I doubt it will be enough though, and hopefully Obama will use this fact to motivate even more people to show up on the day and vote and put the result beyond dispute- because you can bet that the GOP will take matters to court on any flimsy pretext they can if they sense a chance of overcoming an election result in a state.

Bookmaker to pay out early on Obama victory

Posted 3 hours 26 minutes ago
Ireland's biggest bookmaker said it would pay out more than 1 million euros ($1.95 million) on bets that Barack Obama will be the next US president, three weeks before the election.
Dublin-based bookmaker Paddy Power said it made the "unprecedented decision" to pay on bets taken so far, following Wednesday's final campaign debate between Senator Obama and his Republican rival John McCain.

Think it would be "an ace in the hole".

At the moment the only thing the GOP knows for sure is there is something in their hole as they are "politically constipated". And it's the shits.

Very good and IMO well balanced!

I was very much undecided myself until this event as stated in the Post.

"The choice is made easy in part by Mr. McCain's disappointing campaign, above all his irresponsible selection of a running mate who is not ready to be president."

And how many of these first time registered voters are not counted in the polls?

It seems that the grassroots Obama campaign is being conducted well, and there is energy and enthusiasm behind it.

Quote:
Obama Counts on Boosting Voter Turnout in Republican States

By Kristin Jensen and Julianna Goldman

Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Four years ago, Ralph Bresler, a Democratic county chairman in southeast Virginia, had to pay a college student to go to a nearby party office to get a list of registered voters he could use to target supporters of presidential candidate John Kerry.
That approach yielded ``very few results,'' Bresler said, and Massachusetts Senator Kerry lost James City County by almost 23 points.
This year, Democratic nominee Barack Obama has an office in nearby Williamsburg, one of eight in the Hampton Roads area. Across the state, Obama and the Democratic National Committee have a combined 69 offices, compared with 20 for Republican John McCain and his party.
Obama's supporters are armed not only with voter lists but with detailed ``walk sheets'' containing people's views on specific issues. They have reached most of the neighborhoods in James City County and registered thousands of new voters in the effort to beat McCain in Virginia, which hasn't been carried by a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964.

``If you had told me a year ago that Obama would have an office in Williamsburg, I would have told you you had been drinking too much,'' said Bresler, 65.

Leading in Virginia
Going into last night's debate, the final one before the Nov. 4 election, Illinois Senator Obama was running slightly ahead in Virginia: A Rasmussen poll last week showed the Democrat leading 50-48; other polls show a wider lead. Now, he needs to ensure he can translate that edge into votes.

That means boosting turnout, a feat Democrats haven't sufficiently pulled off in the last two elections. This time, Obama has built the party's strongest get-out-the-vote operation in decades, said Curtis Gans, director of the Center for the Study of the American Electorate at American University in Washington.
``It's the best thing that's going right now,'' Gans said.

To be sure, Gans said it was only the best operation overall since President George W. Bush's in 2004, when strategist Karl Rove crafted a program that allowed Republicans to target voters. The Bush campaign also had supporters reach out to others in their community, a model Obama is emulating this year.
``People who come to the door are authentic, enthusiastic and can immediately strike up a rapport,'' Donald Green, director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Now, ``both sides are on top of the idea.''

Across the U.S.

The Obama campaign is replicating this tactic in swing states and Republican areas across the U.S.

Cheryl Hibbeler, 54, took a sabbatical from her job as a customer-service representative last year to work for the Democrats in Missouri. She now spends 40 to 60 hours a week at an Obama office in St. Peters and on two local campaigns.

In her St. Charles County, which encompasses suburban St. Louis and went for Bush by almost 18 percentage points in 2004, Obama's campaign has registered about 11,000 new voters. Those and other supporters or possible supporters ``are going to hear from us two, three, four, five, six times,'' between now and Election Day, Hibbeler said.
Bill James, a 65-year-old retired electrical engineer in Nevada, told a similar story. He said he had canvassed for Obama near his home in Henderson several times, and in much more effective ways than when he worked for Kerry four years ago.
Kerry Campaign

``With Kerry they would just say `work these streets and put stuff up on every door,''' James said. By contrast, the Obama campaign provided a spreadsheet identifying only those homeowners who would be open to voting for the candidate.
On college campuses, the Democrats are even offering to drive students to their home districts to vote. They are also allowing voters to set up ride-sharing groups on the campaign's Web site.

Colin Powell will go on "Meet the Press" on Sunday. Will he endorse Obama?

It's back to ---> momentum

Colin Powell might endorse Obama

Once considered a potential McCain running mate, Powell may endorse McCain's Democratic rival.

Retired Gen. Colin Powell, once considered a potential running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), now may endorse his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), according to Republican sources. But an air of mystery surrounds Powell's planned live appearance Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," and no one is sure what he will say.

Powell’s unassailable national security credentials could sway voters who are vacillating about whether Obama is ready to be commander in chief, and his endorsement of the Illinois senator would make a national security emphasis by McCain in the election's closing days extremely difficult.

Powell, 71, a professional soldier for 35 years, has advised the last three Republican presidents.

The general’s camp is being coy about what he might or might not say on Sunday. But some McCain advisers suspect, without being sure, that Powell will endorse Obama.

“It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain," a McCain official said. "It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.”

The Guardian is even more emphatic-

Colin Powell expected to endorse Obama

Former secretary of state Colin Powell is expected to use a high-profile television appearance tomorrow to end months of speculation by throwing his support behind Barack Obama.
His decision to go on television just two weeks before the election suggests he has finally made up his mind.

I have been curious as to why Powell has remained quiet, and it may be because of doubts about Obama's intentions towards the military. If he does endorse Obama then McCain will be sunk.

In general (no pun intended), Powell has historically been very quiet about his political leanings. Taking the job as Secretary of State under Bush turned out to be a political disaster for Powell and likely cut any hopes he had of ever running for Pres himself. Although he has been relatively silent about the whole episode during his tenure as Sec State, the times I have seen him interviewed, he clearly has a low opinion of GWB and his policies.

Powell, as with most ex generals, believe the military should only be used as a very last resort. I believe Obama's policies are in line with this thinking and therefore, if Powell is to endorse anyone, it will be Obama even though military spending is likely to decrease under an Obama administration.

An endorsement by anyone will not sink a candidate. But it might to momentum.

Also, Powell was pushed into a corner in GWB's administration, and actually fired after the 2004 election.

I would not be surprised if both McCain and Obama asked Powell to serve in the next administration in some form or another.

Powell (as you know) is highly respected in the USA, and he had very high ratings in the early 90s in open Presidential polling, that transcended all racial groups.

If Powell endorses Obama (which I think he will) it will be a positive thing for BO.

Souce: cnn and msnbc homepages.

No surprises here, but more Momentum for BO.

And, BO can talk with Powell in private and then tell the public, "I'd ask Colin Powell to be in my cabinet or run an agency."

It's a win-win situation for Obama.

Bollix. All he does is talk about change. So this evening at the Chinese I had a number 101 and 35 instead of my usual 137 and 62. And it was awful. So thanks for nothing.

Off-topic and you've missed the point.

No, he's not about the change. He never was.

It's about "why" Obama will win.

Nothing will really change, under BO.

It's the same as any politician, just a new fresh face, and perhaps a couple of side-policies.
