    Blackingstone Rock, Dartmoor

We are enjoying a nice sunny start to spring in England this week, as confirmed by a look out of the window yesterday morning.

After a morning of laying a new slab path across the garden, I decided on an afternoon out, and left the New Forest National Park to head to one of my favourite alternative locals yesterday, Dartmoor National Park, which is larger and more hilly & barren than the New Forest. There are some splendid driving roads there, especially the winding route from Princetown to Newton Abbot.

I was specifically seeking somewhere I went often as a kid, but it was tricky to find, even with satnav. I did eventually find it, namely Blackingstone Rock.

    The entrance

And a sign at the base

Blackingstone Rock is a granite outcrop, of which there are many spread across Dartmoor.

There is a steep staircase to the top, which attracts rainbows

Time to take a look up there

Some nice views from the top

A longer range view from the other side

That's a fair old drive in an afternoon. How long did it take you?

Looks great, and living in Bangkok I missed hiking in the countryside. (Which I now can in Hong Kong).

As a child I was too enfeebled to participate on the school's Ten Tors team. (Kids used to literally die on it). I left that expedition to the likes of Jandajoy and his bruvvers !!

Blackingstone Rock is near Moretonhampstead. (East Dartmoor)

I can't understand why he'd be driving from Newton Abbot to Princeton (West)

Desperate to trash anything I say or do?

Duh! I went through Longdown to get to Blackingstone Rock, then after that I drove across Dartmoor and down to Newton Abbot. It is possible to go to TWO places in one day, having one of those strange modern fangled contraptions called a car. Arrived at Blackingstone at 3:15pm, and Newton Abbot at 5pm for a spot of shopping. Then back to the Highwaymans Inn at Chudleigh, a lovely thatched pub, for some nosh at 6:30pm.

I know it well. In fact my brothers' offices are walking distance.

Incidentally, I wasn't out to thrash your thread, I was simply impressed at the timing.
