    Money...like a dripping tap.

You really could go crazy here, in fact I think I already have!

The wifes family, are always saying how hard up they are, I feel sorry for the old man and old lady, they are not lazy people by any stretch of the imagination, but they are inherently STUPID.

They are their own worst enemies when it comes to money, and how to waste it.

A few examples, the mother is a hoarder, she hoards everything, papers, bills, any old rubbish.

This innevitably leads to them being unable to find or remember to pay bills, so all the penny pinching and saving is usually blown when they cabn't find the phone bill and it gets cut off...there goes another 100 Baht to get it reconnected, and this is not a one off, it is as regular as clockwork.

Then we have a couple of instances of major stupidity today.

My wifes mother has about 10 rai of rice paddy, every year, she would pay for rice seedlings, and fertilizer, a few thousand Baht.

She then gave the land to some local raggers, who would do the work of rice planting and the rest, in exchange for half of the crop.

She was getting ripped off, they were taking about 75%, and overcharging and underworking! So, my wife decides it's time to do it alone.

The first crop was better than expected, so now she realises how much they were being ripped off, and the people who were ripping her off now realise how much cash they have lost from their little scam.

Anyway, she hired one of these bastards with a tractor to turn the soil for this batch of rice, they promised "faithfully" (not a Thai word) The seedlings were supposed to be planted today, lo and behold, the tractor hasn't turned up...again!

They want to use the land for free!

Anyway, it seems like the guy has ploughed about a half rai and done a bunk.

So instead of sorting it out...CONFRONTATION! she goes and gets another tractor to do the job. So you can picture what is going to happen now...the first bastard is going to come looking for his money once he sees the new tractor, there will be the usual disputes, arguments over how much work he did etc...

I advised her to simply tell him, if he doesn't finish the job then go get fucked, and not one Baht...but no...there must be no CONFRONTATION.

So I can see them ending up paying twice for this.

The second case of stupidity - The old woman left two of those old woven baskets here for the past 3 months, then, suddenely, just as it's getting dark, she telephones wanting the baskets, like a matter of life and death.

Waste of money No.1 The phone call!
Waste of money number 2 - The wife gets the baskets and takes them on the motorbike to the mothers...a 5 minute ride.
Waste of money No.3 The Nephew arrives on his motorbike, looking for the baskets that have already gone..how they never passed each other on the road amazes me.
I tell the nephew, the baskets have already gone, so he pisses off.
Not one minute later, he must have parked on the road outside my place, and then he telephones not once, but twice, to confirm with my "SON" (who is 8) that the baskets have gone....

    Is it me?

The average wage here is about 180-200 baht a day....drip drip drip!

Think yourself lucky you don't live near tesco or big c, the number of times we have to buy stuff just because it's buy one get one free is amazingly wasteful I think At the momnet we have 14 sacks of bloody washing powder all over the place cos it was BOGOF and the mrs wants to get some more. Good job we aint got a dog as dog food was on offer today, saw her looking though, but just had to buy BOGOF bog roll, good day!

    The shame......................

I do that all the time. When Macro or the like are doing specials I buy the fokin lot.

I've got washing powder to last a year. Tinned fish to last 2 and oils and sauces to last a life time.

    How embarrassing.

Saved a shed load of money though.

I don't understand why it's wasteful. If they're running a loss leader ( is that what they call it?) I'll buy the lot if there's no sell by date.

Instead of growing rice couldn't she just buy it from Big C like everyone else? then she wouldn't need to get involved with these people.

May turn out to be a master stroke and when the shit hits the fan here.

Not what most people think about but to store up on some essentials is not a bad idea me thinks.

    Teddy,
it is in fact the only thing that actually really seems to make a bit of cash for them, it provides enough rice to feed the entire family for a year from one crop, and pays for itself.

The problems are, that for years the old woman has been getting ripped off something rotten.

Now she wants her eldest grandson to have a go and try and do something worthwhile, and maybe make a bit of cash. These spiteful bastards are doing all they can to prevent her growing the rice.

They see it as some god given right to use her land for next to nothing and shit her with the rice.

Previously, when they looked after it, she ended up with about 35 sacks of rice, not enough to feed the family - That was her and her husband, her two sons and their families, and her daughters kids too, all in all about 10 people in the loop!

This crop, I put in 5K Baht, She has enough rice to feed her family, I got 600KG or more and she was still able to sell 17K Baht worth of rice for cash!

And previously, she only got this once a year, now, they can do it two or three times.....and to be honest, if you just get a whiff of really fresh Homilly Rice, when it is almost still soft, cooking, there isn't any rice from Tesco or Big C that can compare.

I am not a big rice fan, but this has to be smelled to be believed!

I hear you missis and relate. In comparison I feel lucky that I have a brother in law who is genuinely, sincerely sound as a pound, as is his wife, my sister in law. they farm all our land and we share it all up equally, amicably and I do sod all...aside from the math. 3 years now, first year went red second better and this there's a profit!....not much but pays the kids school fees in town, and we all gin kao free. I did buy a hand push motor plough up-front for 90k so a complete return is a way off, but the over-all picture ain't bad.

Sounds like you've absolutely no one to rely on there missis. don't know what to suggest. could say have a spliff or three but the problem always returns...

They aren't a bad bunch, except for one or two rotten apples, on the whole, they seem to just want a chance to get something fair for a fair days work.

I never realised how badly even the locals will try to rip each other off!

It makes it ten times worse for my missus when they know she has a "RICH" Farang husband...I must remember to plant some more money trees this year, as we are getting a bit strapped.

You are lucky that your wife did not want a dog because the dog food is on discount.

Here's a suggestion. To avoid confrontation; when tractor driver #1 comes looking for his payday have wifey meet him on the porch with a 12 gauge shotgun in her arms. Sorted.

The wife’s family isn’t too bad. It’s a large family that looks after each other. Most of the younger ones have government jobs or their own businesses with the elder brothers/sisters farming. Land owned by the younger ones is farmed by family and the profits shared 50/50.

I couple of years ago I noticed one of the older sisters weren’t living as well as she could have. It turned out she had put a large chunk of her land into hock with a money lender to get money to send her 2 daughters to uni. The money lender got use of the land and all the rice went to replay the loan.

I overheard a conversation one day and realized the outstanding debt was only 20,000. She’d been paying the loan off for nearly 10 years.

Through the wife we lent that money interest free to the sister on condition she clear the loan and repay the wife when she could. In less than a year we had our money back and her sister’s life has improved greatly.

As logic would dictate...as I too would like to greet him.

Sadly, i know from past experience, there will be loads of smiles, waiing, Ka, Ka Ka...and the money will be handed over!

They are EX SLAVES, they have been a race of slaves for hundreds of years, it takes them a bit of time to adjust to their new found FEUDAL FREEDOM!

Believe me, nothing would give me greater pleasure than see the wife stick the 12 gauge up his nose ans simply tell him to "Go Fuck Yourself" ... it won't happen, they bend like trees in the wind when the slightest authority, or supposed "supperiority" blows their way...it makes me sick!

Get both tractor drivers round the house at the same time.
Put the money on the table and tell them to divide it up themselves

tsicar what happened to your new, and oh so attractive avatar?, somebody object to it's stunning beauty I expect. Some on here just cannot appreciate true loveliness can they, even when they have spread the same images all over the internet themselves, never mind the truck was probably better looking anyways!!
