Whether true or not. Plastering ones vehicle with stickers or having a license plate claiming the owner is vet or has a purple heart is OTT.

Most folks who are vets or have been wounded don't feel the need to advertise their heroic military career. They just get on with life without fanfare or much discussion on the matter.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

That has also been my experience when meeting people who have served in the armed forces.

Unlike most posters here, I am an American combat veteran, and know many, many holders of Purple Hearts, including several family members. Regarding EN's license plate post, I cannot IMAGINE anyone I know with a Purple Heart EVER having one of those plates on their car. I have trouble even grasping the concept, and all that I can come up with is maybe in some of these states, especially those with large military installations and numerous service families, they get their plates for free. I know very few of my friends who even speak of their wounds, and when they do it is usually only with close friends who are also veterans, and after numerous alcoholic beverages. We used to call them 'FTD' (Forgot to Duck) medals. What they were good for in WWII was to get you additional points for each Purple Heart which counted towards the total number of points needed to rotate home. They were also useful after the Vietnam War in that they got you extra points if you were applying for a civil service job after getting out of the military. The plates are way over the top. Maybe it's just me. I also find thousands of American flags stuck all over any flat surface in some way extremely offensive.

After my brother got his third Purple Heart for his third wound in eight months (two serious, one not as bad - the first one took almost 900 sutures to close up), he said the reaction in his Platoon was really amusing. He said the Platoon referred to him as Lt. Magnet Ass, and about half tried to stay as far away from him in the field as they could, while the other half tried to stay as close as possible, figuring that anything passing by would automatically be drawn directly to him. That was another good thing about Purple Hearts, at least in Vietnam; if you got two of them (I think it was three in the Marines since they always have to be bigger bad-asses), you got out of the field and a job in the rear with the gear (unless, like my brother, you turned it down). I also should caveat all of my comments as meaning no disrespect to families who have had loved ones killed in action, and have the Purple Heart awarded at the time of their death in a place of honor in the home.

License plates like these, and the flag in every window, flag lapel-pins, bumper stickers . . . one thing that does bother me about many Americans is their overt and in-your-face nationalism. The naivete is palpable and actually, in my opinion, does a dis-service to many.

Why does one need a flag in one's window when you're at home? Pledging allegiance to the flag? Right out of communist and fascist dogma.

    Such contradictions

Like telling the world that you were in the armed forces and were wounded: And?

Similar to "Baby on board" sticker in your rear window. Respect from other parents ? Give over. I've served with people that were injured, but they never highlighted the fact.
