Not exactly.
Company I work for had a couple semi's out of Puerto Madyrn (sp), Argentina and there were serveral wells drilled (when the weather allowed) with pay in various zones. Probably be more rigs down there now if there were any available and if weather didn't suck as bad as it does in those waters.
So these rigs were drilling in the Falklands, but operating out of Argentina. That's a novelty.
Uh...the war was like, over, by then and Argentina was the closest point for workboats etc to stage from.

There's a license dispute going on between the Falklands and Argentina.

Well, there's so much oil in 1200 to 3K meters offshore Brazil...80% of the world's deepwater rigs are all tied up here anyhow. I have no desire to go back to Argentina.

In terms of offshore drilling off the coastal US, as I understand it, most of the offshore platforms would be invisible from the shore anyway, so I don't understand the aesthetics argument, nor the individual states argument except insofar as the risk of an oil spill.

The Terminator speaks:

"Politicians have been throwing around all kinds of ideas in response to the skyrocketing energy prices, from the rethinking of nuclear power to pushing biofuels and more renewables and ending the ban on offshore drilling, it goes on and on the list," Schwarzenegger said.

"But, anyone who tells you this will lower our gas prices anytime soon is blowing smoke."
