This is an example of not only corruption but it's an example of the massive, weighty, inertia of the government entering a market. It competes with private industry sucking up business offering lower rates. The government program lumbers on, indifferent, running over anything in it's path taking too long to stop when it's gone too far. Bush tried to get the media to pay attention to this problem back in 2005. But what was the media busy doing instead? Pummeling Bush about the Iraq War. "It's Bush's fault" was the fashion.

| ^ True. Bush did try to tighten some regulations. BTW, "It's Bush' fault" is STILL in fashion, as demonstrated by Pelosi before the bailout bill vote. Quote:

| ^Whaaaaat?? The media doesn't (and hopefully never will) make policy. If the media is on the other side of any issue, it doesn't matter. Policy makers have an obligation to their parties and their constituents. I seriously doubt that Fanny Mae was doomed simply because the media was on the other side of the issue.

This started in the mid 90s, and continues up until now. It makes you wonder. The people the run the country (politicians) and the people who run these large companies are just not bright people. They were and are myopic. Stupidity, is part of the reason why this mess in going on. | |

| it seems some of our republican members and apologists have (conveniently) short memories. well here's a quick refresher......google 'ownership society'. and btw, the absurd deregulation policy that got us so deep into this mess was written and pushed through congress by sen phil gramm (R) of texas. oh, and by the way, up until about a month ago, he was mccain's chief economic advisor...until he got thrown under the bus for calling americans 'whiners'. |
