I have no idea what the equivalent might be in your country but in America it's a merit award given to the injured military servicemen/women in the line of duty.

Today I saw a car with the numberplate proudly displaying the fact the driver was awarded The Purple Heart. I git to thinking .. what's more honorable, the get shot or not get shot? You don't even have to be shot or wounded by shrapnel, I know a guy who sliced his hand on some barbed wire and was awarded The Purple Heart.

In some scenarios, and with a little stretch of the imagination, we can assume many of the wounded were rendered so by way of their own stupidity. Then we can also assume a number of servicemen were clever enough not to be wounded. Is there a service medal awarded to the good duckers and good coverers and those who had the sense not to stick their heads up when the billets were flying by? Or those quick enough to get into the foxhole?

The Victoria Cross is the highest honor for British and Commonwealth troops and it is awarded for 'valor in the face of the enemy' that means being a hero when the shit is hitting the fan, having to storm bunkers the old fashioned way, because we can't afford airstrikes and tactical nukes, that sort of thing.

The George Cross is for 'valor not in the face of the enemy' and can also be awarded to civillians, it's for courageous acts in dangerous circumstance, like disarming bombs or rescuing people from burning buildings.

It's a travesty of the medal if troops are awarded the Purple Heart for a scratch, which I would say you added to denegrate military honours. You noted previously that you served and saw action with the US military, camel. For shame then that you of all people would not know the reasons for its award. I see a little lie unravelling.

The Purple Heart is awarded to a soldier for his/her first wound in battle. Thereafter, an oak cluster is added. It is also awarded to the family of any soldier KIA. I have custodianship of my cousin's medals, one of which is a Purple Heart.

Interestingly, the Victoria cross is made out of bronze from Russian cannons that were captured in the Crimean War (charge of the light brigade an' all that).

Perhaps the guy sliced his hand open while removing enemy placed razor wire. If it was placed by the enemy, then that would qualify him for the Purple Heart, I would presume.
