| A set of gates like these. ![]() A simple sign on the gate post pillar. ![]() Why, you may well wonder. I drove in, just to see what would happen. The Police Vehicle was alongside me in seconds, and I do mean seconds. I don't know where he came from. I asked the 'Bobby' if we could go in and have a look around. ![]() Not unless you have an official invitation and booking he replied in a very courteous manner. You can come to the gate-house though and turn round there. Follow me, and wait until I speak with the Gate Officer. Then you will have to leave, he stated. ![]() I thanked him for his courtesy and apologised for calling in. ![]() Next time I want to visit Prince Charles at Highgrove, I'll go through the proper channels. ![]() Flobo was well suited. She loved it. We are both staunch Royalists.

One thing about the UK in general, we never really know for sure from one minute to the next, exactly what the weather is going to do. ![]() So if you plan going out for the day, open the door and get a scene like this. ![]() So what. Put a brolly and a couple of macs in the boot. Get on with it. Being here is the important issue, not the weather, rain, hail, snow, fog, or shine. It's special. ![]() The day's that the rain came down. ![]() You need such weather variations to find regular scenes of this nature. ![]() We pulled into the beautiful village of Burnsall. ![]() Quite a bit of history attached to it as well. I'll get round to the details in a future post. As it is, the panoramic views and the real verdancy of the village in general is more than a pleasing sight. Long may it rain and be sunny. ![]() Yeah! Keep the grass growing Mister. Don't let me forget though. Dick Whittington came from Burnsall. ![]() Lord, Lord, Lord won't you look at it rain.

The Wharfe Bridge at Burnsall, is rather special. ![]() It's a spectacular looking Bridge, by all accounts, one of the most photographed in the Dales. It looks good enough to last 10,000 years. Burnsall sits on the Banks of the very beautiful River Wharfe. It's sheltered by the Barden Moor, one of the most really beautiful villages in The Yorkshire Dales. Aren't they all though. Nice hillside areas. ![]() Really nice come to think of it. Look at the muscle on those critters. Spectacular. On the surrounding hillsides, there are cultivated terraces of 'lynchets' which were ploughed by some of the very earliest inhabitants of this region about 1,000 years since. Nowadays the scenic and very attractive village is a hot-spot for tourists and visitors from all over the world. Others come to this special village via The Dales Way Path, running North to the Lake District. Flobo had a pot of tea, I had a mug of 'milky coffee' at the little village café. ![]() Amazing views. Oh yes, we had a couple of pieces of toast between us. We both felt peckish.

The variations in weather caused the reservoirs even to cough up rough. ![]() The Village areas seem to look more attractive with a bit of rain. ![]() It's a psychological effect of course. Nothing more. ![]() Then again, it can suddenly seem like 'Paradise Lost.' ![]() Every once in a while, I didn't know if I was driving on the road or had taken a ferry down The Ribble. But to be honest, it wasn't an issue. It was a brillaint day out.

Lofthouse, another amazingly beautiful village, high on hill-side. ![]() They shouldn't get flooded in these locations, the rain-water runs down the hill side as fast as it falls. ![]() Good job as well. ![]() The cottages and homes in general are really attractive. There were a great number of mines once upon a time in these locations. Obviously a large number of fatalities too with flooding and other accidents. ![]() There have not been many changes to the village over the years at all. There is only one Public house. ![]() 'The Crown' There is one small shop which is the Post Office and general store. ![]() It's not that long since this was as far as you could go. The road continues, but after the top of the village, it is a dirt track leading to the moors and Leighton Reservoir. Not fit to take The Merc down. How Stean Gorge is just around the corner. ![]() A very beautiful, attractive and interesting area throughout. ![]() Really well maintained and presented. ![]() If you place this one on full screen, you can see down into the gorge. Raindrops are falling on my head.. ![]() The cows were well and truly ready for milking. ![]() Udder than that, not a lot to say! Unless it's;- ![]() Turn the wiper speed up. ![]() Sights like these are quite amazing. I hope you like the photographs. Might receive a few more Greens on this approach to 20,000 hits. That would be special.

At times looking out across the various valleys or countryside in general it's quite amazing all the little things you notice, when simply glancing would be the regular attitude to take. ![]() We don't come across so many overhead cables nowadays, everything around the towns has been re-situated below ground. It's natural of course for overheads to be prevalent in the countryside. Obviously it has the natural drawbacks to faults occurring mainly during the winter months, but all in all, the installations and general maintenance are tidy, safe, and well provided. The slates on the roof of this home are those very thick type which I have spoken of previously on these pages. More like patio flags. They need to be well maintained, there would be little or nothing much at all left of his conservatory if they came a tumbling down. ![]() Haven't the owners got a beautiful panoramic outlook here. So much to look at, a few chickens in the coop behind the wall, that has to be a bonus, the forests which he must have watched grow from young saplings, all the simplicity of the dry stone walls, their maintenance the grazing and farm production land in general. Plus of course the other odd residences and farms incorporating the general activity of the locals. His neighbours. I actually took an additional photograph of the rear, to take in the good-workmanship we can attribute to the electrical installations. ![]() The obvious maintenance of his roof slates, not too long ago since they were re-pointed, the ridge tiles will have to be well bedded, for protection against the threats from the very regular wintry strong winds associated in these isolated parts of the country. Nice reservoir down below too. ![]() Gorgeous section of road here. It's amazing on days like this, you can smell the countryside after a heavy downfall. It's quite invigorating in more ways than one.

