Americans slagging off BP are w*nkers

So, the yanks have been building millions of gas-guzzling monsters for decades without giving a shit about the effect on the environment or world oil reserves.

So, the yanks let BP do the highly risky work of getting the massive amounts of oil they are addicted to out of their nearby seas rather than doing it themselves.

And now following an accident, they are entirely free of blame and simply pass the buck to BP?

    Tossers.

The US media are certainly acting like a bunch of Tossers.
All this bullshit over a frikkin Saturday Yacht race ffs.
But nary a word of acknowledgement or appreciation for the fact that BP has voluntarily committed to a $20bn slush fund to compensate the victims (real or imagined) of this disaster. Less than two months after the event.
Now BP may be British, but it is the largest domestic oil producer in the US, thanks to it's takeover of Amoco in 1998.
Yep, Amoco- an acronym for 'American Oil Company'. Well goddamn, if we're gonna buy an American oil company, lets learn from them -

Amoco Cadiz was a very large crude carrier (VLCC), owned by Amoco, that split in two after running aground on Portsall Rocks, 5 km (3.1 mi) from the coast of Brittany, France, on 16 March 1978, resulting in the largest oil spill of its kind in history to that date.

....At the time, Amoco Cadiz incident resulted in the largest loss of marine life ever recorded from an oil spill. Mortalities of most animals occurred over the two months following the spill. Two weeks following the accident, millions of dead mollusks, sea urchins, and other bottom dwelling organisms washed ashore.
Diving birds constituted the majority of the nearly 20,000 dead birds that were recovered. The oyster mortality from the spill was estimated at 9,000 tons. Fishermen in the area caught fish with skin ulcerations and tumors.

    Legal claims

In 1978, it was estimated to have caused US$250 million in damage to fisheries and tourist amenities. The French government presented claims totalling US$2 billion to United States courts.
In subsequent legal proceedings in Chicago, United States, the owners of the tug were held to have been completely blameless while France was awarded US$120 million from the American oil company Amoco in 1990.

Amoco Cadiz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yep, twelve year delay in paying out an amount of less than half the actual damage caused. Bladdy amateurs- Exxon managed to hang on for 19 years without paying a dime to it's victims, after Valdez.

Heck, BP bought the bladdy American Oil Company- so surely it is entitled to do things the 'American way'.

BP messed big time by not having an effective oil spill recovery plan, and not implementing proper saftey precautions. No dispute there.

Nobody does at that depth- and there are plenty of wells out there that are even deeper.

Thats where the regulators and the Oil companies got it wrong big time, Imo.

Wait for the first catastrophe to happen, and then play catch up with the technology. Real smart.

What they did have was an effective legal defense plan in place. At least for a while. I think the mistake a lot of us make is in thinking this oil was for America. It wasn't. The US leased the rights to drilling, under provisions. Correct me with a link to anywhere but FOX if I'm wrong.

That's the way it always works. From the space shuttle to deepwater drilling. You want stuff made from oil? Plastics, jet fuel etc? Gotta drill for oil in deeper waters.

This is funny. You blame the US consumption, and no thought to blind corporate greed and profit taking.

Interesting -- you have a calling for not just betting on the wrong horse, but effectively defending the proverbial 'evildoers' in almost all cases. That's fascinating.

So, you actually believe that BP will not find a way to 'recover' those $20 billion within 6 months, by raising the price of oil, or oil products, and passing the cost on to the global consumers? You continued naïveté never ceases to amaze me.

BP has *not* voluntarily committed anything -- they only 'volunteered' the $20 billion after the US government had a 'come to Jesus' talk with them, and would have continued doing absolutely nothing, otherwise.

Also, none of the slush fund money has been allocated to any victims yet, except to pay for BP's own staff engaged in the cleanup effort.

Wow, you certainly are quite unique in your way to continuously distort the facts to fit your own fantasy world...

(Oh, by the way - got an answer to those questions and supporting evidence, I keep asking for?)

Although BP's corporate headquarters are in London, their global Exploration and Production HQ is in Houston, and the overwhelming number of staff there are American, not British. I'm also 90% certain that BP's Drilling Management team for this particular well were also all American, and that there were few if any British personnel onboard the Deepwater Horizon at the time.

As regards their Oil Spill Management plans, BP's are as good as any that I've seen in the industry. I think there has to be acknowledgement that this wasn't a spill or accident, it was a catastrophe. Virtually all operators have very limited spill equipment within their operating area, usually only spraying equipment, dispersant fluids, and booms. For larger 'events', all operators that I know of outsource spill management to Companies for whom it's their speciality such as OSRL in Southampton. There is usually also 'pooling' of resources with an operating area with other companies on a 'mutual aid' basis.

Lot's of conjecture and rumours about the events that led to this disaster, but very few hard facts. Best for people to wait for the inquiry which will take place to get the truth, and where the blame lies. Meanwhile, the priority is to contain and stop the flow, and I don't believe that any other company, of any nationality, could make greater efforts to do so than BP are doing at the moment.

I,m particularly angry at President Obama for taking 5 mins out for a dump yesterday.
He should be concentrating his efforts and focusing more at fleacing BP as much as he can. How dare he go for a dump.
I bet BP feel that they are be robbed by a common street nigger.

If "BP" survive as a company it will be a miracle.

Not only is their CEO an idiot but shortcuts out on that rig put the entire company in jeopardy.
