How do I get rid of this?

Like most others in LOS my XP is not genuine.
Microsoft have sussed this out an planted a bluddy thing on my Desktop telling me so.

Can I get rid of it without buying a genuine XP from them?

Yes, install Ubuntu (thought I'd get in before CMN)

Try using a different dodgy serial number.

I've pm'd him the location of a file you can run that gets rid of it and still allows you to run windows update. When you run windows update make sure you do not download the genuine advantage notification file, in fact disable it from future downloads. Turn off automatic updates and do it manually as well.

I'll pm the url to anyone else that wants it.

Download XP student release, which is intended for loading onto several computers so the serial is accepted for updates. Where are you?
