| A soiree in Nong Khai It was years ago now but looking through my pics I can now remember it like it was yesterday. My galfriend and I decided to get the overnight train from Bangers up to Nong Khai to have an explore of northern Thailand. I have always considered train travel in Thailand to be a fantastic way to get around the country and I was really impressed by this particular journey. The food in the buffet car was excellent which was quite a surprise and certainly a far cry from what is offered on British Rail. During our journey a monk was arrested for drinking alcohol in public which was a bit embarrassing as it was me he was drinking with and me who kept topping up his glass. He was an interesting chap and spoke half decent English but alas he was breaking the law and bringing the monkhood into disrepute. Anyway we all got questioned about what had happened and for a while there I thought that I was going to be in trouble too. Happily I managed to befriend the young policeman and we ended up becoming great mates. He became an honorary Ozzie and I became an honorary Thai policeman. Anyway, the next morning we pulled into Nong Khai station and made our way to our guesthouse. The guest house is called Mutt Mee GH and I highly recommend it as it is owned and run by an English guy and his Thai wife and they really had done a great job of making the place comfortable. Here is a lousy pic of the building that we stayed in. Set on an enormous plot of land right beside the Mehkong River, the gardens had loads of seats/chairs made out of inverted car tyres which were extrordinarily comfortable. We stayed at the guest house and just relaxed for a few days before hiring a motorcycle and heading off to to explore the surrounding countryside. It was a great opportunity to do a few domestics. Here is a pic of me doing a bit of washing. I only offered coz I still didnt know what size bra she wore, although I knew they were of an adequate size I just had to know. Nong Khai was the first place that I ever saw the Asian sun. I mean the optical illusion of the sun being a huge orange orb in the sky. I havent got a pic but I can tell you that it is awesome when you see it. It was my birthday so my galfiend treated me to first class meal at the Nong Khai Hilton. She even had a cake delivered to the hotel ahead of time as a nice surprise as well. The next day we set off on a small motorcycle to take in the sights. TBC

One of the strangest places that we ever went to in all of Thailand is a park that some crazy falang had spent many years making giant cement statues. It is called Salakewoo and I cant for the life of me understand what would ossess someone to spend some 15 years making all these statues. Here are some pics.

I spent a night in Nong Khai a couple of years ago - just in a guest house by the river - spent a night in a couple of bars down there - good fun - a few oldish expats and some local lasses.

Not far from there is Prasat Muang Singh which is an ancient Khymer temple. It is fokking huge and almost as big as a n entire town. Here is a pic of one of the huge temple like thingies that are everywhere at Prasat Muang Singh. Strangely, that door behaind me leads into a very small room where we managed to have some adult fun. My galfriend then felt guilty coz she considered that we had commited sacrilage. I told not to be so silly as it was just a root fer fok sake.

Another scenic spot we discovered on our travels was Phra Sadej cliff which offers a view of the countryside for miles around. This pic just doesnt do it justice as it is one of those vista's that you just cant take all of it in.

Again, I have to apologise for the poor quality of this pic but these are stairs that the monks had carved out that lead up to a strange little tower that overlooks the valley called Usas Tower. It is located at Ban Phu Phu Phra Baat. Try saying that when your pissed.

If you are travelling to Nong Khai and thinking about where you might stay I can highly recommend Mut Mee Guest House. They have a website so you can check it out ahead of time. Go to http://www.mutmee.net/ and have a look for youself. Julian and Pao run the gaff and you will certainly be made to feel welcome.

I actually just came back from Nong Khai. Only spent about 5 hours there on my way back from Laos, but visiting that town made me want to see a whole lot more of Isaan. And looking at those pics......I think I missed out on seeing a lot! (of course, I only had 5 hours)

Good report Captain, I like Durian fan, spent only a couple of hours in transit from Laos. would certainly like to see more of it. Isn't Nong khai the place where all the fireballs come out of the Mekhong every year?
