Jeez Guesthouse, your barking up the wrong tree again.

Considering Bumungrad is one of the best hospitals in Thailand its only normal that Lonely planet is supporting them and why not.

The only thing one can have a whinge at is that they charge farang a premium for there service but as long as one receives the goods who really cares.

The answer is to make sure one is insured.

Anyway me old mate, hows life going on that boring old Thai visa ?

    Cheers Guesthouse.

    Love ya mate.

This subject has been raised before about deaths happening at Bumungrad but considering the amount of people that go through that hospital its to be expected that a doctor will fok up every now and then.

The same goes for every hospital in the world so that argument is a mute point, suppose one could never go to a hospital because they are scared the doctor might make a wrong decision, the answer is to stay at home and die anyway so its bullshit that Bumungrad is worse than other hospital.

The vast majority of people that have been treated in that brilliant hospital are well happy with the quality and level of service and at the end of the day even with the high prices its still far cheaper than hospitals in the West.

So what about Thailand, you still hate the place Guesthouse ?

Bumungrad charges three times the price for lasik eye surgery than any place in Chicago charges.

BTW Yantee Hospital has a double pricing system. My wife called about something and they came right and asked if she was calling on behalf of a farang or for herself. She asked why and they told her the price is much higher for farangs. She got her quote, called back a few weeks later on"behalf" of a farang and the price was 4 times higher.

That kind of gouging should get 'em business!

One cant argue that its right up there as far as a hospital goes especially to have all services available under the one roof. A most impressive hospital to front up at and I have had to go there once.

I'd have no problems bolting down there if I ever had the miss fortune of falling seriously Ill in Thailand.

I agree with Twerry, Bumrungrad is a great hospital, a little production line(ish) but still a damn good hospital.

I read that BGH is better but both are tops in service and price, very popular with the oil sheiks.

Had a bad experience with BGH last night, but with the billing department, not the docs and nurses, although the surgeon took a long time showing up to stitch up my son. We requested a plastic surgeon (deep cut just under his nose- that's the last time I let him play with my machete) (kidding), and afterward found out he was an oral surgeon, which kind of pissed me off, but it looks like an OK job. At any rate, the billing department tried to make us pay the full bill saying our insurance (BUPA) didn't cover anything, which is not true- after I protested, vehemently but without bad language or pulling the twit over the counter and pummeling him, they cut the bill in half, still saying there was no reason to contact BUPA. Very weird. By the way, BUPA is valid at that hospital, used it there several times before when my son was admitted for bronchitis.

I think I am going to avoid the "for profit" joints like BGH and Bum from now on, don't really think they are a great value. Went there because it is near and I was worried about possible disfigurement if the stitching was done poorly (my son looks fine today, not worried), but while the docs and nurses were fine there was nothing particularly special about the care or worth the extra cost over what we would have been charged at BKK Christian, Police, or similar. I also chose that place because it is fairly close to home, but as it turned out there was no particular rush- they gave my son chloral hydrate in attempt to knock him out before the stitching, but an hour after administration he was still going wild in the wheelchair and was awake throughout the procedure. Apparently my son is impervious to the old Mickey Finn, maybe I should have named him "Rasputin."

Danger, Stem Cell Tourists: Patient in Thailand
    Dies From Treatment

A woman with kidney disease has died after receiving an experimental stem cell treatment at a private clinic in Thailand, and a postmortem examination of her kidneys revealed that the treatment was almost certainly responsible for her death. Last week we reported that Costa Rica’s health ministry had closed a stem cell clinic that catered to foreigners, which sparked lively debates around the Internet about whether patients should be able to willingly take on risks associated with experimental treatments. This new case offers a sobering reminder of what can happen when patients travel abroad looking for a miracle cure.

The woman suffered from lupus nephritis, a disease in which the immune system attacks the kidneys. When medications no longer controlled her disease, she went to a still-unnamed clinic in Bangkok where doctors said they could treat her disease using stem cells drawn from her own bone marrow. There was some medical rationale for this:

Bona-fide trials in European clinics about six years ago showed that some people with similar kidney disease benefited if stem cells from their own bone marrow were injected into their blood. The body’s immune system was first deliberately destroyed with powerful immunosuppressive drugs, then the reinjected stem cells helped to stop the attacks on the kidney by rebuilding and rebalancing the immune system. [New Scientist]

However, the Thai clinic didn’t inject the stem cells into the patient’s blood stream, instead they injected them directly into her kidneys. That means the stem cells did nothing to stop the immune system’s attack on the organs–and they instead produced never-before-seen side effects.

According to a paper about the case just published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the woman went into a decline soon after her treatment. Within three months she required dialysis, within a year one kidney had failed, and within two years she was dead. A team of Thai and Canadian researchers performed a postmortem analysis of the kidneys, and found no evidence at all that the treatment had benefited the woman–and they found strange lumps and legions at the sites of injection. Further investigation revealed that the masses were tangled mixtures of blood vessels and bone marrow cells.

Dr Duangpen Thirabanjasak, from Chulalongkorn University, who led the research, said: “This type of lesion has never been described before in patients, and we believe that this is either formed directly by the stem cells that were injected or that the stem cells caused these masses to form.” [BBC]

Susan Quaggin, who wrote a commentary about the case for the same nephrology journal, says this tragic incident doesn’t cast a pall on reputable medical research on stem cell therapies, as animal trials and safety studies are built in to the system to protect patients.

But she says that the Thai results are yet another reminder that sick people should not gamble with their safety, and money, by turning to stem-cell tourism peddled by unscrupulous operators. “The sad part is that many people are desperate, and what makes it even worse is that it costs lots of money,” says Quaggin [New Scientist].

I always find the 'production line' feeling rather reassuring when being admitted or visiting a hospital actually. I want clinical precision and no emotion.

Getting processed through efficiently and without drama is WAY better than having them standing around scratching their heads trying to figure out what is wrong and which dept they should send you to imho.

I don't want the feeling that I am like a guest star on House M.D. or something. If I have to go to a hospital I want to have boring conditions that they have seen before and are easily diagnosed and treated.
