I didn't know that North was involved in the hostage situation, which took place from 1980-81.

Iran-Contra came later: secretly selling arms to Iran to fund the Contras in Nicaragua.
That's right, Ollie (aka the Patriot) brokered a deal with Iran/Nicaragua to free the hostages when Reagan took office.
I stand to be corrected Boon,

but I thought that Iran-Contra occurred during the mid-80s, after Congress had halted financial support for the Contras. That's when Reagan circumvented it using the arm sales.

The American hostages were released the day of Reagan's inauguration in January of 1981.

Jimmah had four years in Office, but the Iran hostages were held for 444 days, from Nov. 4th 1979 to Jan 20 1981, when they were released. Or the final one third of his term.

"The crisis ended with the signing of the Algiers Accords in Algeria on January 19, 1981. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the following day, just minutes after the new American president Ronald Reagan was sworn in."
