    Pick Pocketed at Pantip Plaza

I got pick pocketed yesterday at Pantip Plaza!

It was pretty clever and I didn't notice until I was reaching for my money in the cab.

I normally keep my small change(20's,100's and one 500 ) in my left trouser pocket.

I'd just bought a new battery for my laptop on the third floor. I diligently bargained the guy down from 2600 to 1600 baht, it took nearly 10 minutes. And I know I still over paid.
Anyway I slowly make my way out looking at netbook computers on the way out.

On the escalator down the the second floor very close to the bottom a lady in front of me drops some fliers on the escalator and begins to frantically pick them up. The lady behind her steps backwards into me and as the bottom of the escalator arrives there is a brief pileup. My focus was 100% on getting through the pile up.
Someone behind me must have slipped into my pocket during the brief meelee at the bottom of the escalator.

First time I'd been pick pocketed. I reckon they got 1200-1500 baht. Fortunately they didn't go for my zippered pocket where I had 12k baht. I probably would have noticed that.

With the economy on the skids I reckon petty crime will be on the rise.
    Watch out!

I have a friend who almost was pickpocketed on an escalator to one of the subways in BKK. In some places crowds form around those things and you are boxed in.

Bummer. Is that an indication we should take the stairs?

Sounds like they were all in on it, the flier dropper, the woman behind her and the pickpocket.

I've read a few reports of the elevator trick this past year.

Lots of copper wire thefts too, recently round Bangkok.
Mongrels stole the phone cable into town up in Issan. I had to wait 2 weeks for it to be replaced. The phone guy said it took out 6,500 phones. Still not as bad as that humungous transformer they stole from Det Udom a couple of years ago.

The internet cable connection outside the local moo baan tends to disappear every weekend round 3 o'clock am, our place.
We suspect its the same guy who comes to replace it in a TOT van every Monday morning..

Seriously. Is crime on the rise?
I have a friend that got her bag snatched on Silom a few months back, but apart from that it seems business as usual.
As the OP stated. Stealth is still the weapon of choice, but do you think violent crime is on the up?

We live in an Issan town on a main highway. Businesses have been warned about an increase in thefts over the past few weeks. Thieves breaking in through the roof in the early hours seems to be the preferred method of entry.

Police still looking for power transformer

Ubon Ratchathani: -- Police are hoping to narrow down their search for a 12-tonne power transformer stolen in Det Udom district a month ago today. Police suspect some of the power agency's staff were involved in the theft.

The four-million-baht Step-Up AVR (automatic voltage regulator) transformer with a power of 20 kilovolts was taken from its location adjacent to a sawmill, about 100 metres from a power plant office in the district on April 6.

I saw a guy get stabbed in Panthip Plaza and was bleeding to death on the pavement outside until a tuk-tuk took him away.

It has been spiralling out of control since the Democrats took over.

Wife had her bag slashed and purse stolen last week at Future Park. Luckily, the thief took the cash (250 baht) and dumped the credit/atm cards, along with the purse. So at least we got something back.

I've noticed an increase in Glitterman posts over the past few weeks.

That's got to be some sort of crime.

I got my blackberry nicked in the Tukcom centre at Pattaya a couple of years ago - as documented here on TD.

The theft wasnt a big deal as my company at the time replaced it with a nice new model.

The worst part was the rumour going around that it had been nicked by a ladyboy from my hotel room.

    Beware of using a backpack/rucksack.

Don't sling it on your back with valuables in it.

I was in Shenzhen waiting to cross a road, and felt a tiny bump from behind. Turned my head to see some guy who - in that brief moment, perhaps one to two seconds - had already unzipped my backpack and had his arm down inside as far as his elbow !!
