Vietnam to end US adoption Scheme

BBC NEWS | World | Asia-Pacific | Vietnam to end US adoption scheme

Quote:
Vietnam to end US adoption scheme

The Vietnamese government has said it will end an adoption agreement with the US, amid accusations of corruption.

Vietnam said it would stop accepting adoption applications after 1 July, cutting short a programme that had been up for renewal on 1 September.

A recent report from the US embassy in Hanoi cited cases in which children had allegedly been sold and families pressured to give up their babies.

Vietnam has dismissed the claims, which it described as unfair.

"The US report includes a lot of distorted information, it is untrue," said Vu Duc Long, director of Vietnam's International Adoption Agency.
Seems Vietnam has taken its ball and gone home - or maybe it is just now staying home with the ball. After the US Embassy released a report that shed a rather negative light on adoption abuses in Vietnam, they not only refused to renew the current agreement, they ended it months in advance.

I got no truck with not renewing the agreement, but basically reneging on a signed agreement is taking things a bit too far IMHO.

Side note #1:
Not to sound too jingoistic and god forbid racist, I never quite understood the desire to adopt from abroad anyway. Seems there are plenty of orphans already in the US?

I have an acquantance from work that was looking into adopting from China. As they explained to me the big driving force for them in the desire to go abroad was the US leagal system. Seems in their opinion it would leave them too open to future issues with the childs relatives (mom, dad, grandparents, etc) if they adopted a US child.

Side note #2:
Did they have to call it a scheme? The word scheme to me implies someting not quite on the level in the first place.

i have had the same thought on numerous occasions. however, when i looked up the word ,the negative connotation is only one of the three definitions. perhaps its a merkan thing.

Yes. I know someone that adopted from overseas because they claim the legal system in the US is more difficult, time constraining, etc.

As for babies being sold and people pressured to give them up, I can certainly believe it. This is the way the culture works. Not good.

Scheme is not a negative word in the UK.

In the USA "scheme" is considered negative.

Call me a cynic but I'm skeptical of this overseas adoption marlarcky. Strikes me as a bit of a celebratory driven 'fad' or trend.

For couples who want a child and can't make one, adoption is a good option. The litigious nature of US adoption procedures make overseas adoption an attractive alternative.

The fuckwit celebs (Madonna, Jolie) who adopt kids as if buying pets aren't the norm.

While I understand the argument as it relates to how difficult it can be in the US to adopt a US child due to the system - interviews, home inspections, etc, etc. What I don't quite understand is why parents that adopt from abroad would not be held up to similar standards - at least as it relates to bringing the adopted child back to live in the US.

Seems the system is a bit farked if they are making folks jump thru hoops to adopt a child from the US (under the guise that they are watching out for the best interest of the child), but only make those that adopt abroad go thru a standard visa process for the child.

Are there implications related to how the different children are valued by a society that has a higher hurdle to jump to adopt one vs the other?

Maybe the powers that be figure ending up with bad parents here in the US, is better than living with no parents in China/Vietnam/Africa?

IMHO there should not be different standard/rules for imports vs home grown models.
