Neither McCain or Obama seem to be personally interested in pursuing the sort of smear politics that characterised the Rove/Bush administration. It adds to my estimation of them both, and certainly underscores the substantial differences between McCain and the Republican Right.

Jeez, if I was Obama I might even consider offering Mccain some role in the new administration, like Veterans Affairs or whatever.

It's been done before, though I don't think with a opposition presidential nominee. Elizabeth Dole rings a bell.

Heh...that's very condescending of you.

Better that McCain offer BO a spot in his administration supervising the inner city or some such...

In a general sense McCain seems a lot like John Kerry, an opportunist who married into money in order the pay his way in politics. However unlike Kerry who is generally harmless, McCain is a nasty piece of work.

The White Stuff
A new NEWSWEEK Poll underscores Obama's racial challenge.

By Jonathan Darman

May 23, 2008
This is what some posters have mentioned: the white vote. And this is what I'm concerned with. As the campaign goes into the final phases, a racial divide on voting may happening. It's disappointing:

Quote:
Even as he closes in on the Democratic nomination for the presidency, Sen. Barack Obama is facing lingering problems winning the support of white voters--including some in his own party. In a new NEWSWEEK Poll of registered voters, Obama trails presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain 40 percent to 52 percent among whites. Sen. Hillary Clinton, Obama's challenger for the Democratic nomination, also trails McCain among white voters but by a smaller margin, 44 percent to 48 percent. (For the complete results, click here).

Among voters overall, however, Obama fares better, tying McCain 46 percent to 46 percent in a hypothetical match-up.

I presume Stroller was joking.

McCain is not very religious and many of his views are anathema to the religious extremists (or, religious right).

He does need a portion of them to go to the polls, however, so he may say some coundbytes, and even waffel if necesarry towards the end of the campaign. Or, maybe he won't.

so the handpicked members of the media had 3 hours to review 1,173 pages of medical records.

isn't that about 9 seconds per page?

Medical files indicate McCain in reasonably good health

The Republicans are stuck with him. As John says and I agree, "it is what it is". GOP will have to figure out a winning strategy and so far I don't see one springing out.

they're going to get crushed in house and senate elections, but i read something today (politico?) about how the GOP likes mccain's chances with the electoral map.

here it is...

Quote:
the contours of the electoral map, combined with McCain’s unique strengths and the nature of Obama’s possible vulnerabilities, have led to a cautious and muted optimism that McCain could actually surpass Bush’s 35-electoral-vote victory in 2004. Though they expect he would finish far closer to Obama in the popular vote, the thinking is that he could win by as many 50 electoral votes.

Seems to be the same argument Hillary is using. Another thing of note is although McCain has raised little money, the Rep Party has a much larger war chest than the Dems. This is always a factor.

John McCain lays the smackdown on BO w/regard to Veterans:
[i] take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.
"Perhaps, if Senator Obama would take the time and trouble to understand this issue he would learn to debate an honest disagreement respectfully. But, as he always does, he prefers impugning the motives of his opponent, and exploiting a thoughtful difference of opinion to advance his own ambitions. If that is how he would behave as President, the country would regret his election."

Regret? Regret? BO in the White House would be a National disaster!!

Anyway, McCain went on Ellen Degeneres show, where she attacked him for his anti-gay marriage stance. He held up fine. Let's see BO on Fox.
