    Rainbow around the sun.

Has anyone witnessed this phenomenom? Has anyone got any photo's of it. Can anyone explain it?
Despite my best googling efforts, i cannot find any decent explanation. I can find some good photos, but i think they may be doctored. The reason i ask is because i saw this phenomenom on the 15th of this month, and took some photos of it. I have a bog standard point and shoot camera, and whilst i was pointing and shooting, i could see nothing but very bright sunlight. I have now downloaded them, and the results are way better than i expected, in so far as i can see quite clearly the rainbow/halo around the sun. The photos were taken around 1 pm, and within 30 minutes the "mirage" had gone. At one point, there was a semi double halo, which i didnt photograph. I also took video, but it didn't turn out.

Here is a photo of what i mean.

Saw one in Sri Lanka & one here in UK last winter. Apparently it's to do with ice crystals in the atmosphere splitting light into a spectrum.

Here you go, it sounds like you are talking about a 22º halo:

I've only seen one once, it was quite lovely.

So. We have the sun shining through ice crystals just north of the equator at mid-day, into my eyeballs. Presumably the ice/ water is so low in the sky that the refraction of sunlight is only visible to my own eyes?
I'm really not trying to be a smart arse, i hold up all my hands and say i do not know. But i aint read nor heard anything other than it was THE eyeball in the sky.

Saw it on Samui in 2001-02? Friends called and told me to go outside. Holy sh*t! It seemed to cover the whole sky. Fantastic!

22º halos don't do that. Maybe a 46º one might look like that?

    ice crystals??

I was there and saw it too. Checked on the internet and found the same ice crystal explanation. Will not believe that any ice was in the air.

Only 14 more posts and I'll get in touch Chumphon man.

hehehe Have no idea. All I know is it looked like a UFO landing and seemed quite close. Covered the whole sky area that I could see.
