The three Democratic presidential hopefuls leading in early preference polls...opposed the decision.
Obama weighed in with support for the dissenting opinion of Justice Ruth Ginsberg, who wrote that the ruling “tolerates, indeed applauds, federal intervention to ban nationwide a procedure found necessary and proper in certain cases by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.”

I disagree. The baby has no voice in the matter, and it is a living entity.

first of all, you're either very confused....or being disingenuous.

1. boon mee posted that obama "opposed any bans on partial birth abortions"---and let's just put aside for a moment how pejorative that description is.

2. i asked him to provide a link indicating that obama took this position.

3. you put up an NYT article which only states that obama's reaction to a supreme court ruling was that he was,
Quote:
"extremely concerned that this ruling will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman’s right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade which is established federal law and a matter of equal rights for women.”.
enlighten me as to how this indicates he is "opposed to any bans on partial birth abortion'.
nice try.

next!

so start a thread then....this one is about michelle obama....and how often she says "you know", and the thesis she wrote 20 years ago, and how some think she looks like a character in planet of the apes.

Michelle Obama obviously has strong views on this Wright debacle. I watched her reaction, sitting by Barak's side while he was explaining the Wright issue.

She gave a CNN interview today.

Michelle Obama: Let's move past Wright, get back to issues

Quote:
She said it's time for the campaign to move forward from the controversy and return the focus to issues like the economy and health care.
"With all due respect, we're moving forward," she said. "Barack was so clear, and he's been so open about this issue, and he speaks for me as well."
Quote:
The interviewer later prefaced a question by saying she wanted to "turn the page" from the Wright controversy.
"No, you don't," Mrs. Obama replied.
Michelle Obama: Let's move past Wright, get back to issues - CNN.com

I admire her spunk and intelligence. I have a feeling there are lots of things smoldering under her cool surface, but she's smart to exercise restraint. She'll need it in the White House.....

^What's the difference between moving forward and turning the page?

It is what it is and they can't escape it, they have to deal with it. I personally think the "blue-collars have to cling to guns and religion" comment will resonate far longer in the minds of voters.

Good old Faux are going for the jugular on this rather trivial issue.

Considering the massive media attention to it (Much, much more than devoted to such small things as, say, what Obama proposes to do about the economy, and Iraq) I have to ask a question- is this really so important to the average American?

It's quite clear to me that the Republicans want Hillary to win the Dem nomination- shit, right now they're amongst her biggest fans. Why might that be?

This fact alone should give rational people pause for thought. But are electorates rational?

^^Well, here you go:

Obama's wife joins push to court working class

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - If Michelle Obama had her way, her husband Barack would have become a teacher, a writer, a singer, a dancer -- anything but a politician with the chance to make history as the first black U.S. president.

She described to an audience in Indianapolis how they struggled -- like any other young couple in Middle America -- to raise two children and pay off debts.

"We are still so close to the lives that most Americans are living," she said. "And I don't know about you but for most of my lifetime, I've felt disconnected from Washington."
Quote:
"We're a young couple with small kids with all the challenges and the emotions and the stresses that come with raising kids, like being a working mom," said Michelle Obama, 44, who is on leave from her job as hospital administrator and now divides her time between campaigning and raising the couple's two daughters -- Sasha, 6, and Malia, 9.

Though she is a Harvard-trained lawyer like her 46-year-old husband, she said the couple was not far from the years of paying off student loans and working to "keep up with bills."

T
I watched the Bill O'Reilly interview part 1 this morning and he really let Hilary slide, much more so than normal I thought. At the same time, she did very well against him, and Fox then had their "analysts" on praising Hilary as the one who can win the Reagan Democrats, etc..

Fox seems to be on a "destroy Obama" mission right now, so they must think McCain has a better chance against Hilary than against Obama.

Michelle Obama can try to court the middle class all she wants. But it's painfully obvious that two Harvard lawyers, one a US senator and one a hospital administrator, that combined for a cool mil every year since 05, are not typical middle class folk. Maybe she thinks the connection would come naturally because she's black (working a negative stereotype to her favor).

Empathy, OK. Understanding certainly. But the whole, "I'm here with you," line is a bit much.

Certainly the McCains and Clintons wouldn't try it. Wonder why Michelle is.

^^ I basically agree. Presidential contenders are not everyday normal folk, so why should they pretend to be so? Accuse them of being elitist, how terrible. Of course they're bluddy elitist, they're running for the Presidency.

Michelle's definitely humble beginnings, and subsequent achievements, might score a degree of empathy with some. As might Obamas growing up in a one parent family- although middle class really. Dunno- was this considered a positive factor in Bill Clintons election?

Or, conversely, was Bushes rather large silver spoon (both of them) considered a negative factor in running for Pres? You certainly could not accuse them of being normal folk.

Don't the Obamas come from a working class/lower middle-class background?

This is not something which disappears with education or money.

^Stroller is right. The scars, if you want to call them that, of being raised poor and disadvantaged, then struggling to and reaching high success, never leave someone. Hilary again, today, did a great job of circumventing O'Reilly's usual tricks. She called herself and him wealthy people who were blessed. She completely diffused the issue by not trying to pretend she's normal folk.

Don't think they serve beer on Bill's show though...

Why is it you left-leaning folks consider this a trivial issue when it is clearly not? If anything, it reveals BO's character - or lack of one...

^ Left leaning might be your gettout clause there.
The official Leftist ideology is Atheism booner.
But I really don't see why such a huge fuss.
The way I grew up, if some scatty Priest spouted nonsense, people just shrugged their shoulders.
