she's simply doing the bidding of her handlers, or she's going to play a major role in setting policy for the obama administration? surely it can't be both, can it? | |

^ Sure can. She has pillow talks where she gets her ideas across to huz, and the handlers tell her how to convey her opinion so its like she's just backing huz ideas and doesn't sound so snooty (she's still having probs with that).

It has overshot its target on occasion, with affirmative action, if implemented as intended, accepted applicants should be equally qualified as others. But criteria for university admission include a number of components, some of which are not so clear cut, such as one's essays and their subject, extracurricular activities and the personal interview. There is considerable scope for universities to select applicants, and 'race' comes into it, in order to encourage better representation of traditionally disadvantaged groups.

Public school institutions in the US range from outstanding to appalling. To a great degree this is due to financial ability of local communities to fund their schools rather than a racial issue. Not all black communities are poor and not all white communities are rich. All the government (local and federal) can do is ensure the disparity between low and high economic communities is minimal. Once this is done then it is up to the community (parents) to make sure they don't squander the opportunity they are given. The result, along with anti-discrimination laws, will ensure universities and business will have a mix of members representative of the country's demographics without the imposition of quotas. The "quota" system which is the bone of contention in "affirmative action" is the result of government's failure to ensure equality in all public educational institutions.

Racial quotas are racist. Yep, Norton, let the higher accomplished students get admitted. What, get bennies coz of your skin colour? What a load of crock and always has been. Same in Canada: to get a government job, the application asks if you consider yourself a member of a minor ethnic group. 555 I just checked on scholarships for blacks and whites. Lots for blacks and a Boston U ex-admin proposed a caucasian scholarship and got beaten for it. But what about poor white kids? I add just one of many anti-quota stories available on the net: "Lawyers for President Bush filed a pair of briefs with the Supreme Court tonight, saying the University of Michigan's admissions programs in both the undergraduate and law schools designed to increase minority enrollment were quota systems in disguise and were unconstitutional. ''It ignores available race-neutral alternatives and amounts to a forbidden racial quota,'' the brief signed by Theodore B. Olson, the solicitor general, said of the undergraduate admissions program. That program awards points to minority applicants. In the brief siding with two white students who were rejected by the undergraduate program while minority candidates with lesser academic credentials were admitted, the administration argued that the university used two impermissible methods. The system provided 20 points to minority candidates in a 150-point formula that assessed their qualifications. Also, minority students often had their applications marked so they could receive a second look not given to nonminority candidates. ''Taken together,'' the administration said, ''the University's substantial race-based 'bonus' and its practice of providing preferred minorities special, individualized review denied to nonpreferred applicants leaves little doubt that the University's current admissions policies operates as a disguised racial quota.'' The law school program, which does not award points to minority applicants but counts race as one factor among many that could enhance an applicant's chances of admission, was also unconstitutional, the administration lawyers said in a second brief, because it also was the equivalent of a quota." BUSH AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: THE OVERVIEW; U.S. Says Michigan System Is Equivalent to a Quota - New York Times Yep, a friend lost on on his med school acceptance because of this racial quota BS. He had a 3.9 GPA.

^ You're right, Strolls. Poor black kids with lousy grades and few redeeming qualities would never get in and then grow up to be civil rights lawyers who only win cases coz the judge deems the defendent to be racist. Yep. Good system.
