considerable public and media attention.

Here is a public statement that has been endorsed by 900 fellow educators and scholars so far:
Quote:
We write to support our colleague Professor William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who is currently under determined and sustained political attack. Ayers is a nationally known scholar, member of the Faculty Senate at UIC, Vice President-elect of the American Educational Research Association, and sought after as a speaker and visiting scholar by other universities because of his exemplary scholarship, teaching, and service. Throughout the 20 years that he has been a valued faculty member at UIC, he has taught, advised, mentored, and supported hundreds of undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. students. He has pushed them to take seriously their responsibilities as educators in a democracy – to promote critical inquiry, dialogue, and debate; to encourage questioning and independent thinking; to value the full humanity of every person and to work for access and equity. Helping educators develop the capacity and ethical commitment to these responsibilities is at the core of what we do, and as a teacher he has always embraced debate and multiple perspectives. ...

I abhor these personal attack ads, but if McC is going to do it, he should have stuck to Wright, Rezko and the Chicago goons.

McCain was exonerated; freed from any question of guilt.
Quote:
''I found nothing in my investigation which caused me to question Senator McCain's integrity,'' said Robert Bennett, the Washington lawyer who was special counsel to the ethics panel during what is called the Keating Five investigation. Mr. Bennett, more recently, has been one of President Clinton's lawyers.

Senator McCain had taken $112,000 in Keating-related campaign donations, trips aboard Mr. Keating's corporate jet and family vacations at the executive's Bahamas hideaway. While legal, these gifts made his attendance at the meetings with federal regulators all the more questionable. (The other four senators had also taken large contributions from Mr. Keating, some of them far more than Mr. McCain.)

Before the controversial meetings, Mr. Keating had called Senator McCain a wimp, because he would not intervene for him more aggressively with the regulators, and the two men never spoke to each other again. And once the regulators told the senators that there was a criminal referral on the Keating case, Mr. McCain dropped the matter entirely. (Mr. Keating was eventually convicted on state and federal fraud charges and served four years in prison. He now lives in Arizona.)

But Senator McCain was the only Republican embroiled in the affair, and Democrats on the panel would not release him, even at the urging of his friend Mr. Rudman, who was then a senator and the senior Republican on the committee.

''McCain was going to remain their Republican hostage, no matter what,'' Mr. Rudman wrote in his memoir, ''Combat.'' The ethics investigation took two years to complete, which taught Mr. McCain he could not rely on the go-along-get-along ethos of the Senate in an era of growing partisan rancor.
Senate Inquiry In Keating Case Tested McCain - New York Times

McCain didn't pressure the regulators like the three Democrats. Three of the democrats didn't seek re-election. The word was they needed a Republican in the net so it wouldn't solely be a Democrat scandal. Begbie's post proves the effectiveness of the 'include a Republican' strategy: "accused of corruption"

^Doesn't matter, according to the same criteria that's being used to slur and impeach Obama's character all that matters is that McCain knew the guy (well enough to take money from him too, apparently).

You can't have it both ways.

Are you claiming he didn't take money from Keating ?

Odd that this is contrary to the evidence at the time.

If He Didn’t Know…
Let’s suspend disbelief for the moment and assume that Barack Obama didn’t actually know of Bill Ayers’s history as an unrepentant domestic terrorist in 1995 when Ayers and Obama joined forces in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge to funnel funds to Ayers’s radical education ideas and when Ayers and his wife (and fellow unrepentant domestic terrorist) Bernardine Dohrn hosted the political coming-out party for Obama. Well, then: When did Obama learn the news? And what steps did he then take to condemn Ayers’s terrorism and to disassociate himself from Ayers?

If, as appears to be the case, the answer to the latter question is “none”, that would strongly indicate that (at best) it simply didn’t matter to Obama that Ayers was an unrepentant domestic terrorist. In other words, Obama would have had the same course of dealings with Ayers whether or not he know of Ayers’s history

Hello!!!

Nobody is listening. Even the GOP pundits have conceded McCain has to put together a coherent economic strategy and cannot win by using the same failed tactics that Hillary used in her losing effort.

The negative run down the opponent strategy is only turning off undecided voters no matter which side does it.

^Well, Today's News From the Front VOTER-FRAUD CHAOS DEMS' 'NOVEMBER SURPRISE'?

... Ken Blaxkwell knows Ohio fraud ...

“ A perfect example is Ohio. Last Monday the Ohio Supreme Court, in a 4-3 decision, interpreted Ohio law to allow for people to register to vote and cast an absentee ballot on the same day.

(As the three dissenters noted, this directly contradicts Ohio's Constitution, which requires that a person register to vote 30 days in advance of actually casting that vote. But the Ohio Supreme Court is the last word on Ohio state law.)
So now the Obama campaign is using buses to take tens of thousands of people to go register and cast same-day votes. Some media reports say that the Obama camp hopes to get hundreds of thousands of votes this way

Barack Obama’s claims that he had no idea about William Ayers’ violent, radical history are simply false:

Was Obama Ignorant About Bill Ayers? Of Course Not.

Videos: The Ayers connection; Update: Obama doesn’t read newspapers?

William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn were very open, even boastful about their past. How many times does Barack Obama think he can get away with his “see no evil” act?
