Saddam Hussein never gassed his own people. This is old propaganda. It's a lie and repeated over and over. Saddam did torture and execute his own people (Arabic Sunnis & Shiites), but he never gassed them. Kurds are NOT his people. They are ethnically not Arabic, and they don't speak the Arabic language.

That statement was that the Kurds were/are are "his own people." The Kurds are not Turkish, but millions live in Turkey. They aren't Turkish. I have worked with Turkish people. Same as in other countries where Kurds live. The Kurdish issue in Iraq is another example of how the Middle East was carved up by Western powers, creating nation-states with different ethnic, racial, religious, and cultural groups. Reminds one of what Stalin did in the Ngorno-Karabach region.

Yes, the Kurds are proud of their heritage. Yes, some have intermarried in Turkey. And, Kurds speak Kurdish, and in northern Iraq (in "Kurdistan") the Kurds fly a separate flag, frown upon Arabic being spoken there, and have stated they want a Kurdish independent or semi-independent state. so, to reiterate: Saddam never gassed his own people - because he (his cousin, chemical Ali) gassed the Kurds in Iraq. The Kurds are not Saddam's people. (Living in the same political nation-state created by Westerners makes no difference.) Saddam Hussein's name is Hussein al-Tikriti, because he's from the town of Tikrit, and Hussein is a secular Sunni Arab.

| In an interview former South Viet premier KY was asked about what he thought of the plight of the "boat people" He responded, they are not my people. Tribalism really is a nasty business. |
