    Web definition of liberal:
open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.

"they have more liberal views toward marriage and divorce than some people"
I've been a liberal all of my adult life, according to that definition. Early in my adult life my views were definitely hippie which could have been described as apathetic at best and anarchist at worst, when it came to politics. But in my 30s, I went to university and was profound influenced by the academic atmosphere; it seemed to be an utopia of freedom and intellectual growth. But, of course, the school's mission is to prepare students to make a living within society. Well, that was one big conviction shot to hell. But I also learned in college I love computers, software and especially the internet which I don't hesitate to call a global "commune" and, thus, the largest commune in the world. Who knows? Maybe from that kind of start, the real thing cojuld hsppen.

So I actually believe it's perfectly natural to compromise some of your ideals even if you have no better reason than convenience.

So throughout my 30s, 40s. and 50s. I continued to rationalize changes in my philosophy (without cutting my pony tail, BTW) and to this day I don't know why. For example, I used to be convinced of the need of a another U.S. civil war but now believe the 1776 revolution was a good war and was the only civil war the U.S.A. will ever need.
“The Master said, At fifty, I knew what were the biddings of Heaven. At sixty, I heard them with docile ear. At seventy, I could follow the dictates of my own heart; for what I desired no longer overstepped the boundaries of right.”

"Like Karl Marx, many people in political leadership positions today have adopted the attitude that it is necessary to force their ideas on the people who they think are simply not smart enough to understand what is “good” for them. This migration away from personal freedom and toward government dominance started long before the current administration took power. The effects are now blatantly obvious even to those who have been asleep at the wheel for decades " - Dr. Ben Carson

    Life is short
The World is a mere dream to the idle
Only the fool fears death for what is there of life does not die once sooner or later
Man has to die once and once only
He should make his death glorious

In his chamber, weak and dying,
    While the Norman Baron lay,
Loud without, his men were crying,
    "Shorter hours and better pay".

And gentlemen in England, now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.
