I have heard before that some guys are given grief when returning to Thailand because they don't have a return ticket.
Also do we need proof of travel insurance to enter?

Grief would come when checking in with airline to fly there. They would only insist on a ticket out at Thai immigration if they didn't want you to enter. Either coz you had made too many entries or had an unpopular passport.
No need of proof on travel insurance. If you have a credit card you may get some insurance with that company.
My concern is more about the airline check in on the return flight. As i said I have heard stories of guy being hassled because they are flying back to Thailand on the return leg of their flight.
Depends on the visa you have, a tourist visa might elicit some further questions from check in staff, a retirement or marriage visa should not.
Showing a passport jam packed with Thai immigration stamps, signatures, TMcards , 90 day report slips, proof of address attachments, dates and all the other assorted officialese so beloved of the Thai is more than enough to confuse and fluster them at a UK check in desk and coupled with the equally long winded and confusing explanation you give them of what all the stamps and dates mean, they eventually just give up and rather than die of boredom they will gladly check you in.
After all, there are another 100 people behind you and the staff just want to get it all done quickly.
I had this problem once. I just showed them my 12 month extension/visa and my 're-entry permit'.Originally Posted by VocalNeal
Like Taxexile said, it depends on your visa and passport (=nationality). I have read (I think some thread here or or TV) that they ask to show some 20k or 40k cash from Indians or Russians or Nigerians or such people to prove they are able to pay for their stay in the country. Which is perfectly legit way to handle them IMHO. Coming from rich western country I've never been asked for such, or any insurance (but it is good to have insurance anyways, but when you think you get insurance when paying with credit card just check the small print what it actually covers and for how long.
I've never had any problems with one year non imm multi entry. One time I didn't have that, just arriving from Phnom Penh without any visa (reason too complicated and unrelated to go into here). This was after the Junta took power and they tightened the rules. It was only time in 10 years I have been asked to show departure ticket from Thailand. Which I happened to have to RichFarangLand in my telephone. Anyway, the female officer was friendly and I don't believe entry would have been denied even if I didn't have the paperwork (on telephone) In case of denied entry I would have needed to see the superior officer and explain a bit about my status and mention some names.
I always go to queue where there is a female officer... they are nicer, and nicer to look at and, well it's the hormones or something (yeah not very academic opinion...) I also feel they do the job and process you faster and more efficiently than Thai males.
Same reason I prefer Air Asia... the hostesses
Just to bring happiness to people...
If the person on the desk says no entry you are allowed to speak to the officer in charge. I have been refused entry a few times at land borders but when I have spoken to the O.IC. I have been allowed in.
When I fly to Thailand from Korea that is my return flight. The problem is that the airline is liable to fly you out of Thailand if you are refused entry. While I was inbetween visas Korean Air would simply make me sign a disclaimer to say that I must pay my own departure in such circumstances.
Last month I was visiting a friend in KL for a few days and we came back to Thailand in his car. I was refused entry at the border as I had 6 visa exemptions within a year. Computer said no, no chance, end of. So I got a taxi to Penang, got a tourist visa, back to Songkhla, got my paperwork together, back to Penang and got my NON-O.
What a fuck about, all I had with me was a 2 days worth of laundry.
Lang may yer lum reek...
If you are travelling with a tourist visa they may ask you to show 20k baht in cash. If you're at a land border they will let you go through to the ATM and come back for your stamp.
As I said, this depends on your nationality. In 10 years I have never been asked to show money. Should that happen I would show gold or platinum card and say "This can buy new car" and I think what would be end of. Not waste time to find ATM.
These days I believe many banks have mobile apps where you can see your statement and show that too.

If you are worried about it jump on the Net and book the cheapest flight out of Thailand so you have an out flight.
AirAsia fly Bangkok to Cambodia for piss all. Just buy a cheap flight somewhere.
Just write the ticket off. It's nothing.
You're correct. Not only flying to Thailand, I had recently a similar problem flying to Hong Kong on a one way ticket.
That's the reason. It's the airline responsibility to check you have the proper documents to enter the country where you're going and that may include a return ticket.
The things we regret most is the things we didn't do
True, but at least it says you have been someone... and they are not going to call bank or credit card company to check and on average ones with gold are gold, and when individual officer makes immediate decision...Originally Posted by Horatio Hornblower
I hope your exit strategy is better than your entry one.
My post was not about airline, but Thai immigration. I have never been asked about visas by airline from any country nearby , but sometimes from faraway countries with strict rules like Japan, need show either visa or outbound flight within 30 days. Due to airline's responsibility take passanger back to where he/she came from if entry is denied.. but you can book any promo flight out from Thailand while on check-in desk with airasia app....
When I arrived at the border it was not the individual officer's decision at all.
Computer said no, big red line said too many visa exemptions.
I went in to the office and spoke to the chief, asking for just one day (3 hours even) to get home and get my documents together for my marriage visa and he said it was impossible.
My friend's wife, who were both there, knew the Chief's predecessor of only a few months and gave him a call. He called the new guy but there was literally nothing that could be done. Computer said no, go to Penang.
I feel sorry for your troubles. This isn't the easiest place to live in for a foreigner.
