    CAPTCHA

A CAPTCHA ( /ˈkęp.ə/) is a type of challenge-response test used in computing as an attempt to ensure that the response is generated by a human being.

The process usually involves a computer asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to grade.

These tests are designed to be easy for a computer to generate but difficult for a computer to solve.

If a correct solution is received, it can be presumed to have been entered by a human.

A common type of CAPTCHA requires the user to type letters and/or digits from a distorted image that appears on the screen.

Such tests are commonly used to prevent unwanted internet bots from accessing websites.

time for TD to invest in the technology ...............

    and

Since 2009, CAPTCHA advertising has become much more prevalent. Publishers like AOL, Meredith Corporation,[6] and Internet Brands [7] have adopted the option as an additional revenue stream. Users typically type in brand messages instead of distorted text.[8] Leaders in the space are Solve Media, AdsCaptcha, and NuCAPTCHA, among others.[9]

which should please your hip pocket DD

Yeah I was also wondering how so much spam makes it through. I guess the bots have become a lot more advanced.

The only tested sites where CAPTCHAs couldn't be broken were Google and reCAPTCHA. The latter is an implementation originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University and bought by the Internet search giant in September 2009.

^ The last few sites I have signed up to aren't even using the captchas like the one above any more. They have a small window that pops up and asks you a question or to perform a task. For example -

Apparently a lot more effective than the straight 'repeat the letters' captchas.

    Here's some home work DD

How To Stop Forum Spam – Anti Spam Systems : Nifty-Stuff.com

Reports, Great Members, Excellent Moderators - This final stop-gap is about 100% effective! It takes our members about 1.4 seconds to start reporting spammy posts. Not long thereafter one of our amazing moderators deletes and bans the account. (Side note: Our members are so good at reporting that we sometimes get hundreds of reports at once. Because of this we ended up installing a modification that hides reported posts after multiple people report it. HUGE time saver!)

and perhaps it is time to loosen the reigns with some of your senior mods and allow them to ban accounts , even if time limited untill you can review the decisions because it is obvious that just having the power to delete the spam is a losing battle

    Take a rest Mid!

Maybe you should fire up your own FREE Thai based vbulletin forum so people can abuse you over ever little thing. Spam is and always will be. The Bots target high traffic sites and this happens to be one of those.

I am with you on that as I can't read them either. And what the heck is that about digitizing books? How is that possible?

Your delusional. I am only giving you a hard time.

I do not see how spam makes any money in the first place. Does anyone every buy from a spammer? It is deleted almost immediately. So do they make any money? It seems a waste of time on their part.

In reality is less than 25%, even if I turn on the sound. Has cost me some good deals, so I hate those things. Right up there with. Press 1 to talk to Press 2 to talk to, and on and on and on it goes. I am a right old fart.

thing is AO and others , since you are already proven human members there would be no reason for you to come into contact with a CAPTCHA or other method of weeding out the spam .

Sure there is. Do you think TD is the only forum I have ever joined?

Many sites have that as a search function spam fighter. A lot of government sites for real estate property searches have captcha. I probably enter 1 or more silly strings of letters a day.