Tosside is a cute, nice little hamlet with an interesting location on the map. It's nicely nestled in The forest of Bowland, the eastern half of the village is in Yorkshire, the western side in Lancashire. It has a small population, about a hundred homes. The Public House here drew my attention. ![]() The Dog and Partridge. It didn't really look like a pub at all. Without the banner and sign over the top, you would simply think it was a private residence. They were advertising food as well as ale. Perhaps it has a decent trade on the better weather days. ![]() There are still numerous properties in these locations, ripe for conversion. We notice several being worked on (photographs later) during our travels. The 'Old Barn' above, would make a spectacular home. Beautiful building, outstanding location. Whichever way you look. ![]() It's beauty untold. The houses in general throughout this particular area, are very well presented. A nice pair of semi-detached here with a large detached alongside. ![]() Nothing gaudy about the structure and the roof tiles are sensible. I hate to see the coloured roof tiles spoiling the landscapes in these locations especially red. I was wondering about the garden wall on the first semi though. Then I thought perhaps an original natural stone wall had been knocked down by one or two speed merchants being on the bend. Being rebuilt and given a coat of white paint, might have been a better solution than erecting a girder type steel barrier. ![]() Actually, I gave the road some thought, it was quite a steep and winding route. Be a bugger going out of control there on snow and ice. Last edited by Mathos : 09-07-2009 at 04:35 PM. Reason: Missed out photograph for Semi-detached and detached properties.

Had a busy few days of late. Lunchtime today though, Flobo and myself had a walk into the village to watch the Truck Festival. It's a two day event, with Bus displays, Wagons, Farm Vehicles, Steam Vehicles, Cars and Vans. They had Brass Bands in the procession and more besides, it was nice. ![]() Nice weather too so that made it a good day. ![]() I well remember the old Charabanc. Didn't We Have a beautiful day The day we went to Bangor. ![]() Another one here. ![]() This one almost got away. Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way and all for under a pound you know But on the way back I cuddled with Jack and we opened a bottle of cider Singing a few of our favourite songs as the wheels went around Do you recall the thrill of it all as we walked along the sea grand Then on the sand we heard a brass band that played the Diddlely-Bump-Terrara Elsie and me had one cup of tea then we took a Paddler boat out Splashing away as we sat on the bay and the wheels went 'round Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way and all for under a pound you know But on the way back I cuddled with Jack and we opened a bottle of cider Singing a few of our favourite songs as the wheels went around Wasn't it nice, eating chocolate ice as we strolled around the fun-fair Then we ate eels in big ferris wheels as we sailed around the ground but then We had to be quick 'cause Elsie felt sick and we had to find somewhere to take her I said to her lad, what made her feel bad was the wheel going 'round Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way and all for under a pound you know But on the way back I cuddled with Jack and we opened a bottle of cider Singing a few of our favourite songs as the wheels went around Elsie and me, we finished our tea and said goodbye to the seaside Got on the bus, Flo said to us, oh isn't it a shame to go Wouldn't it be grand to have cash on demand and to live like this for always Oh it makes me feel ill, when I think of the mill and the wheels goin' 'round Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor A beautiful day we had lunch on the way And The Wheels Went round. ![]() It's quite amazing how well these vehicles are looked after.

The old hop on and off bus was a real kick in the teeth for to-days health and safety. ![]() At your own risk my son. ![]() But some folk just couldn't read. ![]() Nice machines though. ![]() Nice example above. ![]() A floating band here. The music was really good. There was one of those hurdy-gurdy type organs on a truck, but I don't appear to have taken a photograph of it. Hey Up. ![]() I did. No show without Punch either. ![]() The Yanks turned up. ![]() Nice Studebaker as well. ![]() Check the Timber Spokes on the wheels. ![]() A little more information. The Yanks love that don't they. ![]() I said to him, that's not a Texan accent or Mid-West whining drawl, it sounds more like Bolton to me. "Nay lad," he replied "Westhoughton" ![]() ![]() Nice Charabanc that though.

Look at this. ![]() The Pope Mobile. ![]() The Pope didn't turn up though. This was a beautiful specimen ![]() From the front. ![]() Outstanding workmanship. ![]() True British Craftsmen. ![]() Thames Trader Flat. Seeing that took me back. I drove Tippers for a while on the construction of The M6. Repaired them as well. They were a brilliant 'work-horse' ![]() There was a brilliant selection on show. ![]() RAF. Good on you lads. ![]() Some very sturdy trucks. ![]() A Leyland Comet. All sorts of information here and there. ![]() The owners obviously thought a great deal of these vehicles. ![]() Every credit to them as well. ![]() They were all immaculate. ![]() Well, nearly all of them. The above was a special. He had put a lot of work into building the same. Different. ![]() Big Yankee Mac recovery vehicle. Nice machine.

