Thought I Got Away With It!

Had to visit the immigration today, late for my 90 days penance. Due 6th October.
I was sure I was going to get stiffed for 2K, so I put on a brave if sickly face.
Normally, in chian mai, you get all the paperwork together, get to the window, and they usually have a couple of young girls that appear to be trainees, that give your paperwork the one over before taking it to GOD to sign.

I went there today, and the whole place has been walled up, what was once outside is now inside with air-con and a ticket number system.

I get the ticket and wait almost a "whole 5 minutes" yes it was that quick.

When I get to the counter, there are no friendly helpful girls, ready to tell me I am late, only a fat brown toad of a police captain.

I was wondering if I should apologise as i handed in the paperwork to see if it would get me some brownie points, but his manner made me think again.

Then I couldn't beleive my luck, he ripped out the old 90 day receipt without even looking at it, as if he was going to just bin it!
Again, normally they tell you to fuck off and wait somewhere else while GOD signs it, but this didn't happen, he was filling in the new form on his own and had even signed "pol capt" on the bottom, as he reached forward to pass me back my passport, I was almost about to cum, THEN the twat noticed something....yes, I was fucked, he saw the 6 October!

That was it, LATE 2000 Baht, then he made me go and get another set of photocopies of everything, that is probably his sense of humour.

    So close!

What I was curious to find out, is the 2000 baht a one off? like if I am 1 day late, is it 2000, what if I am 365 days late...is it still 2000?

The way I see it, it is probably as cheap to just forget about it and pay the 2K once a year when you go for the visa.

It costs me about 300 baht a trip in diesel, 4 trips per year is about 1200 baht.

Photocopies are cheap, but the fuck around factor etc, has to be worth a bob or two -

Time, I reckon it takes me at least three hours per visit, so there is another 12 hours I could be doing something else.

none of this takes into account unnecesary wear and tear on the car, oil, tyres etc.

It would to be honest seem just as economical to not bother going until you need to renew your visa.

If for instance you were late a day or so each time, it's going to cost you 8000 baht, why fuck around, just be late 365 days instead of 1.

Don't they start stamping your passport if you're late? Creating problems down the track.

I was under the impression (i dont do my own reporting btw, HR takes care of it) that you could report 7 days either side of the actual report date, if you exceeded the 7 days (late) it was classed as an overstay [at] 500b per day.

Fuck im glad i dont have to deal with this shit.

I thought that too - that was what I heard on the TV site, but I never asked for a receipt, he didn't offer so that was the end of story - indeed that is the only worry, if they start stamping shit in the passport - if not, fuck em, I'll go once a year and pay the extra 2K!

If they do stamp shit I guess it's time to "lose" the passport and get a fresh one. Should work once or twice if you're lucky.

No, it has nothing to do with overstay, it seems to be a police thing rather than an immigration thing.

The 500 baht a day crap comes in when you are late reporting for your visa, or the extension of stay, and that does carry a stamp in the passport.

When you get a new passport though, that doesn't get transferred, only your previous details on the visa - so ot looks like a clean slate.

I know, it's my own fault, should have kept an eye on it.

When I first stayed long term back in 2003, I knew nothing about the 90 day reports, and never made one in two years. It was only on renewing my extension that the "kind" police captain pointed this out.

We went to the police station next door and (my Thai is not that good) but I got the impression that they wanted 2K from me, which my wife confirmed later.

Apparently she told the guy on the desk (he wasn't a cop - just a trainee) that I was extremely Jai Rohn and would likely blow a fuse - none of which I understood fully at the time, but they decided to charge me only 1000...should have taken her with me today.

At the end of the day it is only a few quid, it is a pain in the arse, but I won't complain too much, they could change things and end up revoking your right to stay, so I guess 2000 is not really worth moaning about!

    Here's an outlandish idea.

Get a diary so you don't forget.

    From the Immigration website

If a foreigner staying in the kingdom over 90 days without notifying the Immigration Bureau or notifying the Immigration Bureau later than the set period, a fine of 2,000.- Baht will be collected. If a foreigner who did not make the notification of staying over 90 days is arrested, he will be fined 4,000.- Baht.

Brilliant Idea, I must admit - sadly, the last time I ever kept a diary was when i was encouraged to do so by mother when I was about 10 -never used one, never used a watch... I have mobile phone with a calendar and reminders, I have a computer that can do so much more, I have about 6 fucking claendars with "you know who" on, around the house... I mark dates, I make reminders, but I would simply forget to check the diary! - there really is no difference in checking the diary everday to checking your passport everyday - if you don't write anything in it!
my best intentions usually go to ratshit in the last week or two anyway....I think my fragile eggshell mind is simply overcrowded!

    I know, no excuse!

They use "Foreigner " now - I much preferred "ALIEN" it gave my kid something to talk about at school ..."ET is at home"
