Gallup/USA Today Poll: McCain +4

Republican presidential candidate John McCain moved from being behind by 6 points among "likely" voters a month ago to a 4-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama among that group in the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. McCain still trails slightly among the broader universe of "registered" voters. By both measures, the race is tight.
The Friday-Sunday poll, mostly conducted as Obama was returning from his much-publicized overseas trip and released just this hour, shows McCain now ahead 49%-45% among voters that Gallup believes are most likely to go to the polls in November. In late June, he was behind among likely voters, 50%-44%.

USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.
Polling data is hard to read, IMO. I'd like to see the sample size and if there is daily tracking. I'll check out rassmusen and another. There also has been a difference between [i]registered voter[i] samples and likely (registered) voter samples.

i remember reading here in issues how mccain never mentions vietnam, and that it is others who keep perpetuating the mythology about what did or didn't happen to him there.

well, when asked by a comedian about the huge gaffe he made last week when he couldn't remember how many houses he owned, mccain played the victim card...
Quote:
Leno didn’t let McCain off the hook, offering him $1 million to answer how many houses he owned and noting that the White House would be a nice addition.

“You’ve got enough of those. ... You need a white one, too?”

McCain used that to turn serious for a few moments, and had a ready answer after stumbling over the “How many houses do you own” question in last week’s interview with Politico.

“I spent 5½ years in a prison cell; I didn’t have a house,”
McCain said.

He may not mention Viet Nam but his catchphrase seems to be "I was a prisoner of war."
Interviewer "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah Iraq?"
McCain "I was a prisoner of war."
Interviewer "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah taxes?"
McCain "I was a prisoner of war."
Interviewer "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah gas prices?"
McCain "I was a prisoner of war."
Interviewer "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah education?"
McCain "I was a prisoner of war. If Mr Hippo were American, I would put him in charge of education because he was a student!"

Here's an analysis of a recent ad by McCain. Below, is the actual ad.

Do you agree that this ad is misleading, after reading the analysis?

Quote:
Analysis: McCain's Iran ad misleading

TITLE: "Tiny."
By The Associated Press

TITLE: "Tiny."
LENGTH: 30 seconds.
AIRING: In key states where McCain is on the air.

SCRIPT: Announcer: "Iran. Radical Islamic government. Known sponsors of terrorism. Developing nuclear capabilities to 'generate power' but threatening to eliminate Israel. Obama says Iran is a 'tiny' country, 'doesn't pose a serious threat.' Terrorism, destroying Israel, those aren't 'serious threats'? Obama - dangerously unprepared to be president."

John McCain: "I'm John McCain and I approved this message."

ANALYSIS: The ad is misleading because it states that Obama said Iran is "tiny" and "doesn't pose a serious threat" without noting that Obama was comparing the threat Iran poses today to the Soviet Union, the nuclear-armed adversary of the U.S. during the Cold War.

The nature of the threat from Iran, which the U.S. believes has nuclear ambitions, and how to deal with it are at the heart of a key policy debate for Obama and McCain. The ad seeks to boil down Obama's position to one that supports the McCain drumbeat that Obama isn't ready to be president.

For his part, McCain wants tougher sanctions on Iran and, like President Bush, doesn't support high-level talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Both Republicans see talks with such adversaries as legitimizing them and bringing them unwarranted attention.

In July 2007, Obama first stirred debate among his rivals for the Democratic nomination as well as among Republicans by asserting that he would be willing to meet - without conditions - in the first year of his presidency with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea. Obama later questioned whether Ahmadinejad would be "the right person" with whom to discuss U.S.-Iran relations. Still, Obama argues that direct diplomacy with Iran would help the U.S. press for tougher international sanctions.

Last May in Pendleton, Ore., Obama reiterated his belief that the U.S. is strong enough to talk with its adversaries. In calling Iran "tiny" compared to the Soviet Union and having a small fraction of the Soviet military force, he noted that direct diplomacy with the Soviets was a bipartisan policy for decades in spite of their threat.

"Strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries," Obama said at the time. "I mean, think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela - these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying, 'We're going to wipe you off the planet.'"
KEY IMAGES: Photographs of Ahmadinejad and a sign that reads, "Don't forget to say death to America," the image of an industrial plant, a photo of Ahmadinejad looking at machinery, a photo of Obama that is followed by armed foreign soldiers, a terrorist and the Israeli flag before another photo of Obama. The spot ends with a photo of McCain.

^ Not a bad pick at all Jet, but I think the Republican party machine would consider him too liberal (in reality, Centrist). He'd certainly steal some votes off the undecided Hillaryites though.

Misleading yes but not a lie, but both sides fill there ads and talk with truths that tell only half the story - the story they want to tell. No different for the blue team than it is for the red team:

Here some misleading bits from the blue team convention:
The Associated Press: FactCheck: The fuller story in Denver

The Associated Press: FactCheck: Claims omit details on McCain record

Not to worry plenty of misleading bit will be spouted off at the red team convention as well.

if you want to guarantee that the base stays home, put pro choice jew from NE on the republican ticket.

that said, there something peculiar going on between rove, lieberman and mccain...
Quote:
Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation.

Lieberman dismissed the request, these sources agreed.

Lieberman “laughed at the suggestion and certainly did not call [McCain] on it,” said one source familiar with the details.

“Rove called Lieberman,” recounted a second source. “Lieberman told him he would not make that call.”

Rove did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
the most important thing to keep in mind is that rove is crafty. secondly, his legacy hinges on a republican being elected to the WH in 2008 just as much as GWB's does....this would be an interesting (and wholly disingenuous) way to make it seem like there really is sunlight between bush/mccain.