Meandering somewhat here, but I received a decent End of Catalogue Promotion earlier today. Knowing how several of you lads are into these interesting bits and pieces I thought I'd stick a few pages on the thread for the benefit of your interest. ![]() There are some decent bargains. ![]() Handy with regards to the use of LPG. ![]() Just as a point of interest, is there any natural gas supplied in LOS? ![]() The Hitachi Mains Drill looks a good buy at Ł52..50. Quality goods at knock down prices. ![]() A couple of more pages yet. ![]() A couple of decent pumps above. ![]() I'm not on commission either.

TSR2 called yesterday, we had a meal out last night. Took a drive to The Inn at Whitewell. Exceptionally nice place. TSR is a grand bloke, one of the lads. He's returning to LOS on Wednesday. ![]() I had a sardine salad, because I'm on my diet. TSR2 and Flobo had a big plate of battered fish with big chips and mushy peas each. ![]()

Took my younger daughter, her husband and two boys to Manchester Airport last week. ![]() They went off to Dubai. The flight had been changed from one Terminal to another, so we used the inter connecting walkway. ![]() The Airport in general is very beautiful and spotless clean. ![]() There weren't so many people on the inter connecting route though. ![]() It's quite amazing how 'Ringway' as it used to be called has grown and developed over the years. I remember it as a large white building with a chain link fence round it and one runway, when I was a kid. We used to cycle there every once in a while to see if there were any planes coming in or out. ![]() It's like a City in it's own rights now. Spectacular place. ![]() Very beautiful. ![]() There are three Terminals at present, all very state of the art modern. Apparently two more Terminals are in the planning pipeline. Great for employment benefits. We gave the Motorway's a miss for the drive home, going via Cheadle and Stretford. Nicer. ![]() A nicer drive. We stopped at The Griffin (Cheadle) for a sandwich lunch. Flobo had Roast Turkey on white with stuffing and a small salad with a few chips. ![]() The obligatory Cranberry Sauce as well. I settled for Cajun Chicken on brown with melted cheese dressing, a salad, chips came, but I left them. ![]() Nice pot of tea. Tasty. A good selection on offer. The main menu was enormous and had a very wide range of meals. The copies below were off the special deals. ![]() Nice selection as you can see. ![]() Good value for money as well.

So for a couple of days I have been mending and painting some decking plus associated railings at my daughters house. Plus valeting her car for her. ![]() I'm in the habit of doing these sort of jobs for both of them when they go on holiday. ![]() I like to see the finished product afterwards. ![]() The Engine compartment was a mess as well. ![]() Aren't they all though. ![]() Starting to come together. ![]() Slowly, but surely. ![]() It's getting better. ![]() Then I'll say to her, "Now keep it clean" ![]() "I do" will be the response. ![]() ![]() I forgot to take my camera up to her house. Never mind, if I call round in the next few days, I'll take a few photographs of the completed work.

Several really superb scenes today. Rather late at present though to start transferring. A few to keep the thread motivated though. ![]() A really outstandingly attractive home, farm and out buildings on a hillside. Not all that far from Manchester either. ![]() Canal locks are always interesting. The lady above certainly appeared to be familiar with opening and closing the same. ![]() Gently does it. ![]() Here comes Hubby and his follower. Note the Satellite Dish. Plus the maintenance guy's giving the locks a nice coat of white paint. ![]() It was a beautiful day. Most of The North west had rain today, we seemed to pass it by until we were on the last ten miles or so from home. ![]() Something about these two boats. They had this radiance of peace, tranquility and contentment. Looked rather cosy. Special. ![]() Both Flobo and myself noticed. ![]() Two specimens in more ways than one. ![]() Really looked good.

Winewall near Colne is a really cute village. ![]() It's quite a steep old climb going towards the tops at Trawden. ![]() Attractive looking. ![]() Nice looking pub in the village centre. The Cotton Tree. It's quite famous for it's Inghamite Chapel started in 1752. It was the second largest such Chapel out of 16, in 1814. It boasted 41 members, some so fired up with enthusiasm they emigrated to Ontario in Canada to form a branch known as Farringdon Independent Church. However, by 1988 the congregation had become so small that the chapel was forced to close. There are now only two Inghamite Chapels left in the world, one at Wheatley Lane and the other at Salterforth. Interesting link here as well with regards to Benjamin Ingham, the founder of this religious branch. Nice attractive village. ![]() I don't know the purpose of the rods sticking out of the building though. Happyman?

Some outstanding countryside in the region. ![]() Attractive, peaceful and inviting. ![]() Some very high points. If you look very carefully at the above photograph, there's a cyclist pedalling up towards the top of the far hill on the high road. Amazing views. ![]() You'd definitely need a 4WD on these roads in the winter though. ![]() The Landrover appreciation societies abound throughout these regions.
