    The Purple Heart

I have no idea what the equivalent might be in your country but in America it's a merit award given to the injured military servicemen/women in the line of duty.

Today I saw a car with the numberplate proudly displaying the fact the driver was awarded The Purple Heart. I git to thinking .. what's more honorable, the get shot or not get shot? You don't even have to be shot or wounded by shrapnel, I know a guy who sliced his hand on some barbed wire and was awarded The Purple Heart.

In some scenarios, and with a little stretch of the imagination, we can assume many of the wounded were rendered so by way of their own stupidity. Then we can also assume a number of servicemen were clever enough not to be wounded. Is there a service medal awarded to the good duckers and good coverers and those who had the sense not to stick their heads up when the billets were flying by? Or those quick enough to get into the foxhole?

Do you get a purple heart for shell shock? What about post traumatic stress disorder? Venereal disease? I wouldn't be shouting it out loud.

The Victoria Cross is the highest honor for British and Commonwealth troops and it is awarded for 'valor in the face of the enemy' that means being a hero when the shit is hitting the fan, having to storm bunkers the old fashioned way, because we can't afford airstrikes and tactical nukes, that sort of thing.

The George Cross is for 'valor not in the face of the enemy' and can also be awarded to civillians, it's for courageous acts in dangerous circumstance, like disarming bombs or rescuing people from burning buildings.

I don't think we have a medal for cutting your hand open on barbed wire..

It's a travesty of the medal if troops are awarded the Purple Heart for a scratch, which I would say you added to denegrate military honours. You noted previously that you served and saw action with the US military, camel. For shame then that you of all people would not know the reasons for its award. I see a little lie unravelling.

The Purple Heart is awarded to a soldier for his/her first wound in battle. Thereafter, an oak cluster is added. It is also awarded to the family of any soldier KIA. I have custodianship of my cousin's medals, one of which is a Purple Heart.

Because the boo-rah wingnut chickenhawks would never denigrate a military honour right?

Interestingly, the Victoria cross is made out of bronze from Russian cannons that were captured in the Crimean War (charge of the light brigade an' all that).

    Quite interesting.

Purple Heart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enemy-related injuries which justify the award of the Purple Heart include injury caused by enemy bullet, shrapnel, or other projectile created by enemy action; injury caused by enemy placed land mine, naval mine, or trap; injury caused by enemy released chemical, biological, or nuclear agent; injury caused by vehicle or aircraft accident resulting from enemy fire; concussion injuries caused as a result of enemy generated explosions.
Injuries or wounds which do not qualify for award of the Purple Heart include frostbite or trench foot injuries; heat stroke; food poisoning not caused by enemy agents; chemical, biological, or nuclear agents not released by the enemy; battle fatigue; disease not directly caused by enemy agents; accidents, to include explosive, aircraft, vehicular, and other accidental wounding not related to or caused by enemy action; self-inflicted wounds (e.g., a soldier accidentally fires their own gun and the bullet strikes their leg), except when in the heat of battle, and not involving gross negligence; post-traumatic stress disorders;[5] and jump injuries not caused by enemy action.

    ^ True. Also:

While clearly an individual decoration, the Purple Heart differs from all other decorations in that an individual is not "recommended" for the decoration; rather he or she is entitled to it upon meeting specific criteria.

    Purple Heart

It's possible some cheaters like those Camel knows received the award for a scratch; unlikely, but sh*t happens. The soldier's unit would know and the guy/gal would be shunned.

    sliced his hand
This to Wet Organ is a
    scratch
So if the enemy fires on you and your Hummer swerves and crashes slicing the hand of a soldier, he is awarded the medal. This guy is not:

frostbite or trench foot injuries; heat stroke; food poisoning not caused by enemy agents; chemical, biological, or nuclear agents not released by the enemy; battle fatigue; disease not directly caused by enemy agents; accidents, to include explosive, aircraft, vehicular, and other accidental wounding not related to or caused by enemy action; self-inflicted wounds (e.g., a soldier accidentally fires their own gun and the bullet strikes their leg), except when in the heat of battle, and not involving gross negligence; post-traumatic stress disorders;[5] and jump injuries not caused by enemy action.
    What is this guy's award?

You've served in the military then, I assume.

Otherwise I doubt you can really assert that.

    Please qualify.

Perhaps the guy sliced his hand open while removing enemy placed razor wire. If it was placed by the enemy, then that would qualify him for the Purple Heart, I would presume.

Why not? Or if a shot was fired and he ducked into the wire.

And trench foot and frost bite, isn't it enemy action that keeps soldiers in trenches and on frozen ground?

You said you served; don't you know?
Check the link I provided, JJ. There's your proof for award of the Purple Heart.
How do I know that cheaters are shunned? Mil pals. Like some others on this board, I don't pretend to have served in the military.

Whom on the board have pretended to serve? How should we prove we did? And more importantly .. why would we? Is complying to your accusations something that should be a priority to we the lowly?
